5 Community Profile Mount Olive Township consists of a number of quaint towns named after the original settlers. It is a prospering community, 33 square miles in area and includes the sections of Mt. Olive, Flanders, Smithtown, Drakestown, Bartley, Waterloo, and Budd Lake. The Lenni-Lenape Tribe of Native Americans inhabited the area until 1750 and left behind many well-defined trails and names still used today. The natural and abundant resources of the area attracted the early settlers. In 1708 the proprietors of the Colonial State of New Jersey bought a large portion of the land from the Lenni- Lenape. In 1740 the land was divided into various townships. Mount Olive was one of these townships and it became independent in After the establishment of the initial settlements, industrialists capitalized on creating gristmills, sawmills, tanneries and creameries. Natural iron and mineral deposits were mined and used in the construction of forges, fuel works and farms. The historic Morris Canal provided freight transportation and was a main commerce route between New Jersey and Pennsylvania until the emergence of the railroad. Prosperity continued into the early 20th century; Budd Lake became a well-known vacation spot, and Mount Olive grew. The onset of World War II brought about a decline in the resort industry, but the growth of Mount Olive continued. Today, Mount Olive is a bustling township that blends rural solitude with the convenience of an urban center and easy accessibility to Routes 46, 206 and 10, and Interstates 80, 78 and 287. With businesses, corporate centers, entertainment and leisure activities nearby, Mount Olive is an ideal location to live, work, and call home.
