5 LMPD Drug Disposal Medication products should NEVER be flushed down the toilet or drain, burned in the open or thrown in the trash because: They can contaminate the environment if they get into the drinking and ground water. They may kill bacteria or produce drug resistance bacteria in sewage treatment plants and septic systems if flushed down the drain. Burning can release toxic pollutants into the air. They can be scavenged from your trash receptacles to be illegally used or sold. They can be taken mistakenly and cause serious health problems. Here are some of the items the Expired Drug Toss organizers are encouraging residents to bring in: *Expired or unused medications *Bulk or loose tablets and capsules * Medications that should have been kept cold but were not Items NOT accepted at Drug Toss Events: *Used or unused sharps, hypodermic needles & lances *Cosmetics, personal care or hygiene items Due to the volume of drugs brought to our sites, we ask that immediately before bringing your medications to one of our sites, place all tablets and capsules into a zip-lock bag. Vials (with personal information marked out) should be placed into another bag/container. Also, place bottled liquids and tubes of medication into separate bags. This will help us process everything more quickly. For the safety of your family, please keep all medications, properly closed in their original child- resistant containers and transfer to bags immediately prior to your visit. **NO CLINICS, MEDICAL OFFICES or PHARMACIES PLEASE** Representatives from Louisville Metro Police will be on hand to make sure all products will be safely collected and properly disposed according to EPA standards.

6 Recycle Medical Supplies & Equipment SOS DONATION GUIDELINES THINK GREEN & RECYCLE Thank you for recycling leftover medical supplies or medical equipment with Supplies Over Seas (SOS). SOS looks for usable and needed donations that meet high product standards for our medical surplus donations to hospitals and clinics around the world. SOS recovers surplus medical supplies and redistributes them to medical impoverished communities around the world. Founded in 1993 by Dr. Norton Waterman and members of the Greater Louisville Medical Society, SOS s environmental and humanitarian aid mission has aided over 100 countries with lifesaving items that would otherwise have gone into our landfills.

7 THINK GREEN & RECYCLE Acceptable Donations Items must be in good working order with all necessary parts and acceptable to patients regardless of economic status. Items can be gently used. Unable to Accept as a Donation - SOS is unable to accept the following: IV Fluids or Liquids; Liquid Nutrition; Pharmaceutical Drugs; Prosthesis devices; Hazardous Materials and NO items exposed to pathogens. Call First - To ensure your donation is one that SOS will be able to accept, please call SOS before bringing any donation to the SOS warehouse. It is very helpful to send via a list of the items you want to donate so the SOS staff can review the donation. How to Donate After your items are approved by phone or , bring your donations to Supplies Over Seas (1500 Arlington Ave.) warehouse located off of Spring Street in the Butchertown neighborhood. For security and insurance reasons, SOS staff and volunteers are not able to pick up at private home locations. Hours 8 AM to 5 PM, Monday-Friday. We are also open the 2 nd & 4 th Saturday of each month (except in May and December) from 9 AM to Noon. Organize a Medical Recycling Event Corporate, Faith-Based, School, Neighborhood, Scout Troop or Service Groups can help SOS remove useful items from our area landfills by organizing a medical recycling event and asking participants to donate leftover medical supplies and equipment.
