1 Mason-Dixon Wings MAY NEWSLETTER 2015 Greetings from our Chapter Director Cathy Kelley The riding season has finally opened up in Maryland. I do believe we see a good bit (I didn t say a lot) of sun these days and the flowers, trees and shrubs are looking pretty. A lot of you folks have already been out on the roads every chance you get. That s one of the reasons I highly recommend you participate in the Parking Lot Practice that Rodney is hosting on May 9 from at the parking lot between the Flagship Cinemas and Gardner s Furniture located at the Campus Hills Shopping Center, Churchville. This will give you an opportunity to practice those swerves and turns and the quick stops you might need soon. What is the saying? Practice makes perfect. It can only help. In April we had some cancellations which unfortunately seemed to plague us this year. Judy s Ladies Planning Get-Together was cancelled with the idea that things could be discussed at the Ice Cream Ride the next evening, but there was a low turn-out for that. It was decided that both gentlemen and ladies would do the ride to the Yuengling Brewery and Cabela s, but that too was cancelled due to lack of interest. Are we losing interest in our group rides? I sure hope not. I know I m not one to cast aspersions since we don t even have a bike anymore, but I know how much fun we can have on the road together and that was demonstrated by how many showed up for the ride to the Gap PA Ham & Oyster Feast on April 18. There were 16 bikes that day and it was a great sight to see in the Royal Farms parking lot and as you all got on the road! There are pictures later in this newsletter. MD-H Chapter Meeting 4 th Sunday at Golden Corral, 706 S. Philadelphia Blvd., Aberdeen, MD Breakfast at 0800; Meeting at 0900

He will let us know when it is planned for next year so we can put it on our calendar. We have several new members to the chapter this year. We want to welcome Ron Haslbeck and his wife Edna, and Don & Sandy Morris and encourage them to get the most out of GWRRA and Chapter H. As the weather turns warmer and riding increases, it seems important to share some helpful tips to incorporate whenever you might be involved with planning a team ride or participating in a ride. Of all the things that will be pointed out below for consideration, communication is arguably the most important. Communication is critical at the start of the ride and it remains critically important all throughout the ride. Everyone regardless of your position in the ride, has an important role and will need to do their part to help ensure the ride is safe and fun. The information provided below is an extract from the Team Riding Manual published by GWRRA. BEFORE THE TEAM RIDE BEGINS 1. Every rider should start the ride with a full fuel tank. Most Gold Wings burn fuel at approximately the same rate, however, plan fuel stops which will allow a comfortable margin for bikes that may get lower fuel mileage (such as sidecar rigs, trikes, or bikes pulling trailers). If smaller bikes with less fuel capacity are included in the group, fuel stops must be planned within their comfortable travel ranges. 2. Everyone should take a minute and check their machines for proper operating conditions. Better still, use the MSF list also referred to as a TCLOC to help you make sure your bike is in peak riding condition. If your team has a Safety Specialist or MSF instructor, perhaps this individual can help perform the safety and equipment checks with everyone. Sometimes it is helpful for another person to look over your motorcycle. They may catch something that you missed. It is not uncommon that someone else will find unsafe conditions that you may have overlooked. 3. Everyone should carry essential tools, spares, equipment, and a first aid kit. You should also consider special weather conditions and pack accordingly. Carry water when riding in the hot summer. Carry rain gear for inclement weather that may pop up. Carry warmer gear for colder riding conditions. Being dressed comfortably will make for a more enjoyable and safer trip. 4. Memorize the Group Riding Hand Signals. Group Riding Hand Signals are universal and assist those riders whose bikes are not equipped with a CB radio. It s important for co-riders to learn these hand signals as well since they function as part of the team too. 5. All riders and co-riders should study the route map so all will know where the group is going. Ask questions if anything is unclear. 