2 Welcome Hello and welcome to our optional booklet for We have created individual books for all of our regions, so if you are studying in England, Scotland, Vancouver, Toronto, San Diego or New York, you will find a much greater selection of entrances suggested to enhance your time with Oxford International. Introduction Optional excursions 2018 As well as new attractions, we have expanded those that are able to offer that little something extra for students, whether through workshops, private collections or alternative tours. Each page contains an overview of the destination, what the students will see and do, and what they get for their money. On most attractions they can benefit from our trade rate discounts! Please take the time to have a good read of this information and contact us with any questions. It is very helpful for us if you book these optional excursions ahead of your trip. However, it is of course possible for your group leaders to book them from their Activity Manager when they arrive at their centres. Please note that this list is by no means exhaustive. If there is somewhere not listed here that your groups really want to see, please contact us and we will gladly price the excursion for you. 3 Politics & Royalty Buckingham Palace The most famous palace in the world and home to Her Majesty the Queen and the Royal Family. With changing exhibitions, stunning surroundings and the chance to view state rooms (21st July - 30th September only), this is a truly wonderful attraction. Exhibitions 2018 : Splendours of the Subcontinent: A Prince's Tour of India In October 1875, the Prince of Wales set off on a four-month tour of the Indian Subcontinent, visiting over 21 localities that today encompass India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Nepal. The exhibition tells the story of this grand tour through the jewellery, gold and silverware and ceremonial arms presented to the future King Edward VII by local rulers as part of the traditional exchange of gifts. Cost: Houses of Parliament Take a tour of the Houses of Parliament, the world s most iconic building, for a unique combination of one thousand years of history, modern day politics and stunning architecture. This attraction is very popular, and has restricted availability when Parliament is in session, so we highly recommend enquiring about this as soon as possible. Special Exhibition 2018: Throughout 2018 the Houses of Parliament will be celebrating 100 years of women s suffrage in the UK. A summer exhibition covering women s attempts to influence Parliament, the campaign for votes for women, and the representation of women in the Commons and the Lords will be held in Westminster Hall. Self-guided tour Guided tour Hampton Court Palace This magnificent Tudor Palace set by the River Thames was begun in 1514 as a country residence for Thomas Wolsey, Lord Chancellor and Cardinal to Henry VIII. Costumed guides and audio tours will lead you through royal corridors, grand apartments and lavish bedrooms Special Exhibition 2018: Henry VIII s Kitchens come to life In 2018, Hampton Court Palace s Tudor Kitchens will be reanimated with culinary smells, sounds and sights, recreating the well-oiled machine that powered Henry VIII s magnificent court. This will include grand displays of food, complete with aromas, the heat of the fireplaces, and the bustling sound of the busy serjeants and their staff who operated the Kitchens all of which has been driven by extensive curatorial research. COST: Kensington Palace Marital home of Her Royal Highness Princess Diana, Kensington Palace is truly enchanting. A royal home since 1702, set just on the edge of Hyde Park and within walking distance of High Street Kensington. To mark the anniversary of the death of Princess Diana, Kensington Palace opened a special exhibition about the Princess, this includes some of her most famous outfits and historical artefacts. 6 Thameside Tower of London Within the well guarded walls of the Tower of London you will also discover the history of a royal palace. Special Exhibition: Imprisonment at the Tower New interpretation will be coming to the Tower of London in spring 2018 to explore its fascinating history as one of the country s most infamous prisons. The Bloody Tower will tell the story of high status prisoners such as Sir Walter Raleigh, who was confined there in relative comfort, even having his own tobacco garden. Opening Ceremony Get ahead of the crowds and book your group to witness the Military Guard escort the Yeoman Sergeant along Water Lane to open the great gates at the Byward and Middle Towers to let in the visitors for the day. 7 Thameside Shakespeare s Globe This Exhibition explores the life of Shakespeare, the London where he lived and the theatre for which he wrote. A fascinating guided tour takes you into the unique space of the wooden theatre by the Thames the Globe! This theatre is an exact replica of Shakespeare s original theatre, and continues to host plays performed as they were originally intended. These performances are designed for all, just as they were back when they were first performed, and the Globe honours this