In Somerset County you ll find quaint communities home to charming shops and eateries. Our scenic byways traverse pastoral settings and the rolling hillsides of southwestern Pennsylvania, past the state s highest point, Mt. Davis, and alongside pristine streams and lakeshores. Outdoor recreation abounds in this four-season destination. In winter, visitors are drawn to three first-class ski resorts and miles of cross-country trails. Those who prefer warm-weather activities flock to our state parks, biking and hiking trails, and waterways. Somerset County is steeped in history, from the onset of the French & Indian War and the days of early frontiersmen to modern-day events like the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and the Quecreek mine rescue. Ten covered bridges still stand across the county, serving as a symbol of times gone by, and our Amish communities offer a glimpse into a simpler way of life. There is always something to celebrate in Somerset County, and our unique fairs and festivals pay tribute to the region s heritage, changing seasons and the arts throughout the year. 4 4 SomersetPa.net Attractions & Historical Sites Much like western Pennsylvania, Somerset County is steeped in history. The region s roots can be traced more than 250 years to when military expeditions from two global empires carved roads through the wilderness and fought for supremacy in the French & Indian War. Early settlers laid the foundation for settlement in Somerset County in the late 1700s, and today several local museums pay tribute to those hardy folks as well as the region s rich agriculture and mining heritage. The county s 10 covered bridges, unique barn architecture and two historic highways also harken times past. Somerset County is no stranger to modern-day history as it s the site of both the United Airlines Flight 93 crash on September 11, 2001, and the 77-hour Quecreek mine rescue in July Philip Dressler Center for the Arts The region s culture and heritage, along with the arts and changing seasons, are also celebrated annually through a full slate of fairs and festivals. Cultural events have their place in Somerset County, too. The area boasts several small theaters, playhouses and event spaces that offer everything from major productions to concerts and small-scale performances. Several art galleries showcase the talents of regional artists, and many may be surprised to learn Somerset is home to the National Museum of the Guild of American Papercutters. Sports entertainment is available, too, at the historic Jennerstown Speedway Complex, and two minor league sports teams call this region home.

14 Outdoor Recreation Somerset County is the ultimate outdoor playground, no matter the season and no matter the age. Recreation is our quality of life, and there is something for everyone all year long. Hundreds of thousands of bicyclists are drawn annually to the Great Allegheny Passage, part of the 334-mile railsto-trails project connecting Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C., and named by National Geographic s travel editors as one of the top 10 places in the world to visit in the fall. Skiing, snowboarding and other winter activities thrive at three of the top resorts in the eastern U.S., Hidden Valley Resort, Seven Springs Mountain Resort and Laurel Mountain Ski Resort, the latter of which features the highest vertical drop in Pennsylvania. There are also cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling trails throughout the county. Whitewater rafting and kayaking have a strong presence in the area, including on the Stonycreek River, Pennsylvania s 2012 River of the Year. The county also offers a multitude of mountain bike trails from easy to expert. Fishing, hunting, boating, bird watching, geocaching and camping are also popular pastimes and ways to unwind. Sporting clays has become a destination sport, as Somerset County now offers three unique and nationally acclaimed shooting sites. Others enjoy hiking along the Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail and the Great Allegheny Passage. Area state parks offer numerous activities and recreational opportunities as well as comfortable cabins and pavilions for rent. Teeing it up in Somerset County is easy with everything from nine-hole community courses to PGA-rated resort courses. 18 Shopping & Dining Shopping in Somerset County is like a tour back in time when shopping was still about the quality of the products and personal, friendly service. The area features a vast array of specialty shops offering unique, one-of-a-kind merchandise or that perfect treasure alongside traditional items. Locally handcrafted goods and products are flourishing and are available at locations throughout the county. Antiques shopping lures visitors to the region, including for the annual Somerset Antique Show, held the second Saturday of August on the streets of uptown Somerset each year. Somerset County has a long, proud tradition of producing high-quality products. The county still continues that tradition with a large number of local craftspeople who make items that are perfect for even the most discriminating tastes. The growing market in the county is the ever-increasing number of farmers and growers who are offering an array of fresh produce and other agricultural products.