6. Riders and co-riders should know the ride schedule, be on time, fueled up, and ready to go! EMERGENCIES If an accident or emergency should occur, consider all options and priorities. First, secure the accident site making certain to provide as safe an environment as possible for those attending to the accident scene. Then treat the injured. Attempt to contact help by CB, cellular phone, pay phone, or send someone for help. Stay with the injured. If no one is hurt, try to clear the roadway, and make sure everyone knows what is going on. Additionally, on an accident scene, someone should monitor oncoming traffic in both directions. Every team should work out in advance, a procedural plan to be followed in case of an emergency. If someone disappears from a formation, gets injured or sick, the entire team may choose (depending upon their Plan for Emergency ) to continue to an appropriate place then stop and wait until that rider and bike is taken care of. The Drag will stop with the bike in trouble and communicate with the Lead. CONSIDERATION Finally, an important part of any team ride is consideration. Have consideration for all members of all teams. Always give consideration to the other vehicles on the road. Even more important, have consideration for your own safety and the team. Have consideration for your own capabilities, skills, health, physical fitness, and feelings. Never drive beyond your comfort level! 5 Greetings from our Assistant Chapter Directors Judy and Shane Patishnock April has been a very busy month with lots of chapter events going on and it was really good to see a lot of members participating in the various events! This month we received quite a few articles from our members about the various bike events in which they participated so take a couple minutes to read what our chapter members had to say and see their pictures too. Unfortunately due to lack of interest Shane s Yuengling Ride was cancelled in April. However the ride is being offered again on 16 May but will not include Cabela s. Let him know if you are interested in going. Since the Yuengling ride was cancelled, Mike Haslup offered to lead a ride so Glenda, Barbie, and I rode with him up Rte. 222 into and around lower PA with a final stop at St. Mary's Church in Pylesville, MD for their chicken dinner. On the way back, we stopped at the Fiore Winery & Distillery to check it out, but weren t able to take their tour. It was a great ride, the food was delicious, and it was good company. Thanks Mike! May also has quite a few fun activities coming up so looking forward to seeing more members out on their bikes. If you set up a ride or attend another bike function, please write a short article and include some pictures we d love to hear from you and share your fun times in our monthly newsletter! Don t forget check out the Upc oming May Activities and Save the Dates! Watch for future s with more details to follow regarding upcoming activities Hope to see you at May s chapter activities! Ride safe and keep the shiny side up! News Flash! News Flash! News Flash! News Flash! Gold-n-Wing Update Gold-n-Wing have been residing at the Patishnock s residence over the Winter months actually they were buried in all the snow! For a while it was touch and go as we really didn t know if they would be able to survive Ol Man Winter since Wing only had one leg! But they made it and since Spring has sprung, they have flown the coop (so to speak) and landed in the Nagels yard. Stay tuned for more of Gold-n-Wing s upcoming adventures!

Greetings from our Chapter Member Pete Surette, U.S. Army Retired Decoration (Memorial) Day What will you be doing at 3pm local time on Memorial Day? Do you know what it means? Recently several members of CH H made a weekend visit to our nation s capital and part of that visit included Arlington National Cemetery. The emotion you feel when visiting is at once both somber and humbling when you think of all the brave men and woman interned there. As a veteran you can t help but feel a kinship. Three years after the Civil War ended, on May 5, 1868, the head of an organization of Union veterans the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) established Decoration Day as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers. Maj. Gen. John A. Logan declared that Decoration Day should be observed on May 30. It is believed that date was chosen because flowers would be in bloom all over the country. By the end of the 19th century, Memorial Day ceremonies were being held on May 30 throughout the nation. State legislatures passed proclamations designating the day, and the Army and Navy adopted regulations for proper observance at their facilities. It was not until after World War I, however, that the day was expanded to honor those who have died in all American wars. In 1971, Memorial Day was declared a national holiday by an act of Congress, though it is still often called Decoration Day. It was then also placed on the last Monday in May, as were some other federal holidays.

