In this issue we have coverage of the big NTRAK Layout in Detroit. Lee and I weren t able to get away for a trip east at that time. Dave Porter was able to be there and has sent photos for our Newsletter convention coverage. I depend on others for much of the material in the Newsletter, so if you have photos, an article related to N modeling or a story about your club or modeling experience, please get in touch and I can work with you on how best to send your material. As I write this in mid August, we still have about 15 of the NTRAK Ghost Train cars available. Check our web site order page and see if they have sold out by the time you read this. Thanks to those who ordered cars. Ken Peck One of the NTRAK Pioneers died May 29th. Ken had a key part in the 2nd big NTRAK layout at Dayton Ohio NMRA National Convention in Ken was an architect and did all the pen and ink drawings for the NTRAK Manual that we are still using, He also created the NTRAK Steam Engine Logo that we are all familiar with. Ken was a founding member of the Detroit SONS club and the Bluewater NTRAK club in his hometown of Port Huron, MI. The club has members in Sarnia, Ont., so is a truly International NTRAK Club. Our sympathies to Kay and their family. N SCALE MODULAR RAILROADING NTRAK, Inc Officers & Directors General questions and Newsletter material. 4 Preproduction Kato SP Daylight GS-4 A preproduction model of the Kato SP Daylight GS-4 engine was on display at the Detroit National Train Show. Dave Porter took this photo. The engine is expected in November and has a detailed cab interior, simulated rotating Mars light, full engine and tender pickup, is DCC friendly and is priced at $198. In December a 10 car passenger train set will be introduced. This includes a 3 car articulated Coffee Shop, Kitchen and Dinner set. Special diaphragms are used between the articulated cars. Also in December a two unit articulated Chair Car will be released. This will be followed in January with two more Chair Car sets, with different car numbers. The N Scale Architect New Haven RR 1870 Depot Privy A laser cut wood kit of a Depot on the New Haven RR in Cranston, Rhode Island has been released by Russ Kaufman, The N Scale Architect. The depot was built in 1870 and retired in The building was removed in It still had a Privy and oil Page 4 lamps were used into the 30 s, so the building may never have had sewer or electricity. 5 Modern Passenger Terminal Built by Ken Peck Long time Ntraker, Ken Peck passed on in late May. (See page 2). At the 1978 NMRA Convention in Dearborn, Mi, Ken showed this modern passenger terminal as part of the big NTRAK layout. His Detroit club, the SONS, contributed the majority of the modules for that layout. The terminal was at one end of their 54 long yard. It was estimated that the yard would hold 1,000 cars. Nine tracks are under the stub terminal, The office part of the complex has 18 floors, The light colored bar in one window section is a window washer s platform that included two busy workers. An Amtrak ticket counter was featured on the detailed ground floor. Page 5

Edited by Tom Knapp Nn3 can be incorporated into existing N scale layouts, planned as part of a standard gauge layout, exist as an Nn3-only module or as part of an NTRAK module, or for an independent, stand-alone layout. The later can either be in a fixed home layout, or as a portable layout which can be shared with others at model railway exhibitions. One of the nicest Nn3 versions of the latter is the layout by Paul Sturtz. This simple dog-bone layout is an artistic diorama that is the proof of the saying less is more. Paul has spaced structures and details in a prototypical way that while each scene is minutely and expertly detailed still achieves a balance between detail and real-world openness (if there is such a word). Paul has provided the following pictures and captions to describe his effort, and the following intro: Paul is retired and lives in Albuquerque with his wife Patty. His son is an avid On30 modeler, but we won t hold that against him. He shares my interest in motorcycles and cars and as he says too many interests, not enough time or money, a common refrain. Photos and text by Paul Sturtz. This is a solo effort, not originally planned for shows but it just worked out that way. The first photo shows the layout in it's usual place above my workbench but because it was impossible to work on it up there, it became portable. It is basically a 7 foot long diorama depicting a rural town in the Colorado mountains. There is a three track staging yard behind the backdrop to hide trains and I usually set up four trains at once and run them one at a time. One of the photos shows the layout as set up in Santa Fe. It now sits much higher and has it's own lighting. The layout is 7' x 2' x 3" thick (except for built-up scenery), weighs 26 lbs soaking wet. The track plan is a simple oval with the back half hidden behind the backdrop. All controls are modular, i.e. a block control panel plugs into the layout 10-pin connector and into a modified Kato power supply. Despite my terrible track laying, it runs very dependably, rarely needs track cleaning (aside from my track cleaning train), have NEVER in two years had to clean a Lok-14 loco, but the Aspen K-28 occasionally requires it. I try to stick strictly to D&GRW/RGS prototype equipment if available, but have bashed several cars (Conoco tanks, reefers, spreader, work cars, etc). The layout can be operated (as in operation) and I have done so, but after a while it becomes repetitious. I built it to test/ display Nn3 models and fool around with scenery techniques. That still goes, but now it can be shown to the public at large, something not originally contemplated. It has been abuilding for about 2 1/2 years, constantly changing things, losing direction and leaving it for months then coming back to it as ideas flowed. It is made of foam sheets entirely, no wood at all. I have a light weight aluminum framework that it can sit on when necessary. It is very light and easy to handle. All wiring is buried inside the foam and exits at the right side in a ten pin connector. Marklin turnouts are used on the visible part because that was all that were available at the time. The staging yard is made up from MicroTrains new turnouts and track and works very well. The backdrop is Detail Assoc. HO mountains glued to poster board and cut out. In front of the mountains are N-Scale backdrops from the same source. In some places, I have used 3 and 4 layers to create depth and transitions. A temporary sky back drop is used for shows. A permanent sky back drop is installed on the wall above the workbench. Page 6 The layout sits above a workbench and, on the wall above it, is a wide view auto mirror with a view of the staging yard.

