Sue s e-news N O V E M B E R Community Centre Councillor Sue McFadden Mississauga WARD 10 Construction of Mississauga s newest community centre along Ninth Line in Ward 10 is moving along well and on schedule. The base of the six-lane, 25-metre pool and therapeutic tank is completed and being waterproofed ahead of the winter freeze. Sub-surface work is ongoing, including site servicing for the storm and sanitary sewer system. It s so exciting to see the progress that s been made over the summer. Soon, the floor of the centre will be poured and beams will be visible sticking up out of the ground! To follow along, please visit the City s web page dedicated to this project: LINK Construction traffic along Ninth Line will increase over the next few weeks as trucks will be bringing fill to the site. At least one lane in each direction is expected to remain open but there may be lane adjustments involving the centre turn lane from time to time. Expect delays when traveling along Ninth Line; please avoid the area if you have that option. 2 Vote 2018 Thank you for re-electing me as your City and Regional Councillor in Ward 10! Together with my office staff, David and Joanne, I look forward to serving our community for another four years. The official results are in for our municipal election and I am honoured and humbled with the outpouring of support I received during the campaign and certainly at the ballot box. While voter turn-out was lower than hoped for, Ward 10 residents came out in good numbers higher than the average again for this election and you gave me the most votes of any councillor in the city: 10,438! There were some definite problems with how the election process unfolded, especially toward the end of the night when technology failed, election officials were scrambling to process voters, and line-ups got longer and longer. I ll be closely scrutinizing the staff report that addresses the operations of this election when it is presented in the coming months. Democracy is hindered when people are frustrated to the point of waiting for hours to vote or deciding not to THREE S COMPANY vote at all. If that was you, on behalf of the city, I am sorry; we must do better. City Council has two new faces (Wards 1 and 7) among its 12 members. Here are the results: Mayor Bonnie Crombie Ward 1 Councillor Stephen Dasko Ward 2 Councillor Karen Ras Ward 3 Councillor Chris Fonseca Ward 4 Councillor John Kovac Ward 5 Councillor Carolyn Parrish Ward 6 Councillor Ron Starr Ward 7 Councillor Dipika Damerla Ward 8 Councillor Matt Mahoney Ward 9 Councillor Pat Saito Ward 10 Councillor Sue McFadden Ward 11 Councillor George Carlson Ward 10 will also be represented by trustees from our public and separate school boards. Congratulations to Nokha Dakroub, re-elected trustee for the Peel District School Board, and Brea Corbet, who succeeds Esther O Toole as trustee for the Dufferin- Peel Catholic District School Board. I m looking forward to our inauguration on December 3, the start of the new term of Council.

Pedestrian Crossover Doug Leavens Boulevard in Ward 10 is one of only five streets in the City of Mississauga that is piloting a new pedestrian crossover aimed at improving safety for those who cross busy residential roads on their walk, skate or bike ride. The crossover became operational in October, and connects the Lisgar Meadowbrook Trail at Doug Leavens. This is a new piece of traffic infrastructure for our city and will take some getting used to by both pedestrians and motorists. Pedestrians must push the button indicating they want to cross. The lights will activate and motorists are required to stop and yield to the pedestrians who have the right of way. Once the pedestrians have made it completely to the other side, motorists may proceed. Please note, pedestrians: for your own safety, even if you have the right of way, you need to pay attention and make sure the vehicles will stop for you! A SAFER CROSSING Because of the width of the roadway along Doug Leavens Blvd., some motorists have been passing cars on the right, in the non-travel portion of the road, causing unsafe conditions for pedestrians who may be crossing. As a result, we have made some changes to the painted lines on the road in this area. If you travel along Doug Leavens regularly, please pay careful attention to the new crossover and the new lanes for the safety of all.