7 To ensure the sacrifices of America s fallen heroes are never forgotten, in December 2000, the U.S. Congress passed and the president signed into law The National Moment of Remembrance Act, P.L , creating the White House Commission on the National Moment of Remembrance. The commission s charter is to encourage the people of the United States to give something back to their country, which provides them so much freedom and opportunity by encouraging and coordinating commemorations in the United States of Memorial Day and the National Moment of Remembrance. The National Moment of Remembrance encourages all Americans to pause wherever they are at 3 p.m. local time on Memorial Day for a minute of silence to remember and honor those who have died in service to the nation. It s a way we can all help put the memorial back in Memorial Day. So when you are out and about enjoying your holiday remember to thank a vet, for it is them that this day is truly dedicated to. Greetings from our Chapter Member Alice Surette The Hallelujah Girls A CH-H Dinner Theater Adventure Nineteen members of the Chapter H family gathered at the Rainbow Comedy Playhouse on April 12 th for an afternoon of food, fun, and laughter. After eating until we couldn t eat any more we were entertained by The Hallelujah Girls production which followed a group of gals who were short on cash but long on friendship as they turned a vacant church into a hysterical health and beauty emporium. The players did an excellent job keeping us entertained and providing many opportunities for us to laugh was their main objective. If you like to laugh and like to eat then you may want to check out the Rainbow Comedy Playhouse in PA as they provide both for a reasonable price. Greetings from our Chapter Member Shane Patishnock, U.S. Army Retired Ham & Oyster Dinner Ride, Gap, PA This ride was almost like old times! On Saturday, 18 Apr, I led 19 riders on 14 bikes as well as 2 members who were on 4-wheels to the Gap Fire Hall. The ride was good, the food was good and plentiful, and the camaraderie among the attendees was good! Kudos to one of our newer CH-H members, Ron Haslbeck, who brought several of his family members along on the ride. Unfortunately Judy and I had to leave to attend to some family business so we weren t able to ride back with the group. Thanks goes to Chris Nagel who took over for me and led the riders back and I was told that it was a good ride home! (Anyone notice the theme here good ride, good food, good camaraderie!)

8 Greetings from our Chapter Member Kevin Paul Solomon s Island and Ride for Life Rides Ride to Solomon s Island, 11 Apr. It was a great day to ride. We had seven bikes and nine people who went. From Chapter H, we had Chris Nagel, Glenda Milford, Harry Martin, my wife, Carol, and myself. Other riders included Scott, Jim, Ruth, and Eric. We all met at my house and left from there. We went to Rte. 3, 301 to Rte. 4, and this took us to Solomon s Island. We found a nice place to eat, where we sat outside on the deck right next to the water. Afterwards we walked around, looked at the shops, and then headed home. Ride for Life on 18 Apr. This was a great ride to do. It was for abused kids. The weather was good and the riders and bikes showed up. I went on the ride there were over 200 bikes. It was a 55-mile ride through Baltimore and was non-stop; there was a police escort for the ride. The line of bikes on this ride was about two miles long. There were all kinds of bikes and bike groups participating in this ride. There were also vendors set up and selling food. Greetings from our Chapter Member Rick Brown, U.S. Army Retired Chapter H Membership Just a little note to let everyone know that we have two new active members registered as of April If you could please take a moment and drop them an and welcome them to our wild and wonderful Mason-Dixon Wings! I m sure they would appreciate hearing from all of you. Donnie Morris, don.morris@earthlink.net Ron Haslbeck, ron.haslbeck@comcast.net And a reminder to always stay diligent in speaking with the occasional rider(s) who may attend our events with members or simply show up by word of mouth. We like new members and not only enjoy the opportunities to present our chapter good cheer but to have them along for the ride as well. Along the lines of good cheer, this coming January will be Cathy s and my 10th anniversary in Chapter H. Yes, we re just babies! They say time flies when you re having fun. Well, we must have had a hell of a time because it seems like yesterday that we walked in. It has been nothing short of cheer ever since and the membership is family to us. Thanks to all of you in Chapter H for making our 10 years cheery! We hope we have been able to give you some smiles right back atcha as well. We are looking for quite a few more years so don t change anything (except maybe a few more chapter paid ice creams I like those!)