tradition by offering special discounted tickets, sometimes for as little as 5 per person. This tickets are standing only, and audience members who take this option are known as groundlings. Although standing, they give the chance to stand almost directly in front of the stage as the action unfolds in front, and often around you! If you would like to attend a performance at the Globe, please enquire about the various options, or speak to your Activity Manager at your campus. NEW for 2018 Bankside Tour New for this year, you can enhance your visit adding a Bankside Tour, delivered by experts. The 30-minute tour starts at the Globe exhibition and delves into the history of Bankside as a theatre district during Shakespeare s time. This tour will transport you back to Elizabethan London highlighting interesting historical landmarks of the area, including the former locations of the original Globe and Rose theatres. Live Exhibitions Elizabethan Dressing Using clothes from the Globe Theatre wardrobe, students will discover the intricacies of dressing and the significance of clothing in Elizabethan society. Learn new vocabulary and facts about Shakespeare and his contemporaries while someone from your group is dressed as a character from a Shakespeare play. COST: 80 per group Shakespeare s use of stage fighting Enjoy an exciting demonstration of Elizabethan stage combat techniques. This workshop includes an explanation of how stage fighting was used by Shakespeare and his contemporaries in Early Modern plays. COST: 100 per group Printing the plays Unfortunately, hardly anything written in Shakespeare s hand survives today: we have his plays and poems only because they were printed as books. Using a full-size recreation of a 17th-century printing press, students will be shown the amazingly sophisticated methods behind making books. COST: 60 per group Demonstration prices are per group max of 50 people per group. All workshops last for approximately 30 minutes. All activities are subject to availability and must be booked in advance to avoid disappointment. Cost Exhibition and Globe tour: 9.00 Cost Exhibition and Bankside tour: Workshops International Workshop: Introducing Shakespeare and the Globe This workshop is a lively introduction for international students who have little knowledge of Shakespeare s work, or who have studies the plays in translation. This workshops can also be bespoke, please send us your requirements and we will find the perfect workshop for your group, whether you want them to focus on a specific play, or learn speaking in public techniques, amongst many others! COST: 12 per student - or minimum charge of 220 per group. This includes a half hour tour of the Globe and a one hour workshop. Groups up to 30 students. 7

8 London Bridge Experience War, fire, murder. London Bridge has seen it all. The London Bridge Experience really is an interactive, character filled journey through history. This is the scariest attraction in London, where it is Halloween every day of the year! Cost: St Paul s Cathedral St Paul s is an iconic part of London s skyline, but a visit inside this impressive cathedral will reveal so much more than its impressive façade. The interior has glittering mosaics and intricate stone carvings as well as unrivalled views. Most impressive the entrance includes a climb up into the dome itself not for the faint-hearted as it takes place on a cast iron floor with grating showing the long drop to the floor of the cathedral below! Cost: 7.50 Tower Bridge Exhibition: Enjoy stunning views from the high-level walkways of Tower Bridge and learn about its inner workings in the Victoria Engine Rooms. The difficult choice will be whether to visit during the day or after dark for a picture of London s lights. COST: London Dungeon In the dark and dingy underbelly of the capital the London Dungeon dwells, waiting to shock you at every turn! Be warned at the London Dungeons you are more than a spectator. COST: London Sea Life The London Sea Life is home to one of Europe s largest collections of global marine life! The experience takes visitors on an immersive journey along the Great Oceanic Conveyor to see over 1,000 sea creatures. COST: Madame Tussauds Step inside and be immersed in a world of famous fun, from Bollywood to Hollywood, music to sport, social to stardom where you can even join the Royal Family for an official photoshoot or grab a selfie with your favourite celebrity. Dare you walk the catwalk alongside Cara at our exclusive fashion show? Or will you take the hot seat with will.i.am to see if you ve got what it takes to be a coach in our new interactive The Voice UK experience? Come face-to-face with an eighteen-foot animatronic Kong head in the Kong: Skull Island experience alongside Tom Hiddleston. Learn about the history of the woman herself, Marie Tussaud, before you sit back and enjoy a ride through 400 years of London s history in our iconic taxi ride. 11 Musicals Come and experience theatrical performances presented in many professional theatres, more commonly known as the West End! Along with New York s Broadway theatres, West End theatres are widely considered