At the left hand end of the layout is a grouping of RR structures plus a standard gauge spur serving the modified Showcase warehouse. The tank is Dimi Trains with scratch support structure. The track crosses the highway on a modified Monroe concrete bridge, past a pond, curves through a cut lined with rock castings and disappears through a much bashed/scratch highway bridge. The standard/n3 crossing is a dummy. Along the highway is a very old, modified Chooch coal dealer I had for 25 years, now serving as a boarded up pool hall. Below are other buildings along the highway. Page 7

The right hand end of the layout features the track exiting from the backdrop via a tunnel, crossing a bashed built-in-place trestle made from parts of 3 kits plus scratch. The road is Scuptamold with a thin layer of joint compound sanded smooth, covered with Woodland Scenics colors. Second trestle is Blair Line curved kit. Some of the business' and residents along the road. All are modified kits (very little if anything on the layout is stock, that is, I modify almost everything) from Paper Creek, Grandt Line, LaserKit, Bar Mills, etc. The depot is Paper Creek also. Houses are modified Branchline Trains and LaserKit. Page 8

OklahomaCity N Convention NtrakOK, the 13th Annual Southern Plain N Scale Convention and the Oklahoma City Train Show being held November 29th through Sunday, December 2nd, 2007 The thirteenth NtrakOK starts on Thursday, November 29th, with a trip to Enid to visit the Railroad Museum of Oklahoma, then travel to Guthrie, the first capital of Oklahoma for lunch at the Old Santa Fe Depot, which is situated right next to the busy BNSF main running between Kansas and Texas followed by a tour of the Model Train and Automobile Museum, also in Guthrie. When we return to the convention hotel, we have three clinics scheduled for the afternoon, each about one hour in length. One new addition is scheduling a room for the evening, allowing people a place to set up exhibits, or just put out items for sale or swap. Friday morning is show setup, but our guests will be able to travel down to Norman and see the old Santa Fe station in that town. In the afternoon, we start setting up the big Ntrak layout, which occupies an area that is 100 by 60 feet in size. We usually try to reserve table space for T-TRAK modules and our white elephant sale. This provides attendees with the opportunity to bring items to the show and sell them without having to reserve a booth. The Oklahoma City Train Show starts Saturday morning at 9 am at the Oklahoma State Fairgrounds in the Transportation Building. Attendance usually tops 12,000 attendees over the two days. The show has layouts in all scales, and vendors from as far away as New Hampshire. Items for sale range from Z scale to tinplate to memorabilia, to sound recording, books and everything in between. After the show closes on Saturday, we will be going back to the convention hotel, and having our annual banquet. Last year, Bobeye Hall was our guest speaker. This year's speaker has not been an- Photo furnished by Bruce Alcock nounced, yet. Our master of ceremonies is Mr. Richard Fisher and we try to have a door prize for everyone. Sunday morning starts off with a pancake breakfast for conventioneers, dealers and other exhibitors that is a show tradition. Doors open at 11 am and the show runs until 5 pm. We don't charge a registration fee for attendees who bring a module or are members of a club that brings modules. However, we do require that everyone register and this has become even more important for running DCC. In the past, we have been able to let people run their engines as they program them and there have been only a few conflicts. As the number of people running DCC grows and as people increase the size of their DCC fleets, it is now becoming necessary to start assigning numbers, and we are giving out registration numbers that can be used for the advanced consisting address. We will also be giving out extra blocks of 25 numbers for those who request them. Our convention hotel is the Clarion, which is located only a few miles from the Fair Grounds where the Train Show is held. There is a train show rate of $62 per night which can be guaranteed by calling Reservations must be made before November 14th. To register, just visit the Oklahoma N-Rail web site at oknrail.org and click on the convention link. If you need more information, you can send mail to convention@oknrail.org or call We do request that registration be completed by November 23rd. We look forward to seeing you. Page 9

