He was suffering from numerous infections and was in Queens Hospital and sadly succumbed. His funeral will be on 24 th 11:20 at the Upminster Crematorium. Alan was one of the original IPMS Hornchurch members and has contributed significantly to the club by writing many articles for the club newsletter. He started his Wrighty s References series in November 1998 with a look at Fleet Air Arm Squadrons and continued with Stuka Groups, Luftwaffe Ground Attack Units, Luftwaffe bases in the final year of the war and RAF Squadron Codes. More recently he has concentrated on more topical modern subjects under the auspices of Wryspy. His presence will be greatly missed. RIP His last article/feature, presented this month, is a very personal one for him and with deep regret didn t quite get completed before Alan passed away, he was quite concerned towards the end that he hadn t finished it.

Annual General Meeting Tonight Tonight s meeting is the AGM and as such we need to decide on who will actually run the club, look after the money and run our internal club competition or any other tasks the club thinks need doing. In addition, we also need to think about what we will actually do for our monthly meetings and this is your opportunity to raise suggestions or put forward ideas which you think need discussion. Southern Expo I would like to ask that some club members be available on Friday evening from 7:00pm onwards to help setup, more importantly as many as possible attend the show and help populate the stand with models (they don t have to be to the club theme of Animals ) and just in case the message hasn t sunk in yet, all club members are eligible to put models on display, and then man the stand throughout the show, you are the best recruiting tool for the club I can think of. Help breaking down the tables on the Sunday evening will also be most appreciated. Will someone please volunteer to be the display organiser? New show announced IPMS Chiltern IPMS(UK) Branch Submission & Address List Just because it s a good time to do this, before I complete the branch return please check the current address list I have to ensure you are on there and the details are accurate & complete. I will also need to know whether you are IPMS or not and your IPMS number if you can remember it. Airfix Instructions Some enterprising person has posted quite a few instructions online from old Airfix kits.