to represent the highest level of commercial theatre in the English-speaking world. Great examples of musicals available include Aladdin, Matilda, Wicked, the Phantom of the Opera, and Lion King! If there is a show you particularly want to see, please ask, and we will inquire on your behalf. COST: Workshops Make your trip to London even more special by taking part in a West End workshop! The sessions are led by current and recent West End members, guaranteeing your group the absolute best experience. This year we will be offering The Lion King Workshop and Matilda Workshop. These run for 2 hours and will take place in central London, either in theatres or studios where the West End cast run rehearsals. COST: Coliseum Backstage Tour Come on a journey back to Christmas Eve, 1904, and the dramatic events of the Coliseum s opening night. Learn of its rich and colourful years as a Palace of Variety and later, of its transformation into the Opera House of today. Witness for yourselves a small section of a ENO working day. The tour is full of stories, characters, anecdotes and facts, but its star is the theatre itself, of course, viewed in all its glory from inside the astonishing auditorium. The Tour, which lasts up to an hour and a half, starts in the foyer and does an entire circuit of the building, including the backstage area. There are rather a lot of staircases to climb (not suitable for people with mobility problems). This tour usually runs every day of the week at 11:00h or 14:00h. COST:

12 Greenwich is one of the most famous boroughs of London, containing a host of historical sites, along with the beautiful Greenwich Park which has one of the great views of London on your way to the Royal Observatory. Along with the bustling Greenwich market, Greenwich is a fantastic place to spend a day exploring during your time in London. Royal Observatory The prime meridian runs through the courtyard of the Royal Observatory in Greenwich which was founded in 1675 by King Charles II. Head up Greenwich Hill and stand in both the East and West hemispheres! COST: 6.50 National Maritime Museum The National Maritime Museum reveals inspirational stories and breath-taking accounts of discovery and adventure connecting Britain s maritime past with our lives today! 14 Warner Bros and Theme Parks Warner Bros The Harry Potter film series made Leavesden its home for more than ten years. As the films were being made, the production crew saved many of the iconic sets, props and costumes that were created especially for the films. Once filming wrapped on Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 in 2010, the production crew were left with a treasure trove of thousands of intricate artefacts. Take a tour of these studios and enter a world of magic, mystery and mayhem! From the Great Hall to Dumbledore s Office, Harry s cupboard under the stairs to Snape s Classroom, this is truly a unique experience. COST: Chessington World of Adventures Chessington World of Adventures is a theme park that includes 10 themes lands and over 40 rides and attractions! Add in a Zoo, Sea Life Centre and daily shows and Chessington is definitely Britain s Wildest Adventure. Each LEGOLAND is bursting with interactive rides, live shows, building workshops, and amazing attractions, including awe-inspiring Miniland areas reflecting iconic buildings and attractions from the Resort location all built using the iconic LEGO brick. A new awesome world of ninjas came to the LEGOLAND Windsor Resort during Spring 2017 with the launch of LEGO NINJAGO World, featuring the UK s first ever 4D, hand gesture enabled ride. 15 Castles Warwick Castle With virtually every stone soaked in the history and mystery of more than 1,000 years, Warwick castle is probably the castle to visit in England. COST: New for 2018 : Meet the Owls You may book this new experience, where owls will be presented to your group with the opportunity to photograph and touch the birds. The Falconer will explain the origin and habitat of the birds and there will be time for questions during this session lasting approximately 30 minutes. Group size min. 15 students. COST: 4.00 per student (price may vary depending on group size) Dover Castle The most iconic of all English fortresses commanding the gateway to the realm for nine centuries. Climb the Great Tower, meet the characters and immerse yourself in vivid medieval interiors. Hever Castle Historic Hever Castle and Gardens, with its enchanting double-moated castle and 125 acres of spectacular gardens to explore, offers students plenty to discover and enjoy. You can explore the once home of Anne Boleyn (the second wife of Henry VIII), the magnificent Italian, Rose and Tudor gardens, topiary yew maze and splashing water maze! COST: Castle and Gardens: 7.00 Guided tour: Windsor Castle Windsor Castle is the oldest and largest inhabited castle in the world. It has been the family home of British kings and queens for almost 1,000 years. It is an official residence of Her Majesty the Queen, whose standard flies from the Round Tower hen she is in residence. Take a trip to Windsor Castle and see whether you can spot the Queen.
