It is well worth checking whether an airline offers a graduate scheme. A simple search on Google, typing the name of the airline followed by graduate programme is the best starting point. 6 APPLICATION PROCESS - GENERAL INFORMATION The airline and airport industry can be tough and getting into the industry can be a lengthy process. Therefore, it is important to start early in your search for employment. Airside passes: Airside passes for any positions which require you to go airside at the airport (past security), you will be required to have an airside pass. For this, you will need to provide a five year checkable reference history. It is advised to have this information ready as early as possible, so that if you are offered employment, you can provide the information to the prospective employer. You will need to account for all gaps in employment or education with personal references, it is sensible to have both academic and professional references (these would come from a non-family member who has known you for at least two years). References are usually what cause delays with airside passes and so to speed things up, get this information gathered as early as possible. Tests/Training: many positions at the airport will require you to undergo some tests/ training. Even if you have been offered employment, it is usually subject to passing your training, which can last as long as three weeks. Therefore, do not assume that your employment is official until you have completed the training period successfully.

7 SOCIAL MEDIA - TWITTER Don t forget to look for companies to follow particularly those you would like to work for and to use the # to get the latest jobs and news about the sector. Most airlines and airports have their own Twitter feeds you can follow. SOCIAL MEDIA - LINKEDIN For many students, one of the keys to finding the right job is all about who you know. Therefore it is vital that you start developing your industry contacts and networks. The social media platform, LinkedIn, can help you maintain and develop a useful network of friends and industry specific professionals to support you with your job search. It also allows you to follow companies and connect with alumni from your school and university who already work in your industry. JOB SEEKER EVENTS Attending careers and employment fairs can also be a great opportunity to network with professionals from organisations that operate within the UK or abroad. Each year the university organises a part-time jobs fair, a graduate employment fair and a placement opportunities fair at which you can find out about the latest vacancies in your area and network with employers.