Forthcoming Shows in 2017 Shows with highlight have been booked for us to attend. If you wish to attend any of the shows with the club stand please let me know so I can attempt to book space for the club. 4 Robin s Ruminations It was with great sadness that I read Peter s recent informing the club members of Alan Wright s sad passing. Alan must have joined the club before I did, which must I guess make him one of the founding members as I can t remember him not being part of the club. As well as modelling, Alan also had a passion for speedway, football, (premiership and nonleague), painting and scratch building either complete models or the parts to enhance his model kits. How he managed to somehow balance all of these interests beats me, I can hardly find the time to get into my modelling room nowadays. Unfortunately his Wife s ill health in recent years meant that Alan could not always attend as many meetings as he had done and lately he had looked unwell when he could attend the club evenings, but he was still a prolific contributor to Sticky Fingers to the end. I ll finish off this part of my article by simply saying that Alan was a kind man with a great enthusiasm for all his varied interests, always ready for a chat and a good friend of Hornchurch Model Club. Rest in peace Alan. Somehow the rest of my article seems almost banal after my lead piece, however life goes on and some things must be done as it affects others. Southern Expo is proceeding more or less to plan with the normal late changes due to drop outs and enquiries for extra space. Peter is now in full flow, juggling all the trade and club stands to somehow accommodate all their conflicting requirements and produce floor plans what seems every day, and as the show gets closer, every ten minutes. After sorting that lot out Peter will take it easy sorting simpler things out, like the meaning of life and the Middle East crisis in his tea break! I ve got the easy job of twisting the arms of the traders that are a tad slow in parting with their pennies, all in a very tactful way of course. The trophies and other awards are on order and the next job I have to do is sort out the competition paperwork and award markers. The model engineering show at Alexandra Palace started for me the day before it was open to the public with my normal checking and setting up of the stand for an early start the next day and this year finding out how the new parking and unloading restrictions were going to work. Thankfully the new ideas by the organisers didn t cause too many problems and was a lot easier in practice than the way the instructions were written. I had to smile after all the warnings about tight security and checking passes, I wandered up the stairs in my waterproof Post Office coat carrying my model boxes and on entering the hall I was greeted by Post Office, all deliveries to the organisers office, people see what they want to see I guess. On the Friday morning I set off from home in plenty of time but was only within a few miles from home when I realised something was very wrong as the traffic was terrible. It turned out that a lorry on fire had closed the M25 between the M11 and A12 junctions and the police were advising everybody to exit the motorway and go via the Redbridge roundabout, oops. I managed to get to the stand with ten minutes to spare before the public were allowed in the hall. After a quick unpacking of my model boxes and with the help of the club members the stand was soon complete and ready just before the doors opened. The day then passed in its normal way for all the members present with turns of manning the stand, chatting with the public and wandering around the show. As ever all the members seemed to pick up bits and pieces that we never knew we wanted let alone intended to purchase. I picked-up a couple of cutting mats, drill bits and some oddments of brass shim, tube and rod for a friend. The return trip was just as slow due to the M25 still not being fully reopened, however I had Kevin Curley as company as he lives close to me, I don t think he got home any quicker than the buses and trains but at least it was a fair bit warmer in the car on that frosty evening. I had to miss the Saturday due to family commitments but I was back keen and ready on the Sunday with Peter as my prisoner / passenger in the car. Thankfully the trip up was a lot quicker and easier than my previous visit and we obtained a pretty good parking spot in the North Service Yard, life was good. The day followed its normal pattern of sitting on the stand, chatting to the public, and wandering around looking and occasionally parting with my pennies, normally on something that I didn t know I wanted, let alone couldn t do without. I ended up with a reading lamp, well it was actually for my Wife as she was finding knitting and crocheting the darker coloured wools a bit difficult in these winter evenings. I picked-up a retractable Swann & Morton handle with 5 blades for 4 and a very handy WD40 magnetic / extending / flexy necked torch for a fiver to name just a couple of my acquisitions on the Sunday. The trip home was mercifully simple and we got home safe and sound with all the model boxes and odds and ends that we needed to put on a nice club display. Roll on next year s show!

My official hat is now on.. Tonight is the animal themed competition relating to the clubs Expo display, good luck to all those members entering. Also tonight is the clubs AGM, I won t harangue or appeal to the membership as I have in previous years for input or suggestions, I ll leave it to the night and simply see what happens. I m sorry if this appears to be indifferent or resigned but after so many years of trying to encourage some sort of response or action from the membership, I ll just see what happens tonight. Robin Roffey s Ravings London Model Engineering Exhibition Alexandra Palace 2016 Every year I promise myself I will not do all three days of this wonderful show, recidivist noun: recidivist; plural noun: recidivists a convicted criminal who reoffends, especially repeatedly The problem is that there s so much to see (and buy) as myself, Bob L, Paul Bird, Peter, Robin, Kevin and Ian will attest to (sorry If I ve missed anyone off). It s not a show to go and buy a kit, as you ll be hard pressed to find one, however you will find that little tool you never knew you needed till you came across it. Through scalpel blades through Airbrushes and compressors, 3D printers to Lathes, you want it, they got it. 55 clubs and Societies were there, from Clockmakers from Epping to The West London Meccano Society with the Woodland Trust and RSPB thrown in. The Clubs on Plastic Parade, put on a good show and (Not biased at all) ours seemed to attract the most comments with the Caspian sea monster (Bob Lawrence s Ekranoplan) top of the list of what s that

NOT The Hornby Flying Scotsman Bob s Ekranoplan (lots of comments on this) Allen A little light refreshment As a follow on to this the club received a cheque from the organisers for 65 as a thank you for attending. This is much appreciated and is not expected, and is not something I would like to rely on in our finance planning. Peter

IPMS Hornchurch AGM 2017 Agenda 1. Committee Reports i) Secretary s report Peter Bagshaw ii) Assistant & Competition Secretary s report Robin Bellamy iii) Treasurer s report Ralph Hebron 2. Election of Officers i) Secretary ii) Assistant & Competition Secretary iii) Treasurer 3. Club Finances How are we doing? Review of meeting costs.

