New Photo Contest Chairman Troy, MI: Joel Goldberg reports that Howard Andrews is the new photo contest chairman for the North Central Region. The appointment is effective immediately. J a n u a r y 1 9, T h e N e w s News from National Troy, MI: Dave Thornton reported that the NMRA.org website has and is still experiencing some performance problems. As a result, the NMRA is looking for a new webmaster. Dave also reports the ballots for the upcoming elections will be included in the February edition of the NMRA magazine. Model of the First Quarter 2012 Troy, MI: A reminder that the model of the first quarter of 2012 will be to build a trestle. Rules: 1. Trestle model a. Can be built in any scale b. Can be built using any materials c. Must represent a real prototype (made from steel, iron, or wood) 2. Trestle model may be: a. Scratchbuilt or b. Built from a craftsman kit or c. Kitbashed 3. Minimum details required: a. Model must be painted b. Contain track appropriate to the scale modeled c. Be operational, i.e. suitable for installation on a layout and subsequent use by trains. 2 Show & Tell What RR Item I Received for Christmas or your favorite current project Ron King offered two Pennsylvania RR GP-7 Phil Doolittle brought in two items that he received for locomotives. The P Company ordered the Christmas, a Micro-Mark mini-table saw and an HO prototypes in September, 1953 with no dynamic scale NW SW-9. The locomotive is by Walthers and brakes in an order of 90 locomotives. The includes DCC with sound. locomotives are in HO scale. Walt Connell offered a pair of AS-16 s in HO scale by Bowser. One is decorated for the DSS&A and the other in Soo Line paint. Jim Zinser also brought in an HO scale AS-16 by Bowser. Jim s locomotive is decorated for the DSS&A. In addition, Jim also received a book on the Reading RR T1 locomotives Terry Bossick displayed his Christmas gifts which consisted of a Detroit Street Railway PCC car and a double drive ratchet tool. 3 Larry Wolohon s Christmas gifts this year included a book on MDT Refers and a brake wheel. Bill Gawthrop received the book, The Pennsylvania Railroad in Columbus, Ohio by Rick Tipton. Ken Sherer displayed a hand-painted and framed set of images of Grand Trunk Western locomotives which he received as a Christmas gift. Rick Ware received the book Trackside Around West Virginia, by Bob Withers. The book contains all color photographs of a number of railroads including the B&O, C&O, N&W, NYC, and short lines.. John Jackson received the 75 years of Model Railroader Magazine on DVD and 2 sets of MicroMark machinist pin vises. Jim Clements received a new railroad shirt. Page 3 of 6

The first is a self-published book on the research and construction of his 25 x44 S scale layout depicting the Buffalo Creek & Gauley Railroad as it appeared in The book consists of 106 pages with 300 photos and illustrations, in full color. Brooks also displayed the book The BC&G in Color which he co-authored with Bob Withers. This book features 240 color photos of the BC&G from John Gavasso displayed one of his Christmas gifts, #736 Berkshire (Lionel) by Hallmark. Bob Sherer received eleven HO scale NYC box cars for Christmas. The model is by Broadway Limited. Paul Runyon displayed the Hallmark ornaments that he received for Christmas. Paul has all 16 years of the Hallmark Trains ornaments which his wife has given him. Paul also received the DVD 75 Years of Model Railroader Magazine. Joel Goldberg received the book, Great American Scenic Trains. Jerry Shanek brought in a B&O lantern and Hallmark ornaments that he received as presents from his daughter and his fiancée respectively. Dave Thornton brought in a B&O F-3A, Phase II in O scale (by Atlas). The shell was made from former P&D molds. Page 4 of 6

5 Gene Kome offered a Santa Fe dome car in HO scale. This particular car is filled with passengers thank to a gift from Gene s wife. Ed Black brought in his gift, a velvet box containing a Union Pacific hand-painted ornament. Gary Brim displayed his gift, a Model Railroader 75 th Anniversary print. Sorry, I didn t get a photo of the ornament. Stu Sonta displayed his gifts, a 9-well-car set in N scale, and a snow-removal car of a Japanese prototype. Jim Sieradzinski brought in an HO scale Conrail heavy duty flat car with motor generator load and a backdrop building by Walthers-Cornerstone called Armstrong Electric also in HO scale. 6 This month s clinc, the Interstate Commerce Commission, was delivered by Lew Hoy. Lew is a long-time employee of the Pennsylvania Railroad, now retired. Lew gave a brief background of the ICC as follows. The ICC was established by the 1887 act, which was signed into law by President Grover Cleveland. The creation of the commission was the result of widespread and longstanding antirailroad agitation. The agricultural interests were the dominant force behind the unrest. A central issue was rate discrimination between similarly situated customers and communities. As time passed, the motor carriers began to displace the railroads as a choice by shippers. These motor carriers were governed under a completely different set of rules. These rules favored the motor carriers, and later the airlines. Lew offered a number of examples of the interaction of the ICC, railroads and customers. He injected his personal experiences a number of times during his presentation. Congress passed various deregulation measures in the 1970s and 1980s which diminished ICC authority, including the Railroad Revitalization and Regulatory Reform Act of The Motor Carrier Act of 1980 and the Staggers Rail Act of In 1995, when most of the ICC's powers had been eliminated, Congress finally abolished the agency and transferred its remaining functions to the Surface Transportation Board.
