2 INGHAM COUNTY HISTORICAL COMMISSION MINUTES FOR JANUARY 7, 2004 Members Present: Guests: Others Present: Dace Koenigsknecht, Randy Gladstone, Scott Shattuck, Loren Shattuck, Albert Schulien, Geoffrey Ehnis-Clark Becky Bennett Vice-Chairman L. Shattuck called the Historical Commission meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. in the 1 st floor Conference Room at the Ingham County Courthouse, Mason. A quorum was present. Upon review of the proposed minutes of the December 3, 2003 meeting, no corrections were noted. MOVED BY A. SCHULIEN, SUPPORTED BY S. SHATTUCK, THAT THE MINUTES OF THE DECEMBER 3, 2003 BE ACCEPTED AS SUBMITTED. MOTION CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY. Additions to Agenda: #3: Museum Collections #4: Whitford Donation Limited Public Comment: 1) Horse Trough Update: Vice-Chairman L. Shattuck noted that while there is nothing to report at this time, additional information is expected soon. 2) Centennial Subcommittee Report Vice-Chairman L. Shattuck distributed the updated agenda / event list prepared by Chairman Whitford for comment. R. Gladstone noted the requirement to prepare an accurate budge for the event; L. Shattuck noted the difficulty in establishing firm numbers for the varied needs this far in advance. L. Shattuck asked that each Member review the list with an eye toward establishing budget projections at the next Committee meeting. R. Gladstone queried establishing which items the County already owns. G. Ehnis-Clark suggested developing a second list of the specific needs carrying out each line item from the agenda / event list. S. Shattuck noted that the next Committee meeting is scheduled for February 4, 2004, and suggested a special work session at 6 p.m. that day to address the budget issues. 3) Museum Collection: R. Gladstone distributed copies of a print-out of the Ingham County-related holdings of the Clarke Library at Central Michigan University, and proposed seeking out items for the Centennial from other area museums and libraries. R. Gladstone also suggested the Committee work to find out what Ingham County material is in general available in area archives and museums. Member discussion noted the varied accessibility of area museums. 4) Whitford Donation: Chairman Whitford has donated to the Ingham County Courthouse an original letter dated May 3, 1830, signed by Samuel D. Ingham, our county's namesake, and directed to the President of the U.S. Bank. Member discussion queried the mechanics of framing and mounting the letter in the Courthouse for public display. Discussion as to the particulars of the framing and display location

3 were tabled until the next meeting; Becky will store the document in the interim. MOVED BY R. GLADSTONE TO ACCEPT THE GENEROUS GIFT FROM CHAIRMAN WHITFORD AND OFFER C. WHITFORD THE THANKS OF THE COMMITTEE, SUPPORTED BY S. SHATTUCK. MOTION CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY. Announcements: L. Shattuck distributed copies of a Lansing State Journal article, provided by Chairman Whtiford, regarding the Wagner book; R. Gladstone noted another article from the State Journal edition of date of this meeting that discussed the celebration regarding our State Capitol; R. Gladstone noted the availability of an 88-seat auditorium for speakers or showings at the museum in Mason, and noted the good progress made in recording the stories of local veterans. The next Commission meeting will be held February 4, 2004, with a Centennial Subcommittee meeting at 6:00 p.m. Public Comment: MOTION TO ADJOURN MADE BY S. SHATTUCK, SUPPORTED BY A. SCHULIEN.
