5 c o m m u n i t y p r o f i l e Freehold Township was first inhabited by the Lenni Lenape Indians, then settled by the Dutch, and formally established in 1693 as one of the three original townships in Monmouth County. Rich in colonial culture, major military leaders George Washington and Benedict Arnold fought the Battle of Monmouth at the town s doorsteps for independence. Now known as the Oakley Farm Museum, the original house of the Walker Combs Hartshorne Farm was one of the few homes left standing after the Battle of Monmouth, and also held a place in history during the Civil War as a stopping off point for the Underground Railroad. Conveniently located halfway between New York City and Philadelphia, Freehold Township is now home to an excellent school system, first-rate municipal services and the area s premier retail shopping location, the Freehold Raceway Mall.
