13 The Fayette Courthouse The initial structure was built in and designed by Edward M. Butz and William Kaufmann. The Fayette County Courthouse is located on Main Street in Uniontown. This beautiful Richardsonian Romanesque building was constructed with locally quarried stone and features arcaded windows, arched entryways and stone foliage carvings. The building contains many elegant furnishings including a stained glass skylight, an 8 2 statue of General Lafayette, marble floors, decorative iron staircase railings and four oval murals representing the leading industries of the time: coal, coke, agriculture and manufacturing. The courthouse is also connected to the jail via a rare Bridge of Sighs. The bridge was constructed in 1902 and is only of only three left in the entire world. The courthouse also contains a time capsule filled with documents and photographs dating back to the late 1700s. The capsule can be found in the cornerstone of the courthouse. Through all of the decades, this building has tried, hung, convicted, and released many people. Today, it is still the central building where justice is served East Main St, Uniontown, PA Mon-Fri 8AM-4:30PM Frank L. 14 Television took away a sizable audience and the movie theatre trend turned to multiple screens and smaller auditoriums. The State Theatre closed in June of The State Theatre was designed by one of America s foremost theatre architects, Thomas Lamb. Lamb, famous for the designs of the Pantages Theater in Toronto (now the Canon Theatre) and New York s Ziegfeld Theatre is best known for his work in the 18th century Robert Adam s style of architecture and for his fine acoustical planning. The Ingstrip-Burke Company of Chicago, art designers, decorated the interior of the Moderne structure in the Adam s style. The theme was that of refinement of line and chasteness of ornamentation. The artist in charge, Michael Tomlin, educated at the School of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg, Russia, pronounced himself well-satisfied: It is better than I hoped, it is what I dreamed. The State Theatre was hailed as the largest, finest and most beautiful playhouse in Western Pennsylvania. Upon its opening in the fall of 1922 to many accolades, it promptly was declared a picture palace showing silent movies while also presenting vaudeville s finest acts routed on the B.F. Keith Circuit. The State Symphony Orchestra held forth in the pit with a $40,000 Pleubet Master Organ (approximately $513,600 adjusted for inflation) for accompanying the silent films to set the mood. As music trends shifted and the Big Band sound emerged the State hosted many of the country s greatest musical attractions including Paul Whiteman, Glen Gray and the Dorsey Brothers. When the State started showing films with sound the State was the third theatre in the nation to employ projected sound films the popularity of talkies signaled the beginning of the end for in house musicians and the end of vaudeville. While the greatest names of Hollywood flickered across the screen and epics such as Gone With the Wind drew record audiences, the State s days as a movie palace were numbered. After a few years the theatre reopened as The State Music Hall. It featured country and western as well as pop music legends like Johnny Cash, Slim Whitman, Kool and the Gang, Waylon Jennings, Peaches and Herb, and The Statler Brothers. Though popular for a time, the State Music Hall concept wasn t viable and the theatre closed again. In 1988, The Greater Uniontown Heritage Consortium purchased the theatre, restored its name and, in 1989, began presenting a series of professional programs ranging from Broadway musicals to big bands, symphonies to country music superstars. The State Theatre offers a children s series of shows and provides educational programming for school groups. The State Theatre Center for the Arts has played the leading role in bringing quality entertainment to Uniontown. Today, the Grand Old Lady of Main Street attracts more than 20,000 patrons annually with a full slate of concerts, Broadway musicals, plays, and community events. 25 Braddock s Grave In 1755, one year after George Washington s defeat at Fort Necessity and the start of the French and Indian War, the British officer Major General Edward Braddock was selected to lead the campaign. Braddock personally commanded a regiment to attack the French at Fort Duquesne, located present day Pittsburgh. Washington accompanied Braddock as an aide. On July 9, 1755, while the expedition was enroute to Fort Duquesne, the British were surprised by French and Indian forces which totally overwhelmed the British contingent. The elite British force suffered horrendous losses and were forced to retreat. Although Braddock had been schooled in the art of Warfare in England, his tactics were no match for the French and Indian allies. Braddock himself was among the severely wounded. On their retreat n July 13, the British camped about one mile west of the former Fort Necessity when Braddock succumed to his injuries. The general was buried in the road to obliterate any traces of the grave s whereabouts, fearing that a marked grave would only permit the Indians to uncover and desecrate the remains. The army then continued its retreat on to eastern Pennsylvania. Braddock s grave monument commemorates General Braddock s final resting place. This pleasant little park has undergone a nice renovation and is located on Route 40. It generally can be viewed in minutes. Historical markers interpret the events leading to Braddock s death. One marker speaks of the site s significance over a much broader time period. Nemacolin Castle Overlooking the Monongahela River, Nemacolin Castle stands proudly as silent witness to Brownsville s historic past. Within the spacious interior are twenty-two furnished rooms which reflect early life in America from Colonial times to the late Victorian era. Included in the collection are many original Bownman family furnishings. In 1789, Jacob Bowman, a pioneer merchant from Hagerstown, Maryland, built a frontier trading post on the approximate site of Old Fort Burd. Active in business and commerce, Bowman was an important figure in the early development of Brownsville. In 1795 President Washington named Bowman Brownsville s first postmaster. In the years that followed, a mansion was build around the simplistic trading post. For several generations, the castle was home to the Bowman family. Today, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and it open to the public. Attend our First Castle Car Cruise! 