By Mark Cowles The Detroit National Train Show NTRAK layout. We had just under one hundred modules set up in a four pronged layout. DCC was set up on the entire Red Line and on the Yellow and Blue lines of one loop. The Yellow and Blue lines of the other loop were DC for those of us still operating heritage locomotives. The Dayton Club provided the largest number of modules. We also had modules from the Chattanooga Club, Ksons, Niagara-Orleans, NTRAK of Bloomington-Normal, Milwaukee Area NTRAK, Philadelphia NTRAK, Denver Area NTRAK, Salt City NTRAK and LaNtrak. Set up started at noon Wednesday and was completed by mid-afternoon on Thursday. Due to the tremendous help provided by the Dayton Club, things went together with a minimum of problems. We owe a great thanks to Dick Strous of Dayton for the huge amount of effort he put into designing the layout and organizing the set up. Much thanks also to Brian Rebney and Jim Lundeen of the Dayton club for designing and setting up the wiring and controls for the layout. We couldn't have done it with out all of your help. From the LaNtrak end of things, Len and Carol Vander Jagt did the bulk of the work, Len in making and maintain contacts with the Dayton Club and Carol for doing the work of registrar. We figured we had room for ten trains on the red line, and three each on each of the Yellow and Blue loops for a total of 22 trains per operating period, which we set at 90 minutes, so there was more than enough opportunity for everyone to run trains. I d set up a dispatcher board with track and time slots and everyone was provided with name cards to place on the board, thereby reserving track and time to run. They could reserve up to four future slots at a time. This seemed to work well, eliminating the need for a designated dispatcher, allowing individuals to plan running and shopping time and also to let us see when there would be a shortage of trains Dick Strous of Dayton NTRAK furnished a mining layout as well as designing the layout Page 10 and coordinating its operation. Another view of the module is at the bottom of the next page. All Detroit Layout photos by Dave Porter.

running and adjust accordingly. The Train Show was in a very large section of Cobo Hall, about the size of four football fields and with very wide aisles, so it was hard to judge the attendance in comparison to other venues, but it seemed to be well attended. We always had a large number of people viewing the layout and received numerous complements on it. Again, thanks to all of those who participated and helped in the design and set up of the layout. We are looking forward to seeing you at Louisville, if not before. Don Kriegbaum, Dayton NTRAK Presdent, coaches a visitor in the operation of his scrap yard crane. 14 Convention Comments Jim s Note: Dave Porter took the Convention photos for this article and has written some comments about the Train Show. Thanks for your help Dave. The annual NMRA sponsored National Train Show has traditionally been an event where a sizable NTRAK layout is displayed. This year was no exception. The two loop layout with 97 modules came from 11 states and from as far away as Idaho. Lansing Area NTRAK and Dayton NTRAK were the primary event organizers, with Dayton NTRAK's Dick Strous coordinating the layout. The layout was in the center of the Cobo Exhibit hall in downtown Detroit immediately across the Detroit River from Windsor, Ontario. Above, Alan Schappel, from Philadelphia, with some fine detailed Philadelphia city scenes, including an animated amusement park, and drive in theater. An operating yard from Nashville NTRAK by Mike Curtis Operated by the switch command on the DCC throttle. Lights placed between the ties when lit red, indicated the turnout was aligned away from that track; when lit green, the turnout was aligned for that track. Page 14

The Red Line traversed both loops and was dedicated for DCC operations as was the Yellow and Blue on one of the loops. The other loop's Yellow and Blue lines were reserved for DC operations. The layout was setup on Thursday and operated for the public from Friday though Sunday. General public attendance was relatively low as National Shows go, but that didn't dampen the enthusiasm of the operators or the attending public. Some of the younger public visitors were treated to operating Dayton NTRAK member Don Kriegbaum's scrap yard crane using a tethered control. Also a hit was the camera car hidden inside of 'Boeing Fuselage' car at the end of a freight. The live display then showed an N Scale view of the scenery going away from the camera. After the show I packed my 2 junction modules into the back of my Toyota Matrix and drove the 1,280 miles back to Colorado. Who says you need a van to transport modules. Dave Porter Denver NTRAK The Dayton NTRAK club furnished this Snow scene for the big layout. The Dayton club lift up bridge gave easy access to part of the layout. The other part of the layout had a crawl under farm scene bridge module that emited a Moo when people crawled under. Page 15

