5 COMMUNITY PROFILE Throughout its history, Walpole has always attracted a diversity of people to settle within its boundaries. The town is just 19 miles south of Boston, 26 miles north of Providence and 205 miles from New York City. Because of the natural resources of Great Cedar Swamp and the Neponset River, Walpole has always maintained a strong industrial base. Yet, with 20 square miles of rolling terrain, many families found the charm of its rural character an ideal place to raise a family. Thus, over time, the town evolved into a growing bedroom community with a stable mix of commercial and industrial land uses. In 1708, the mill workers of Walpole petitioned the town meeting of Dedham to form a township, setting their own boundaries and freeing themselves of Dedham s tax burden. The petition was granted and the new town was named Walpole, in honor of England s Prime Minister, Sir Robert Walpole, a staunch friend of the American colonies. Walpole was incorporated as a township in Development in Walpole has been wisely planned to provide conservation areas and recreational parks.