9 Greetings from our Chapter Member Fran Haslup, CH-H Treasurer Volunteer Recognition On April 17, 2015 six Maryland Chapter H members were recognized at the Annual Volunteer Recognition Luncheon for their service to the residents of the Bel Air Health and Rehab Center. Mike and Fran Haslup, Shane and Judy Patishnock, and Chris and Marge Nagel attended the luncheon held at the Bayou Restaurant in Havre de Grace. Bill and Sue Jacobs and Barb Aspinall were also invited but were unable to attend. Members of Chapter H served dinner to the residents at their Valentine s Day Dinner and delivered Christmas presents in the wee hours of the morning on Christmas Day. Greetings from our Chapter Member Donnie Morris Capturing a Whispering Giant or Two On the road to capture a Whispering Giant or two with an Idaho potato thrown in. The day dawned bright and cheerful at the crack of noon. Ah ha I said to myself, Self, let s go capture those pesky Whispering Giants. So I grabbed my helmet and other battle gear, called to my faithful serf to grab the same and we mounted our trusty iron horse and hit the pavement. And (four letter expletive deleted), was it hard. The first task of course was to program the GPS, a menial task for a 4 year old, but a battle royale for an aging adult. Note to self, next time borrow a 4 year old. So after sticking keys and misspelling galore we finally got the Nanticoke Indian Museum programmed into the electron map. Didn t give the directions much thought til we were heading for sunny California when I seemed to remember that the museum was in Milford, Delaware. Now, not believing that a man-made device could be wrong, we followed the directions for about 200 yds. Then ALL STOP! and reprogrammed, guess that 2 hours seemed much better than 2 days for an afternoon ride. And with this off we went. If you read about Peter Turk and his statues you get the sense that the original statue gave up the ghost a few years ago, but that pieces of it could still be held at the museum. So trying for a coup and bonus points for finding a giant others would not we got to the museum, but lo and behold, it was no longer there. In its place was the Nanticoke Indian Center (should be good for a 5-point bonus anyway) so brought out the camera and the flag and snap, snap, snap. If one picture is worth a thousand words then lots of pictures of the same sign should be worth at least two or three! Now in a deflated state we programmed the GPS (where is that 4 year old?) and off we set for Bethany Beach and the statute of Little Owl, Chief of the Nanticoke. Then what to my wandering eyes did appear but a new building housing the lost museum. So I hit the brakes hard, leaned fully over to the right and came to a grinding halt. With visions of pieces of the original Little Owl, we walked to the door, but it was locked. Seems like that the Native Americans have grown tired of the white man stealing everything so they now only open the door when you ring the bell. So happily we rang the bell, was ushered in and paid our $3.00 each to get our tour.

10 After 40 minutes later with no pieces of Little Owl in sight, we asked where lies the remains? Only to be told that (after all the elation), alas, there no longer existed any, not even the most tiny, remain of Little Owl the first. Dejectedly, but with newly amassed knowledge and a delightful experience, we left the museum and headed for the iron horse drinking pool (the Valero station across the road) to water the beast and give it strength to carry us on to Bethany and beyond! Sometime later we arrived at 2nd and Baltimore in Bethany and gazed upon Chief Little Owl the third, seems like Little Owl the second, also succumbed to cancer of the wood, and was thus replaced once again, this time by Mr. Tork. Seemed that the best place to take a picture was from the middle of the road, so relying on training received in the orient, it was car dodging time. Several pictures later (put GPS coordinates here), we again mounted our steed, programmed the GPS and set off for Ocean City, MD and Whispering Giant #2. We searched in vain for any plaque, or other adornment that would need to be photographed. As we arrived in the beautiful tourist trap of Ocean City, we decided that it was time to water and feed ourselves as we had the steed those many miles back, so the quest became one of a watering hole rather than a Giant. We found the Bull on the Beach and proceeded to shoot the bull and toast the carcass. Now feeling much more steadfast, we set off for South 2nd and Baltimore and Whispering Giant #2. Well, did I mention an Idaho potato? On the way we found the Ocean City Post Office and the O required. Pictures were taken here, then we were away again. We found the second Giant, standing stately, looking forlornly at a closed motel, but a photo he didn t agree to, and so we proceeded to shoot several, including a few of a plaque discussing the Maryland Indian Nations. We had now completed our quest for tis the first nice day of Spring and with light hearts and aching butts, we mounted up for the ride home. The next day thinking we had a goodly number of points collected, we smugly downloaded the pictures, but then I noticed the file dates the date programmed into the camera was off by a year, a day, and a few hours. Sadness set in, to think we would need to retrace our steps again before or after the summer was over (not going near either place during tourist season) to take more photos. But then the ride was nice and the food and adult beverages were good, so I guess it will be OK. We found that the cellphone takes better pictures than the camera. Oh well. Guess we ll use the cellphone from now on as it tags the pictures with a location and address, mucho niceo if you re trying to prove you were in a certain place at a certain time. Ending trip mileage was 6,972.