26 Fort Necessity National Battlefield The confrontation at Fort Necessity in the summer of 1754 was the opening battle of the war fought by England and France for control of the North American continent. It was also the opening episode of a worldwide struggle known in North America as the French and Indian War. It ended in 1763 with the expulsion of French power from North America and India. The action at Fort Necessity was also the first major event in the military career of George Washington, and it marked the only time he ever surrendered to an enemy. Rival claims between the French and the English to the vast territory along the Ohio River between the Appalachian Mountains and the Mississippi approached a climax about The Ohio Company (organized in 1748 by a group of prominent Englishmen and Virginians who saw the economic and financial potential of the area) had obtained a large grant of 200,000 acres in the upper Ohio River Valley. From its post at Wills Creek, now Cumberland, Maryland, the company planned additional settlements and started to pen an 80-mile wagon road to the Monongahela River. Meanwhile, the French, who considered the Ohio a vital link between New France (Canada) and Louisiana, advanced southward and westward, from Fort Niagara on Lake Ontario, driving out English traders and claiming the Ohio River Valley for France. In 1753, Governor Robert Dinwiddie of Virginia learned the French has built Fort Presque Isle near Lake Erie and Fort Le Boeyf in that part of the Ohio country claimed by Virginia. He sent an eight-man expedition under George Washington, then only 21 years old, made the journey in midwinter of The French refusal to withdraw set the stage for the events that took place at Fort Necessity. In January 1754, even before he learned of the French refusal to abandon the Ohio Valley, Governor Dinwiddle sent a small force of Virginia soldiers to build a fort at the forks of the Ohio, where Pittsburgh now stands. The stockade was barely finished when a French force drove off the Virginians and built a larger fort on the site. The French called it Fort Duquesne in honor of the Marquis de Duquesne, who had recently become governor of New France. When told the fort was in French hands, he resolved to push on to Redstone Creek and await further instructions. His force was well beyond Wills Creek when Colonel Joshua Fry, commanding the expedition, arrived there with the rest of the Virginia Regiment near the end of May. (When Fry died at Will Creek on May 31, Washington assumed command of the regiment and was promoted to colonel.) 27 Washington arrived at the Great Meadows, as the Fort Necessity area was then called, on May 24. Although the meadow was nearly all marsh, he believed it a charming field for an encounter and ordered his men to set an encampment. Three days later, after hearing that a group of French soldiers had been spotted about seven miles away on Chestnut Ridge, Washington and 40 men set out to find them. At dawn on May 28, the Virginians reached the camp of Tanacharison, a friendly Seneca chief known as the Half King. His scouts led them to the ravine about two miles to the north where the French were encamped. The French, commanded by Joseph Coulon de Villiers, Sieur de Jumonville, were taken by surprise. Ten were killed, including Jumonville, one was wounded, and 21 were made prisoner. One man escaped to carry the news back to Fort Duquesne. Washington s command suffered only one man killed and two wounded. Fearing we might be attacked by considerable forces, Washington undertook to fortify his position at the Great Meadows. During the last two days of May and the first three days of June, he built a circular palisade fort, which he called Fort Necessity. The rest of the Virginia regiment arrived at the Great Meadows on June 9, along with supplies and nine swivel guns. Washington s command now totaled 293 officers and men. He was reinforced several days later by about 100 men of Captain James Mackay s independent Company of regular British troops from South Carolina. Washington s attempts to retain his Indian allies were not successful. The next day, they strengthened Fort Necessity by improving the trenches outside the stockade. On the morning of July 3, a force of about 600 French and 100 Indians approached the fort. After the French took up positions in the woods, Washington withdrew his men to the entrenchments. Rain fell throughout the day, flooding the marshy ground. Both sides suffered casualties, but the British losses were greater than French and Indian losses. The fighting continued sporadically until about 8pm, then Captain Louis Coulon de Villiers, commander of the French force and brother of Jumonville, requested a truce to discuss the surrender of Washington s command. Near midnight, after several hours of negotiation, the terms were reduced to writing and signed by Washington and Mackay. The British were allowed to withdraw with honors of war, retaining their baggage and weapons, but having to surrender their swivel guns. The British troops left Fort Necessity for Willis Creek on the morning of July 4, from there they marched back to Virginia. The French burned Fort Necessity and afferwards returned to Fort Duquesne Washington Parkway, Farmington, PA While the South Carolinians remained at the Great Meadows, Washington and his Virginians spent most of June opening a road from Fort Necessity to Gist s Plantation, a frontier settlement in the direction of the folks of the Ohio. Reports that a large force of French and Indians was advancing from Fort Duquesne, however, caused him to withdraw his men to the Great Meadows, where they arrived July 1. 6 Oliver Road, Uniontown, PA facebook.com/spunkymonkeyfuncenter SOON - Open 7 days a week 10am-7pm + Now managed by the same folks who brought you SeaBase in Greensburg!
