November/December 2010 Must See - Jingle Rails At The Eiteljorg Museum Great American Train Show At Indy Fairgrounds Incredible Large Scale Holiday Train Exhibit On display for 9 weeks - Nov. 6 thru Jan. 9 Eiteljorg Museum; 500 W. Washington St., INDY Many of our ILSR Club members are already aware that something NEW is brewing this Holiday Season in downtown Indianapolis, and yes, IT DOES RELATE directly to something near and dear to each of our hearts. An actual large, G gauge Holiday Train Exhibit called Jingle Rails is presently being built for display in downtown Indianapolis. Eiteljorg President and CEO John Vanansdall expects close to 50,000 visitors to the Eiteljorg during the Holiday Season, and the new large scale model railroad display created by Paul Busse is expected to be a must see, engaging crowd pleaser this Winter - and in future Holiday Seasons to come. Referring to the track plan (at right), you will notice that the railroad is built on four islands with Indianapolis being the first one you will see as you enter the exhibit. Several Indy landmarks will be recognizable including replicas of the Soldiers and Sailers Monument. Seven G Scale trains will running. From Indianapolis, you can work your way to the West Coast via the Greater Southwest or the Northern Rockies. There will be active trains running within the islands themselves, as well as a train inter-connecting the four islands. Should be quite an outstanding exhibit to say the least! Each of our ILSR Club Members are encouraged to visit this Jingle Rails exhibit sometime during it s exhibit time and take family or friends with you. Such was the case when 35 ILSR Club members and guests all travelled by motor coach to Columbus, Ohio.

The Hobby Shop visit, the lunch and the friendly atmosphere at all five garden railroads we were privileged to see was truly superb!

Our 1st Stop was at G Scale Junction. This is It is said that Everyone loves the B&O the large train hobby shop serving the Columbus and one other favorite railroad. No area.

It is like a Mini-Convention in that it does not require a huge expense, no fancy hotel stays, and we can do it all in one day with friends and fellow Club members that we all know. Such was the case when 35 ILSR Club members and guests all travelled by motor coach to Columbus, Ohio. I must compliment all the members of the Columbus Garden Railway Society for all the preparation work and the hosting all the Train Clubs for this gala event. The Hobby Shop visit, the lunch and the friendly atmosphere at all five garden railroads we were privileged to see was truly superb!! Layout #1 Page 3 Part of this layout is built at ground level as this B&O Capitol Limited glides by. Part of this layout is built at waist height as Rex Bowman watches the Freedom Train steam by. Layout #2 I had this train meet timed out perfectly, when the gentleman in the hat stepped out of nowhere and refused to move. (photos below) All trains on this layout fit together well as the owner stayed true to just one major railroad - Santa Fe All The Way. The owner also demonstrated the solid construction of his steel bridge by actually crawling out to the middle of his pond while carefully balancing himself midway.

4 Page 4 Layout #3 This was a smooth running layout. The owner specialized in detailed, scratch-built buildings. Another scratch-built restaurant overlooking a waterfalls and pond. Layout #4 Lynn Denison and Rex Bowman are keeping an eye on this old time freight train. This is an overview perspective of a nicely done garden railroad surrounded by privacy fence. 5 GREAT TRAIN EXPO - Oct. 9 & 10 Page 5 Indiana State Fairgrounds - Indy Three times each year, our ILSR Modular Division gets the opportunity to showcase their amazing, creative modular G Scale railroad to the general public. (October and January at the Great Train Expo; June at the Strawberry Festival ) Of course, there is always lots of interesting railroad stuff to see at these shows. I particularly enjoy seeing all the operating modular layouts in N, HO, O and G, but I admit I m partial toward our own Club s G scale Modular Division. Here is what things looked like on Sat.P.M. 6 Page 6 ANNUAL CLUB WATTS MEETING AT TRAIN SHOP " A big THANK YOU goes out to both David Watts and Ross Buttrum for hosting our October 30 Club meeting at the Train Shop. The meeting was lots of fun as well as friendly and informative. I m not aware if David holds any degrees in engineering, but he did stay up until 4:00 A.M. Sat. morning finishing the final details of his Locomotive Pulling Weight Tower. (see results data sheet on next page) Both steam and diesel locomotives were attached to a string-line. As the locomotive advanced, the small moving platform inside the tower moved upward and picked up additional weight for every 3 inches of travel. At some point, every locomotive stalled out due to wheel slippage. The amount of weight pulled (tractive effort) was duly recorded. There were definitely some surprises and disappointments. David and Ross prepare a Shay to begin pulling. President Mike Smith conducts the business portion of our Club meeting. Treasurer Marion Hensley has received a rather large, monetary gift to the Club treasury. Club officers are now deciding how to best make use of this gift. Bud Hunter explained a new plan to assist young persons (age 10-18) to get started with G gauge trains. This new plan will be in the form of a Grant to qualified younger members. I urge any of our Club Members, if you have any interest at all in adding an extra train to yourown collection - or if you are just starting a large scale railroad, to check our Club Website and call Karen Dipple (812) (Huntingburg, Indiana).
