2 This directory is designed to help residents of Eaton County manage unwanted household generated items in the most environmentally responsible manner possible. Whether you have regular household trash, good but unwanted furniture, or an old car bumper, the Garbage Guide can help. Many of the programs and services listed inside can also be used by local business, including farmers and other agricultural producers. When disposing of an item, first decide whether or not the item has value. If it can be reused in its current form, consider selling the item on consignment or donating it to a thrift store or local charity. If the item is no longer suitable for use, consider what it is made of and if it can be reused for another purpose or recycled. For instance, plastic grocery sacks can be used to line waste paper baskets, or they could be recycled at various local grocery stores. Metal items like bicycles, old metal sinks, and car parts have value as scrap metal which can be recycled. Waste Reduction is the first strategy used to manage waste. Generate less waste by utilizing resources efficiently, like purchasing items in bulk or using a mulching mower instead of bagging grass clippings. Reusing (donating or finding an alternative use for an items) and Recycling (remanufacturing items into new products) are then used to further mitigate waste. Disposal is the final option that includes placing waste in a regulated landfill or waste-to-energy facility (incinerator). When donating, make sure your items are clean and in very good condition. Never donate trash this constitutes illegal dumping. Always call the business to get the latest hours of operation and to make sure your items meet acceptable guidelines before dropping them off. A great place to offer usable items for free (and sometimes items you may no longer think are usable but others may) is It is a community based website allowing people to offer items for free to others in the community. Materials and services are free of charge to K-12 educators, home schooling, youth groups, as well as adult learners. 4
5 Environmental education programs offered by the county seek to connect participants to the natural environment to build awareness of critical issues and motivate participation in conservationminded behaviors such as waste reduction, reuse, recycling, composting, and saving natural resources used for energy and fuel. The hope is that by making tools and materials readily available, educators can easily access programming that both meets state education standards and exposes youth to key environmental issues in ways that inspire positive behavioral change. The environmental educator can also work with educators to develop unique programming to meet individual needs. Assistance is available for projects and activities such as: rain, butterfly and community garden development, outdoor activities, nature walks, geocaching, outdoor scavenger hunts, pond explorations, water testing, nature photography, tree planting, and just about any outdoor environmental education activity! Liquid captured in landfills can end up in waterways and in groundwater through leaching and runoff. Wastewater treatment plants are unable to screen for medications, which means medications flushed down the toilet end up being discharged directly into our lakes and streams. Help keep Michigan healthy by taking unwanted medications to a Hazardous waste collection. Eaton County Department of Resource Recovery accepts medications at their Household Hazardous Waste events three times annually. Medications are also accepted year-round during open hours at the following locations: Non-Controlled Substances Fruin Pharmacy 117 N Main St, Bellevue (269) Rottenbucher Pharmacy 124 S Main St, Eaton Rapids (517) Sparrow Pharmacy Plus 1015 Charlevoix, Grand Ledge (517)