Steam Book 07 Addendum Preview Last year we published the 8th printing of The N Scale Steam Locomotive Information Book, Edited by Jim Kline and Craig Barrow. The editorial pair have been busy this summer gathering more material for the book. This Fall we will be publishing an Addendum to the book with reviews of recently released N steam engines and kitbashed engines by some very talented modelers from around the world. Here is a sneak preview of five of the articles that will be in the addendum. Each includes step by step instructions on how the specialized engines were converted from production engines. Prototype steam engines were custom made for each railroad to suit their needs and to include features they favored. Modeling these engines accurately is the goal of the work shown here. Above is an Erie S-1 Berkshire modeled by Chris Schmuck. Chris modified a Life-Like model giving it the details of the Erie engines. Below, Gerd Ziller of Germany, has taken three Atlas Shays and made two, 3 truck, engines from the three. He is modeling a lumber operation that used mostly 3 truck Shay engines. At the top of the next page is a L&N Big Emma engine modeled by Paul Downs. His techniques involve modifying parts very carefully and then using that part as a master for casting enough additional parts to build a fleet of identical engines. The middle photo is a engine by Tsuguo Ebihara of Japan. He took a Micro Ace model of a Japanese engine built by Baldwin. It already has some American features and is a smooth running engine. The new pilot and front truck, new tender and trailing truck were the major changes along with some additional details. This is a could have been engine, The last photo is a B&O S-1 Big Six engine by Tony Hines. This engine was made by stretching a Kato Mikado frame to add a 5th driver. You get a great chassis in a new wheel arrangement, In the next issue I should have the publication date, price and other details of the Steam Book Addendum 07. The current Steam book has 144 pages and the Addendum will have about 40 pages of new material. Page 16

New N Scale Modeling by Lee Lee@T-TRAK.org Text by Lee except as noted. T-TRAK is growing, quite fast. In the beginning, people, including modelers and the Chief Editor here, were skeptical about this new small, original table top concept that I created. I titled the System- T-TRAK with the Slogan, Trams, Trolleys, Trains, Two Track, Table Top from the very beginning. I introduced it to other nations, as well. It was voted on, at a dinner meeting, in another country, to use this title, for unity, also. Seeing 2 pieces of Kato N Solid Base Unitrack for the first time, held in the air, was my inspiration. I had worked with Solid Base track in other scales and many displays, before that. After much module building, based on the Unitrack sizes, plus promotion, people then saw the module/ modules, demo Layout and they were very interested. It is now all across this grand country, the U.S.A., and International. This PDF file and Data Sheets, can be copied for distribution, from my website. There is much to learn from my most extensive website. There are Easy Instructions to advanced information and Layout Plans, including information for this new T-TRAK-N, T-TRAK-HO, T-TRAK-Z, T-TRAK- S, T- TRAK-O System. Run your Trains/Trolleys on your T-TRAK modules, on the Table Tops, with Two Tracks, (to additional track for Sidings, Yards, plus), and Have Fun. What is T-TRAK? T-TRAK is a NEW FORM of "N" SCALE" MODELING. It is based on the Principles of NTRAK Modules and are Small Wood Bases placed on Table Tops or Shelves. Modules are Simple to build, Easily joined together with Locking Track for Electrical Power, according to Standards, like all Successful Systems, for Strength, Lasting Stability and Varying in sizes to suit your needs. An entire layout could fit in most cars for a train show or club meeting. One or two modelers can set up a display layout at a hospital-service people or children's ward, retirement or nursing home, scouts, youth groups and not to forget, your private empire, at home. A 30" wide x 6' or 8' long folding table, holds many modules. Just add tables for your club or friends. Modules are built according to T-TRAK Standards. for unity and presentation, just as the full size NTRAK~modules -- have standards, for properly built modules. The difference is the overall sizes and the height of NTRAK, on long legs and T-TRAK, placed right on tables. Use leveling bolts only if needed. Page 18

#1 Traveling, Demo Layout Designed & built by Lee. My basic, 14 + foot module layout has examples of assorted sizes in depth and width, track, scenery from deep valleys to high mountains, industry to an amusement park, ALL on one 30" x 8' long table. The Two Tracks are spaced as Basic,1 inch-(25mm), for 4 axle Trolleys, small Engines and cars. Alternate 1-5/16 -(33mm), for 6 axle longer engines and cars. The Track Spacings and Module Sizes are your choice. The sizes are not restrictive, for beginners or experienced modelers. Many clubs, in all scales, maintain a module quality check-in for National and local shows. The T-TRAK youth Program is very successful in bringing modeling to Junior Modelers, with help from caring clubs and they do very well. 12-1/8" 8-1/4" Standard T-TRAK Construction 2-3/4" BASIC MODULE Assorted sizes Sidings to yards Easy locking track for power Home, Meetings, Shows Easy Portability More! 210 mm 8-1/4" Minimum 2-3/4" 70 mm Place base directly on a table.