On-Street Parking Temperatures are falling. Winter is coming. And one thing we can be sure of is that snow is on its way. When snow plows are needed to clear the snow from our streets, it s imperative that vehicles are not parked on the road. On some of the narrower streets in Ward 10, if vehicles are parked on both sides, the plows are forced to turn around as they cannot get down the road. The City of Mississauga has an onstreet parking prohibition from 2 am to 6 am yearround. But regardless of the time of day, vehicles must be removed from the street during and immediately following any snow storm so the plows can get through, even if they had a parking consideration. Vehicles parked on the street are subject to tickets and towing (and the subsequent storage fees). This winter, owners can expect to have their vehicle towed if they do not comply. The easy way to avoid all of this is to simply not park on the street. ACTIVE LIVING Residents are enjoying the new fitness stations that were added to the park at Lisgar Fields this fall. The additional equipment promotes exercise and healthy activity for people of all ages and abilities. Funding for the project came through community investment so that no tax dollars were used. This amenity has already been a popular addition to this community park. I hope many residents will get a chance to try it out and perhaps make it a part of your fitness routine. Budget Deliberations for 2019 City and Regional Council discussions around the 2019 Budget will take place a little later than usual this year due to the municipal election. In Mississauga, Budget Committee meetings will start in earnest during the week of January 14. LINK to Schedule: The public is encouraged to provide feedback into the budget process and a simple way to do that is through the Budget Allocator tool. What programs and services would you invest the taxes and user fees collected by the city? LINK to Tool:

Regulating Cannabis I m grateful for the hundreds of s I received from the community in response to my questionnaire about cannabis that I sent out last week. I asked for your feedback on regulations around the smoking of cannabis in public places. The feedback has been overwhelmingly clear 94% were in favour of restricting cannabis consumption beyond what is currently allowed and 91% wanted it regulated similar to alcohol. I have submitted a motion to Region of Peel Council recommending that a bylaw be enacted to restrict the smoking of cannabis to private property only. My last question in the survey asked whether Mississauga should allow licensed cannabis retail stores to operate within its limits. Of the 337 responses received, two-thirds were not in favour of our city allowing bricks and mortar stores to open. City Council will discuss this issue in one of its first meetings in SMOKING IN PUBLIC the new term as we consider whether to go ahead or opt out of allowing retail stores. If we opt out now, we can always allow them later after further careful consideration, but if we don t opt out by the province s January 22 deadline, we will be obliged to allow them as early as April I m grateful for the thoughtful comments of so many who took the time to respond. Remembrance Day There are a number of City-hosted Remembrance Day ceremonies taking place in Mississauga again this year. With November 11 falling on a Sunday this year, you could even attend more than one. Civic Centre Community Memorial on Celebration Square (300 City Centre Drive) is holding its ceremony on Friday, Nov. 9 at 10:45 a.m. The Streetsville ceremony is Sunday, Nov. 11 with the parade to the cenotaph starting at 10:30 a.m. LINK

3 Home Teams in Mississauga In addition to the Steelheads (hockey) and Raptors 905 (basketball), our City welcomes the Mississauga MetroStars to town, a brand new entry into the Major Arena Soccer League. All three teams will share the Paramount Fine Foods Centre (formerly Hershey) as their home arena. The MetroStars are the first Canadian team to participate in the 16-team North American professional MASL and will open its season on the road in Baltimore against The Blast on December 1. Their first home game is the following Saturday, December 8 at 3 pm against the Florida Tropics. Described as rocket in a bottle, the game of arena soccer is fast-paced and exciting to watch. Famous Canadian international outdoor soccer player Dwayne De Rosario is on the MetroStars roster. LINK: GET INTO THE GAME Raptors 905 launch their new season this weekend at home against Delaware on Saturday, Nov. 3 at 2 pm. The Raptors are coming off another strong season that saw them make it to the G-League Finals, dropping the best of three to the Austin Spurs. The Raptors won the championship a year prior. LINK: The Mississauga Steelheads have cooled recently after a hot start that saw them a top the Ontario Hockey League standings and ranked 8th overall among Junior teams in Canada.