4. Club Competitions a) Announcement of winners for 2016/2017 competitions i) Wally Arrowsmith Trophy (Aircraft) ii) IPMS Hornchurch Trophy (Miscellaneous) iii) Modeller of the Year 2016 as judged by IPMS South East Essex (Southend) i v) A new trophy is to be introduced, it s my idea The Bob Plumridge Trophy, to be awarded on the night, watch this space! v) Alan Wright Trophy for Naval subjects? 1 st Bob Smith Whippet 2 nd Bob Lawrence X-Craft Submarine 3 rd Kevin Curley Austin KZ b) Competition rules Same as last year? Theme-build suggestions Cold War theme for the Iron Curtain W.W.I theme for the end of the Centenary Something less obvious like the number 2 5. Formulation of outstanding monthly dates for Suggestion from Allen Roffey Ok so I ve built a couple of Spitfires, and have a few more in the pipeline, Using most of the best known kits Academy, Airfix, Eduard, ICM, Revell, Tamiya, and Hasegawa. So what s my favourite and why? I ve also worked my way through all the P-38 s available yet again, what s my favourite and why? There are two possible scenarios for the night. 1. Stand up and talk (went down well when we did it I think) 2. A non Contest Contest where a number of us bring up the same subject (type) from different makers and others judge and grade (for each person) their kits in order of preference, stating their reasons for the choice, Results and comments could go into the following Sticky fingers and we could all learn from it. 6. Any Other Business?

Club Competition Rules The competitions are split into 2, the Wally Arrowsmith Trophy for Aircraft subjects and the IPMS Hornchurch Trophy for Miscellaneous subjects. Each competition will be run over rounds determined at the AGM (normally 4). The schedule and any Themes for the competitions are decided at the AGM. All models must have been completed for that competition year. Each competition has been split into 2 categories. Category 1 Category 2 Aircraft 1/72 nd scale or less Greater than 1/72 nd scale Miscellaneous Military vehicles any scale Anything else, i.e. not an aircraft or military vehicle subject. Registration of models must be made before 20:15 to allow voting to start at this time. Members vote for the winning models in order of preference from 1 st to 5 th places in each category and competition. For each competition round a competitor may enter a maximum of 2 models per category, i.e. For the Wally Arrowsmith competition (Aircraft) 2 models in Category 1 and 2 models in Category 2 are the maximum allowed per round. Modellers may enter models in either or both competitions and categories, Aircraft and Miscellaneous. A model may only be entered into any competition once. Dioramas count as 1 model. Two models on one base, but not a diorama, count as 2 models. Modellers are not expected to vote for their own entries. The person with the highest overall number of points in each competition (Aircraft or Miscellaneous) after the last round will be the club champion. In the event of a tie on points the number of 1 st and 2 nd places etc. will be the deciding factor. All models entered into any of the rounds are eligible for entry into the Modeller of the Year competition. In the event of a dispute the Competition Secretary s decision is final. Scoring Every model entered in each competition scores 5 points. The following points will be awarded for the 1 st five places in each competition category. 1 st place 20 points 2 nd place 18 points 3 rd place 16 points 4 th place 14 points 5 th place 12 points i.e. a person entering 1 model who comes 3 rd will score 5 points for entry plus 16 points for 3 rd place, giving a total of 21 points. Modeller of the Year Competition Rules Judging for the competition will be performed by external judges with no association with any of the entered models. Any models which have been entered into the IPMS Hornchurch competition over the year are eligible for entry. First, second and third places are to be awarded with the following prizes. Winner (1 st place) 20 Runner up (2 nd place) 10 3 rd place 5 In the event of a dispute the judge s decision is final.
