3 Fire Department and Burning Permit Information for all Aurelius Township Residents Mason Fire (non-emergency) Burning Permits City of Mason Fire Department provides services to all of Aurelius Township. Fire Department Information BURNING PERMIT REGULATIONS YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE IF YOUR FIRE GETS OUT OF CONTROL. Hours of burning will be from sunrise to sunset. There will be absolutely NO BURNING AL- LOWED AFTER DARK. All fires must be supervised by an adult, 18 years or older at all times. The burning of building or construction materials, petroleum products, plastics, rubber product, chemicals, asphalt, treated or painted wood products or any other hazardous or noxious material shall not be permitted. Burning is not allowed in extremely dry conditions or if winds are greater than 10 mph. You should not burn when the wind is in such a direction that smoke will be an annoyance to your neighbors. Your permit may be revoked at any time if environmental conditions for burning are not favorable. Unsupervised and unauthorized fires will be extinguished, and you will be billed for the fire run. You do not need a permit for burning in trash barrels. However, law requires that you have a 1/2 inch mesh cover on your barrel at the time of burning. You do not need a permit to burn brush if there is snow on the ground. If you intend to burn a large amount of brush however, then you should report your burning to Mason City Hall ( ) so that they may contact the 911 Center. This could save an unnecessary response by the Fire Department to a report of fire at your property. 3 April 2018 Burn Permit renewals will be accepted by telephone on regular working days, from 9am to 4:30pm only. Burning permits are free to township residents. You must renew your permit each year. To renew a burn permit, you must speak with someone. Leaving a message at the City of Mason or the Fire Department does not renew your permit. If you leave a message and the Fire Department arrives at your home, you may be billed for the call. The renewal will be valid four days per renewal during the calendar year. RECREATIONAL FIRES/ CAMPFIRES There is no permit required for a recreational fire. Recreational fires are allowed under the following conditions: Recreational Fires are defined as the burning of charcoal, seasoned firewood or other fuel approved by the fire chief, where the fuel being burned is contained within a device or pit. Recreational fires cannot be located within 15 feet of a structure, nor within 15 feet of an existing property line. Recreational fires shall not exceed 36 inches in diameter and the flame height shall not exceed 24 inches from the ground surrounding the device or pit. Recreational fires are permitted only on property used and occupied as a single-family dwelling. Recreational fire burning shall not take place between the hours of 12:00 midnight and 7:00 a.m. Fires must be attended at all times and extinguishing equipment must be nearby. All burning is prohibited if the wind velocity is 10 mph or greater. If you have any questions, please call the Township Offices at Thank you, and be safe.

6 Aurelius Township Friends of Aurelius Library Book Sale If you missed our book sale in April, we will also be having one June 13, August 22, and during the December Christmas party. We will accept donations of books for one week before the sale. Please no encyclopedias, reader s digest books or magazines. The Aurelius Friends is a group of volunteers who are interested in assisting the CADL Aurelius branch library with its programs and activities. In the past we have donated funds to the summer reading program, storytime supplies and Christmas Party Santa. Our volunteers are important to us and we appreciate all that they do for the library every year. Last year one of our members, who grows dahlias, donated his flowers to us. We sold them during the summer at the library. For a donation, library patrons could take home a bouquet of beautiful flowers. All of the funds donated from the flower and book sales go back into the local library programs. If you enjoy using the Aurelius Library and want to help support it, please consider joining the Aurelius Friends group. Cindy Hawkins President Aurelius Friends of the Library County Trails & Parks Millage Money is awarded to Aurelius Township On August 15, 2017 Aurelius Township received $21, match from the Ingham County Trails & Parks Millage (50/50 match) to put towards resurfacing the Glenna Droscha Community Park half mile walking trail and parking lot. The Glenna Droscha Park walking trail and parking lot were resurfaced shortly thereafter, and they look great! Come and see for yourself! On August 31, 2017 Aurelius Township completed another County Trails & Parks Millage application for a small grant to fund the updating of the Aurelius Township 5-Year Parks & Recreation Plan. This 5-year Recreation Plan will consider recreation projects, improvements, county-wide trail planning, development and connectivity throughout the township linking with adjacent communities in the County, including both on-road and separated trails in the Ingham County Trails & Parks Regional Network. The Township is waiting for approval by the Ingham County Board of Commissioners for this latest T & P Millage application. Thanks to everyone who completed the 2017 Aurelius Township Parks & Recreation Survey. This gives the Township Board input as to what the residents want in recreation for the township. Enjoy the nice weather when it arrives by visiting the Glenna Droscha Community Park adjacent to the township hall, and the Columbia Creek Park located on Curtice road between Gale and Waverly roads. 6
7 April 2018 Celebrating 20 Years of CADL! Many people think of the library as a place where people go to check out books. Even though we still loan books of all kinds, our library is so much more! This year, as we celebrate 20 years of Capital Area District Libraries, why not check out the Aurelius branch library for yourself, or try one of our new services? Here are a few ideas to get you started: 1. Sign up for a library card. You can even register online at cadl.org/card! 2. Use our free Ancestry.com database to research your family history. 3. Stop by and take a walk on our StoryWalk in Glenna Droscha Park. It will re-open in May with brand new titles for the year. 4. Bring your toddler to a library storytime on Wednesday mornings at 10:30 a.m. 5. Bring a child to the library to get a library card, check out a book, or attend one of our STEM Science programs. 6. Borrow free movies and television programs at the library or through our free hoopla or kanopy digital services, instead of paying for subscription services. 7. Try our free RB Digital magazine service the issues are yours to download and keep. 8. Join with others in our community to read the Capital Area Reads title Behold the Dreamers, by Imbolo Mbue. We will discuss this title at our book discussion meeting on Monday, April 23 at 5:30 p.m. All are welcome! 9. Borrow an item from our Library of Things metal detectors, Wi-Fi hotspots, lawn games, sewing machines, thermal leak detectors, button makers, and so much more! Check out cadl.org/things. 10. Download a title from our digital collection to your computer or digital device. Find directions at cadl.org/downloads, or bring your device to the library for personalized help.
