West.4 miles to Boulder Drive. Whiskeytown National Recreation Area Whiskeytown Lake is part of the Whiskeytown-Shasta-Trinity National Recreation area. Offering sandy beaches, marinas, camping facilities, excellent sailing and fishing, plus numerous marked hiking and mountain biking trails, Whiskeytown is a great place to cool off on a warm day. Situated on the south shore of the lake is a memorial to President John F. Kennedy, commemorating his dedication of the dam in 1963, shortly before his assassination. Art objects, pictures, mining tools, and weapons used in the 1854 Tong War are on display. Newly remodeled, you can now enjoy the relaxing, mood-enhancing ambiance of the Pre-Show Café before many shows. Located near the new Sundial Bridge at Turtle Bay on the banks of the beautiful Sacramento River, the lawn and parking lot areas surrounding the Convention Center are perfect for outdoor festivals like Kool April Nites. Shasta State Historic Park Old Shasta s historic brick buildings mark the location where the area s Queen City once stood during northern California s gold mining days. The park features an excellent museum that is still home to the original jail and gallows. The Litsch General Store and the Blumb Bakery have been restored to their original condition. Redding Convention Center Shasta State Historic Park Turtle Bay Exploration Park Turtle Bay Exploration Park is a 300-acre campus along the Sacramento River with educational and entertaining activities and experiences that interpret the relationship between humans and nature. The Park tells the story of the region and its people through a museum that includes an underground aquarium, Native American history and exhibits, interactive experiements, and rotating art exhibits; wildlife exhibits; Paul Bunyan s Forest Camp ; California s largest North American butterfly house; an amphitheater; and, across the Sacramento River on the north campus, the McConnell Arboretum & Gardens, featuring 20 acres of mediterranean climate display gardens, a children s garden, a medicinal garden, and two beautiful and unique water features. The park is also home to the Turtle Bay Cafe, which has captivating views of the Sundial Bridge and the Sacramento River. REGIONAL ATTRACTIONS Castle Crags Turtle Bay Museum Castle Crags State Park Named for the 225 million-year-old, 6,000-feet tall glacier-polished crags, this beautiful state park offers swimming and fishing in the Sacramento River, hiking in the back country, and a great view of Mt. Shasta. There are 76 developed campsites and 6 environmental campsites. RV camping up to 27 is available. The 4,350-acre park features 28 miles of hiking trails, including a 2.7 mile access trail to Castle Crags wilderness, part of the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. 7 Attractions Attractions Lassen Peak Mt. Shasta At 14,161 feet, snow-capped Mt. Shasta dominates the northern skies as you journey through the region. During winter, recreation enthusiasts can enjoy alpine skiing and snowboarding at the Mt. Shasta Board and Ski Park featuring two triple chair lifts and a surface tow. 300 miles of groomed trails offer cross-country skiers and snowmobilers a great way to explore this massive mountain. Shasta Board and Ski Park / 800-SKISHASTA / Snow Phone: I-5 north approximately 50 miles to Hwy 89 Lassen Volcanic National Park Less than an hour s drive from Redding sits beautiful Lassen Volcanic National Park. The park boasts incredible mountain scenery reminiscent of Yosemite as well as fascinating thermal wonders similar to Yellowstone with just a small fraction of the visitors of either of those National Parks! Lassen contains three of the four different types of geothermal features including fumaroles or steam vents, mudpots, and hot springs. The park is open yearround; however, access is usually limited from December May. Excellent cross-country skiing is available, as well as interpretive snowshoe tours led by park rangers. During the warm summer months in Redding, visit this spectacular park to experience spring all over again! From Redding, take Hwy 44 east approximately 48 miles to north entrance. From Red Bluff, take Hwy 36E to the south entrance. It takes approximately 1 hour to drive through the park non-stop. McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park Spectacular 129-foot Burney Falls can be enjoyed from the top at the lookout point, but for a more refreshing experience, take the trail to the pool at the base of the falls and along the stream. Excellent camping is available, with 118 campsites, newly constructed restroom facilities, hot water showers, stoves, tables, and food lockers. A boat ramp is also available at nearby Lake Britton. Shasta SPECIAL FEATURES Big League Dreams Sports Park The Redding Big League Dreams Sports Park is a world-class facility featuring replicas of the historic major-league stadiums of Boston s Fenway Park, Chicago s Wrigley Field, and New York s Yankee Stadium. The entire family can enjoy batting cages, an indoor climate controlled roller hockey, soccer and basketball arena, outdoor sand volleyball courts, and a childrens play area. 8 Attractions Attractions Cascade Theatre The Cascade Theatre, located in the heart of Downtown was built in It was a classic Downtown landmark featuring a large front facade with a neon pylon sign, marquee, and cast concrete frieze depicting northern California industry. Today, the Cascade Theatre is one of the finest examples of Art Deco architecture in northern California. The theater has been restored into a multi-use performing arts venue in a way that honors the building s heritage and is consistent with its designation on both the California and National Registries of Historic Places. Sundial Bridge at Turtle Bay This incredible glass decked pedestrian bridge links the north and south campuses of the new Turtle Bay Exploration Park and serves as a new entrance for Redding s Sacramento River Trail system. The unique design of the bridge was conceived by world renowned Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. It is the first bridge of its kind in the United States and the largest working sundial that is a bridge in the world! The massive 210 pylon leans due north and functions as the gnomon of a sundial, casting its giant shadow on a garden-bordered dial plate at the bridge s north end. The bridge is not only an artistic statement but is also sensitive to its beautiful river setting. Proceed through light, enter complex and stay right. Sundial Bridge Redding s Trails Redding s Sacramento River National Recreation Trail is part of Redding s growing trail system. Meandering over 9 miles along the banks of the beautiful Sacramento River, the wide, paved surface is popular for walking, jogging, roller blading and bicycle riding. Both this trail and the Sacramento Rail Trail have been designated by the United States Department of the Interior as National Recreation trails. Access is available from Hilltop Drive, Caldwell Park, and the beautiful Sundial Bridge. Redding s west side includes a variety of trails from the paved Blue Gravel Mine trail to the unpaved Westside Trails, offering a variety of hiking and biking opportunities. Redding Visitors Bureau / Sacramento River Trail Shasta Sunset Dinner Train Deep in the forest, punctuated with majestic views of snowcapped Mt. Shasta, the spires of Castle Crags, and the rugged Trinity Alps, the Shasta Sunset Dinner Train winds its way over tracks first laid over a century ago. 10 Activities Activities SCENIC DRIVES/BACK COUNTRY ROADS Canoeing on the Sacramento River KAYAKING/RAFTING/LAKE AND RIVER CRUISES If you re looking for a wild adventure, try white water rafting on the upper Sacramento River. Come with a spirit of adventure, and pick a trip of your own liking, from mild to wild! Since the upper Sacramento River is a wild river and not controlled by dam release, rafting is best here during the spring and early summer when winter snows melt. Rafting in the nearby Trinity Alps is usually available throughout the summer. Also available in far northern California are five other wild and scenic rivers within a two hour drive of Redding. These offer rafting opportunities from an exciting Class 3 trip to an extremely challenging Class 5 adventure. A variety of rafting companies lead trips from April through September.
