3 Guelph Guelph Getting Guelph There: GettingGuelph Guelph GUELPH There: Take Hwy. 401 and exit at Hwy. 6 North Guelphfest is just one of the many events that enliven downtown Guelph all season long. G uelph is a community replete with the unexpected. It is not unusual to find people who visited this historic city sometime in the past, who think they know everything about Guelph. It is also not unusual for them to be entirely wrong. Guelph has grown into a complex, culturally rich, diverse and entertaining city. Once upon a time, the university here was known for its agricultural emphasis; today, that tradition continues in a very strong environmental, scientific and research tradition, but the university is also ranked as one of the best in Canada, with the attendant expertise and innovation in culture, art, music and drama. Guelph s interest in the arts Information: Guelph Visitor And Convention Services, , visitinfo@city.guelph.on.ca or O extends far beyond the university campus. This is home to music festivals like the Downtown Guelph Jazz Festival (Sept ), to concert halls and arts centres. A summertime highlight is Guelphfest, Sunday, August 1. This exciting event, The Spirit of the Pioneer, celebrates the history and people of Guelph through the arts, entertainment and education. Guelphfest events take place at River Run Centre, at Old Quebec Street, and at the Guelph Sports & Entertainment Centre. This civic celebration offers a huge menu of attractions, from children s games and storytelling to a Town Crier Competition, from sheep shearing and quilting to a log sawing competition. There is lots of entertain- continued on page 25 l VISITOR GUIDE l Summer 2004 l l SEE PG 4 Guelph Civic Museum 6 Dublin Street South McCrae House 108 Water Street For more information: (519) Come to the Guelph Farmers Market A place with rustic flavour and friendly merchants. Shopping opportunities abound throughout the city, from the most elegant, such as La Crème, to the most traditional, like the Guelph Farmers Market, every Saturday. Diners can expect an eclectic mix of culinary opportunities, including Georgian Creed. Guelph is home to a number of excellent museums and art galleries, including the Guelph Civic Museum and McCrae House, home the poet who wrote the famous In Flanders Fields. Another locale for perhaps slightly more raucous performances is the popular Aud the Kitchener Auditorium, home to hockey and a wide variety of shows and performances, year round. Kitchener is also home to creative local theatre groups and more than its share of talented musicians whose music is on offer in venues around the city, every weekend. Or, if you tend to the outdoor take on cultural activities, this city has fine parks, the exciting attractions of Sportsworld, and excellent golf courses, including municipal courses Doon Valley and Rockway.
