The Adventure Continues If you have left SSAGO, but you want to keep meeting up with your other ex-ssago mates, why not join SAGGA? SAGGA gives you a framework in which to continue your Scouting and Guiding, but what you do within that framework is up to you. If you want to go abroad to an international Jamboree, then that is fine, if you just want to meet up with your mates around a campfire, then that is fine too. If you can t give the time to be a leader, then it is a way of giving back to the Scout and Guide community without the commitment. But it is not all about service. SAGGA gives plenty of social opportunities. Although SAGGA has a few traditions and regular activities, we are continually developing and changing. You are not tied to the existing events, you can make up your own. They can be service and/ or social events. Groups within SAGGA are loosely geographically based, but they don t have to be. The newest group, the Nomads, covers the country. You can join any group you like, or join a number of groups if you wish. Remember that you are free to create your own group. As you get older, you might find that you have time to be a leader. SAGGA runs leader support weekends which give you the opportunity to discuss your problems and share ideas with other Scout and Guide leaders from across the country. You will be amazed at the ideas you can pick up. SAGGA is a national SASU, although you don t have to become a SASU member. We are working on a Guiding equivalent. To join simply visit Join, fill in the form and the Registrar will be in touch. KUDU 1 SSAGO Reunion 2017
1967 and All That (or the bits we can remember of the combined History of SAGGA and SSAGO) SAGGA - The Scout and Guide Graduate Association was founded in 1957, which seems a bit chicken and egg, since surely the Student should come before the Graduate? However, there were forerunners to SSAGO (yes, more than one) representing students in the UK. If you get a chance this weekend, have a good look through some of the archive material provided by SAGGA member Ann Day. They tell a tale of two organisations - Inter Varsity and Inter-Collegiate scout and guide clubs - and a history of ne er the twain shall meet In the late 1950s there were two types of Higher Education establishments: - the Universities (represented by Oxbridge and the Redbricks) and Training Colleges. One issued Degrees, the other Diplomas. SAGGA had never made the distinction, but I-V looked down on I-C and resisted a merger. In what Ann has described as a rather snooty letter from 1958, the Inter-Varsity Rally Chair rebuffs suggestions of amalgamation The I-C students were told they couldn t attend the I-V rally (which were week long then, but a group of I-C students, supported by SAGGA, insisted that natural justice should mean they be allowed to attend the conference when I-V debated the matter. Apparently it involved enough canny I- C students rigging the discussion groups (by thorough preparation!) and the I-C chair taking the resistant I-V chair for a romantic tryst during a key vote. The rest they say is History (This article has been thoroughly researched and all sources can be verified. I think.) KUDU 2 SSAGO Reunion 2017
Alternative Rally After many years in the wilderness, the Alternative Rally is returning. This year Alternative Rally will be 13-15th October at Alfrey Activity Centre Broadwater (Warwickshire CV7 7HR) and it will cost 30. For those who aren t driving we can do station pick ups from Birmingham International on request. The event won t follow the exact format of a Rally and as such we aren t asking you to book onto an activity on Saturday afternoon, however we will have lots of ideas for things to do in the area with signup sheets available so that people can see who wants to go do the same thing. There will be some entertainment on the Saturday evening but until we have a better idea of numbers we ll be keeping that a secret. In terms of food, just like rally, all of your food for the weekend is provided. However, we hope to provide a higher quality of food now that we re no longer students and can afford the slightly finer things in life! This means there will be food from Friday evening to Sunday lunchtime. Unlike Rally we will have no staff so everyone will be expected to pitch in and help, again there will be signup sheets available. Many hands make light work so you won t find yourself bogged down with lots of jobs - don t let it put you off! Hopefully this sounds like your sort of event and you ll continue to the booking page at rally.sagga.org.uk. Any Questions please do - mattjkillen@gmail.com. KUDU 3 SSAGO Reunion 2017

Rally memoirs (but what happens at Rally. stays at Rally ) Here is a collection of memoirs from numerous contributors covering SSAGO rallies over the years. Mascot stealing - Leeds had a potato and it was eaten at the Oxford Rally in Spring 1991! By that time it had a little outfit, studs and was approximately 7 months old! On the same topic, someone (no names) recalls taking a Land Rover apart to get Webster the BUGS mascot off the steering wheel. Autumn 2003: Much ado about bugger all was Andrew Bolton's only rally. He toured Coventry in a minibus buying up every donut in the city Cambridge pub bicycle tour Summer bit wobbly by the end. Sleeping on tables in huts was quite common! - Trev Ward spending 5 minutes talking to Rachel s feet after she rolled off the tables being used as bunk beds. The famous Minibus rolling of Spring 1992: unfortunately this was not at all like Gloucestershire cheese rolling, and the insurance arguments discussions rolled on for years afterwards. Kath went to this Rally (in Bath) with right leg in ankle to hip cast and the pub crawl was a pub stay due to lack of mobility (and her leg didn t fit into the loos ) Not having the foggiest where you were: In the days before and internet mapping, probably only those in the front of the minibus had the directions and it was probably dark when you arrived, so had no idea of where you were! This is why our rally memories are so hazy! Some of us had long drives to Rallies before the M40 was opened... KUDU 10 SSAGO Reunion 2017
Tom Martin managed 19 rallies between 2000 and 2007 (others managed many, many more), but his favourite memories are: Autumn First rally, country in chaos (post fuel strike, no trains and widespread flooding) but 100ish people got to Durham. Rally had been given some handheld flares (not distress ones) which were being marched around the campfire (what would go wrong). Autumn Rally in a school (I think the last indoor one), with a bonfire in the playground! The late returners from the campfire made a big hole in the Sunday morning breakfast. 100% increase on attendance from previous year. Autumn Recognising the achievement of Ranygazoo (they were going to retire) and having the pleasure of presenting them with the first lifetime membership of SSAGO. Summer The best silly games ever with a monopoly game around Oxford with official looking cards and proper challenges. Autumn Then a student in Carlisle drove to Southampton in a 900cc car and arrived on site after driving 300+ miles without a hitch to reverse straight into a hedge and small ditch. Won the James Bond themed fancy dress competition as a dead body in a sheet sleeping bag. Spring (Had moved since the previous rally and had a 900 mile round trip) First rally in Scotland since Snowed for a couple of days before the rally. Silly games on Saturday morning desended into a mass snowball fight and then building things out of snow such as a TV (including separate remote control), sofa and dog. Local band hadn t been warned about SSAGO barn dances! Organisers had organised kilt hire! KUDU 11 SSAGO Reunion 2017
Summer Last rally and in my adopted hometown. Showed SSAGO in the best possible light. Silly games nearly involved the air ambulance coming out (a queue was forming to accompany the casualty). Finally, someone proposed marriage during any other business at the AGM Oxford 1991, which was seconded by the then Secretary s sister. The minutes of the meeting got a bit sketchy after that point as the Secretary realised she would be getting Jonathan Payne as a brother-in-law. The happy couple have recently celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary and have two children in SSAGO. Meet SAG and GA! Carrying on the tradition of SSAGO mascots and in light of our new positive relationship with them, SAGGA now has its very own pair of mascots. So meet SAG and GA. On our travels in Belgium over the summer, the local supermarket were running a sticker scheme. We spent enough money to redeem two of the stuffed vegetable toys. There was much discussion on who we should get. We went with SAGGA colours: green -SAG the broccoli, and yellow - GA the banana). Since their return to England they have supported us at Wellies and Wristbands and Gilwell Reunion. They even have their own neckers. Look out for them at future events! KUDU 12 SSAGO Reunion 2017
