2 Scavenger Hunt: Engineering at LEGOLAND Florida Resort 1. Structural engineering: Visit the red dinosaur in The Beginning Zone. Some of the LEGO models you see at LEGOLAND Florida Resort have internal bracing to support the weight of the model, just like you would in full scale buildings. See below pictures labeled Frame 1 and Frame 2 for examples of LEGO parts used to support some of our buildings. We also use steel internal frames to support the weight of some of our large models. See pictures labeled Dinosaur Steel Frame and Fire hose Dino to look at the plans for the large red dino located at the park entrance right behind the turnstiles. Electrical Engineering: Visit Miniland USA to see animated movement in some of the LEGO Models. We use a lot of electrical components to operate or control our animation systems.

3 Mechanical Engineering: Visit The Dragon in LEGO Kingdoms. We use various methods of mechanical engineering to make the models move. See the picture below to look at some of our Pneumatic actuators (arms that move by air) that move the dragon head in the Castle located in LEGO Kingdoms. Electrical Engineering: Visit Miniland USA to see animated movement in some of the LEGO Models. We use a lot of electrical components to operate or control our animation systems. We have units called show controllers that operate PLC s (Programmable Logic Circuits), which sends electrical signals to the solenoid valves (see picture below) to control the air actuators that make the models move. In Miniland, we use Servo motors to operate the cars that drive around on a wireless track being controlled by a wire that is imbedded in the road. The car gets the signal through an RF (Radio Frequency) receiver. The RF signal is broadcasted from the imbedded wire in the ground and the car follows the strongest signal and stays on its path. 3

The steel contained in all the bolts, nuts and washers would build eight Ford Fiesta automobiles. 14,000 feet of electrical wire was used. o Enough to wire 3 single family homes. 8,419 hours of labor (in house and contracted) of which 1,520 was overtime. o Equal to over 4 people working an entire year. 6

7 Structural Engineering: An overlapping building technique called stacks utilizes wood to reinforce the structural integrity of Coastersaurus. 7

8 Electrical and Mechanical Engineering: There is an electrical station that initially starts the power to the ride with a motor. Proximity sensors and brakes tell the ride where to start, slow down and stop. A chain system pulls the train up to the top of the hill and the rest is gravity at work! One ride on Coastersaurus lasts approximately 2 minutes and 20 seconds. The time will vary depending on a variety of factors. What factors affect the speed of the Coastersaurus ride? o Gravity o Friction o Wind resistance o Aerodynamics o Weather conditions 8

9 What happens when you are riding Coastersaurus? The train is parked in the station. The operator opens the queue gates to let the guests enter the coaster train and sit in the coach. The operator releases the lap bars so the guest may lower them. The attendant checks the lap bar to verify that it is secure. After the operator and the two ride attendants give the thumbs up signal, the operator and one attendant each press the Dispatch button. Pressing both dispatch buttons releases both station brakes. Via gravity, the train starts to roll out of the station, down the hill to the base of the lift. The momentum of the moving train starts the train going up the lift hill. About two feet past the bottom of the chain the Chain dogs catch the chain, and the train is pulled up to the top of the hill. The train travels down the hill, building momentum and speed to crest the next hill and this process is repeated for the entire ride. The height of each hill is slightly lower than the previous hill. Prior to reaching the last turn, the train is slowed down slightly by a trim brake. After going through the turn, the train passes through another trim brake. Sensors under the track monitor the speed of the train and determine how much to open and how fast to open the three main brakes. Once the train is at a safe speed, it will proceed to the station where the station brakes will slow the train. Once the train is at a good position, the train is considered parked. The operator unlocks the lap bars for the guest to exit the coaches and opens the queue gates for the next set of guests to enter. Now it s your turn to play your part on Coastersaurus! 9
