Thinking caps on please for ideas for meeting subjects or people you know who may be able to give us a talk about something of interest or is there something modelling related you could demonstrate? Modelling evenings appear to be popular so they are good for filling in meetings where we can t think of anything else. It will also be the last competition round of the year for the Theme Build of the number 2 subjects, for which points will count towards the final positions of the club competitions.

Friday night setup will happen really quickly, blink and you miss it but partly that is due to the number of helpers, we will most likely need some volunteers to help out on Saturday and Sunday and

Planning is well under way but as ever we as the organisers and also the club will really need your help. Then on Sunday we will need more help breaking down the tables and moving them for collection, again the more the merrier. Chiltern Show 2018 We ve had an invite to the 2 nd Chiltern Show in Biggleswade. Are we interested? Sadly, it clashed last year with the resurrected show at the REME Museum in Chatham. IPMS Scale Modelworld Not the most inspiring photo, if only due to the subjects featured but at least we made the IPMS this time round. Airifx 2018 Releases Airfix announced their 2018 range the other day, these were the only new moulds or revised ones. I suspect there may be more added during the year. 4 Robin s Ruminations A bit late to wish you all a Happy New Year I guess, but I ll do it anyway gentleman. I trust that Santa managed to squeeze his way down your chimney with a bit of plastic or resin. More to the point, did you start on said goodies. I must admit that Santa didn t bring me anything modelling related, all say ahh! However, I got a couple of good books and a few other bits and pieces, all in all a not a bad sack to find next to the chimney. Other than that, our Christmas passed fairly quietly with good food, a nice rest from work and very little alcohol, well you can t have everything can you? Just before Christmas Adele and I sneaked off into Romford for a quick look around for any last minute odds and ends we may have forgotten. While in W.H. Smith s Adele saw a Mary Berry simple cakes recipe / cook book which had all the cakes we like in it, a bargain at only 6. After reading the book at home and looking at all the mouth-watering pictures Adele was fired up to get busy in the kitchen. However, we were lacking a few ingredients and a couple of bits of cake hardware, a visit to Tesco s soon remedied that problem while relieving me of about 68. I ve come to the conclusion that there s no such thing as a cheap book, although I must admit that testing the still warm apple strudel with thick cream mellowed my attitude somewhat. I m now hoping the next recipe on test from the book will be the scones and if my wonderful, darling Wife is reading this article, that s as subtle as my hints get! The Model Engineers Exhibition is only a few days away now, to those members that have not committed to attend, I urge you too. Although the show might not sound as if it could hold much interest for you perhaps, it never ceases to keep me interested looking at all the weird and wonderful tools and odds and ends some of the stands sell or display. I like to try and work out just what some of the tools could possibly be used for, other than perhaps in the Marquis de Sade s personal dungeon. I will be after a variety of scalpel blades as my darling Son borrowed most of mine and left them in Germany. Also a box of disposable vinyl gloves for spraying and doing the dirty jobs around the house. However I m sure that there will be something unexpected that will tweak my interest and end up emptying my wallet of a few pennies. I am also looking forward to seeing how far some of last year s engineering projects are coming along, after all, a twelve foot live steam loco and tender from blueprints doesn t go together as fast as a 48th Tamiya kit. Ask Peter if there are any day tickets still going spare. My official hat is now on.. Tonight is the Modeller of the Year competition, a night of high drama and excitement with big money prizes on offer, well maybe not quite that exciting. I m sure that the judges from South East Essex, Southend to you and me, will be on hand for an expert and impartial decision. My thanks to them for coming out on which will no doubt be a dark and miserable night, weather wise at least. Robin

. The Lockheed Model 10 Electra As part of the research for a talk I gave at The London Plastic Modelling Show on Photo Reconnaissance I came across the Lockheed Model 10 Electra a precursor to the

Since we lost Alan, Sticky Fingers has (understandably) been a bit light and while I don t see myself filling the gap on a regular basis there will be bits and pieces such as.. The Lockheed Model 10 Electra As part of the research for a talk I gave at The London Plastic Modelling Show on Photo Reconnaissance I came across the Lockheed Model 10 Electra a precursor to the Hudson, a nice little twin-engine commercial aircraft, which was first flown in 1934 and was a contemporary of the Dragon Rapide also introduced The reference was that one was owned By Sidney Cotton and of course another famous owner was Amelia Earhart. Sidney Cotton Sidney Cotton was an Australian business man living in England prior to the second world war and had contacts throughout Europe. He owned an Electra and flew it everywhere including Germany. As the War was at that time a dark dot on the horizon he had a lot of contacts in Germany including the military. At one time Cotton had a General in the plane who suggested they flew over some military sites, with Cotton apparently reluctant to do so, but was assured that it would be ok The General was proud of Germany s growing might and pointed out sites, which Cotton, with inbuilt cameras slyly photographed. Cotton kept his aircraft at Heston and went on to become, when war started (and given the rank of Wing Commander) the first head of the RAF Photo Reconnaissance which was based at Heston. 6 Amelia Earhart Someone else who flew an Electra and someone I m sure we ve all heard of Earhart and her Electra Earhart was an aviation pioneer and the first female to fly solo across the Atlantic. Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan, disappeared on the 2nd July 1937, nearing the end of her attempted flight around the world, they vanished somewhere over the Pacific Ocean. There are many theories as to her loss. Most historians believe that Earhart ran out of fuel, crashed into the Pacific Ocean and sunk to the ocean s darkest depths. In recent years how-ever several alternatives have arisen One holds that they landed on uninhabited Nikumaroro Island and that Earhart and Noonan survived on the island for several weeks. They caught fish, seabirds and turtles and collected rainwater. Earhart died at their campsite on the island's southeast end. Noonan's fate is unknown. This is based on on-site investigations that have revealed improvised tools, bits of clothing, plexiglass and an aluminum panel. In May 2012, investigators found a jar of freckle cream that could have belonged to Earhart. Another is that Earhart and Noonan had survived the crash and were taken prisoner by the Japanese on Jaluit Atoll in the Marshall Islands. This theory is fuelled by the recollections of William 'Bill' Sablan, a resident of Guam whose uncle, Tun Akin Tuho, worked at the Saipan prison camp. Sablan, states that he remembered telling Tun in 1971 about how he hoped to become a pilot. Which triggered a memory in Tun, who recalled how two white pilots had been interned for several days on Saipan, then a Japanese hub, before they were executed. He said his uncle couldn't recall the exact date, but said that ' In the middle '30s' an American woman and man were brought in for questioning. They had been found in the southern islands and Japan had ordered them to be brought in. It seems Japan didn't want anything to do with them, as they didn't want to get involved in any scandal so killed them. Allen
