PAGE 2 VIEW DATES, PRICES & BOOK YOUR HOLIDAY HERE Introduction This unique family adventure holiday in Peru combines all the essential main areas that you would wish to visit including the Amazon rainforest, Cusco, a day on the Inca Trail, Machu Picchu and Lake Titicaca. We start out in the Amazon rainforest where we take a motorised canoe to our jungle lodge to see the magical wildlife in this pristine environment. We then fly to Cusco and descend to the Sacred Valley of the Incas where, from our comfortable accommodation, we visit the traditional Indian market at Pisac, an alpaca and weaving farm, and we can try our hand at some painting some pottery. The following day we visit the pictureque saltpans at Maras and have a cookery class learning a traditional way of cooking under hote stones. The adventure continues with the classic 1-day Inca Trail hike up to the Sun Gate, where we have our first glimpse of Machu Picchu. (Note: If Inca Trail permits are not available at the time of booking, an alternative walk or activity is arranged). After a night in the colourful town of Aguas Calientes (with the chance to try out the hot springs), we make an early morning return to the 'Lost City of the Incas' - Machu Picchu - and spend the morning here with a specialist guide. In the afternoon, we take the famous train ride back to Cusco. We visit the impressive Inca ruins that surround the Andean city of Cusco, either on an optional horse-back ride, or on foot. It's then onto Lake Titicaca and a boat ride to the Uros Islands where we overnight in a homestay before flying home from Juliaca...phew! This is one of the best family adventure holidays in Peru - if you are going to do it, you might as well do it right! Is this holiday for you? Suitable for children from 8 yrs old This holiday is designed for families to experience some of the highlights and the distinct culture and Inca Ruins of Peru. The emphasis is on touring and sightseeing and making it fun for the family at the same time. The walking is on well-defined tracks, including some sections of ancient Inca trail - namely when we have our day on the Inca Trail. The activities at the Amazon lodge will include boat rides, canopy walks and short (1-2 hrs) jungle walks in this hot humid environment. All safety equipment is provided where necessary throughout. All activities are designed for beginners and can be done by all members of the family. The accommodation we use throughout the tour is comfortable in well-located hotels. This is with the exception of the 1 night at a homestay on Lake Titicaca. In order to see all these key sights, it is necessary to travel some distance during the holiday. With families in mind we make this as comfortable as possible, using 1 internal flight of between 1 and 1.5 hours duration, while road transfers are kept to a minimum and are generally short, we do have a long day mainly on the bus when we journey from Cusco to Puno. Holiday Itinerary Day 1: Meet at the Amazon Jungle Lodge. A single transfer from Puerto Maldonado Airport is provided. Arriving into Puerto Maldonado airport in the Peruvian Amazon we are met by a representative and transferred to our Amazon jungle lodge for the next 2 days. From Puerto Maldonado we have an exciting 30 mins boat journey down river to the lodge, we then have a 3km / 1hr 30 mins slow walk through the jungle, and then a 20min canoe ride to reach the lodge. This is the only way to access our lodge and it is a haven of pristine wilderness in a private ecological reserve. This trip is all part of the adventure. Depending on our arrival time and how we are feeling from

PAGE 3 our long journey we may be able to participate in a river cruise to get become acquainted with the area and the slow pace of life here. LODGE MEALS LD Day 2: Amazon Rainforest guided exploration by dugout canoe and walks. Visiting pristine Amazon rainforest is something that most people can only dream of. Our lodge is situated next to the Tambopata National Reserve where the river provides access to an uninhabited core in a vast 2.5 million acre wilderness, home to the Amazon's five top predators - Jaguar, Giant Otter, Black Caiman, Harpy Eagle and Anaconda. There is a selection of activities today that we can choose from. A highlight a journey in a traditional dugout canoe on the beautiful oxbow, Lake Sandoval. Here we may see blue & yellow macaws, giant river otters catching fish, and howler monkeys. We walk along the trails and learn about the forest. Our guides teach us about the flora and fauna in the Amazon and the conservation work in the reserve and we learn a lot about the magical Amazon rainforest. LODGE MEALS BLD Day 3: Morning jungle activities. Fly to Cusco. Transfer to Pisac, visit Alpaca and Llama wool farm. Depending on our flight times out of Puerto Maldonado we have some time for further activities this morning, before our journey back out from the lodge. The flight is approximately 45 mins. On arrival in Cusco we transfer into the Sacred Valley of the Incas and to the quaint town of Pisac. This afternoon we visit the Awana Kancha centre, whose aim it is to keep alive the traditional textile arts. The centre revolves around the Alpaca and Llama farm, and we get to see these funny animals and their young at the farm. The wool from the alpaca's is used in the weaving which in turn helps the local communities' livelihoods, and ensures the survival of the ancient traditions. As we are now at an altitude of 2900 metres, it is best to spend the rest of today taking it easy in order to acclimatise. We can try the local altitude remedy, coca tea. We overnight at a hotel in Pisac. MEALS B Day 4: Optional pottery painting in Urubamba, afternoon exploring Inca ruins of Pisac. After breakfast we have the option to drive to Urubamba and visit a pottery workshop. Here we paint a plate, mug or bowl with some of the local artisans. These will be fired and then delivered to our hotel later. We return to Pisac for lunch and a chance to explore the Inca ruins. These are situated on a hill above the village and receive relatively few tourists visit the site. The most impressive feature is the agricultural terracing of flagstones set into the terrace walls. There are great views of the Urubamba Valley and jungle. After spending some time here we return to Pisac where there is time to look around the market streets. Weavings and hand-painted pottery are amongst the most colourful handicrafts. We have a second night in Pisac. MEALS BL Day 5: Learn to cook Pachamanca, visit Chinchero ruins and salt-pans. Transfer to Ollantaytambo. This morning we transfer to Chinchero. Another colourful town with many weavers, artisans and archaeological sites. The town is surrounded by green fields and the snow capped mountains of the sacred valley. We visit the spectacular working salt pans of Maras before heading to Ollantaytambo where we enjoy a cooking lesson on how to make a Pachamanca. This is a traditional Peruvian dish made with a special old technique. Stone are heated

PAGE 4 over a fire and then the meat is placed on top, and then it is covered with grass and earth! Whilst the Pachamanca is cooking in the hot stones we visit an organic farm, coffee roasting factory and cane alcohol distillery. After lunch we check into our hotel in Ollantaytambo and can explorer this interesting Inca town. MEALS BL Day 6: Day walk on the Inca Trail from km104 to Machu Picchu. Drive to Aguas Calientes. We catch the early morning train from Ollantaytambo beside the now torrential Urubamba River to km104. Here, we start our hike along the Royal Inca Trail. Whilst walking all we will carry is a daypack and our overnight luggage will be transferred to our hotel in Aguas Calientes (now also known as 'Pueblo Machu Picchu') to await our arrival. An initial hot ascent is rewarded by the arrival at Winay Wayna, a beautiful Inca ruin full of swallows and orchids. A contour path through the fascinating cloud forest leads to Inti Puncu (the Gateway of the Sun) and our first glimpse of Machu Picchu. Walking downhill, we pass through the ruins and catch a bus down to our hotel in the colourful town of Aguas Calientes. Anyone without a permit for the Inca trail or anyone who does not wish to make the hike up to Inti Punti from km104, will remain on the train to Aguas Calientes, check into the hotel, and then there are a number of options we can choose from. We can walk to the Mandor waterfall, or we can relax in the local hot springs and explore the market town of Aguas Calientes. If you are not walking the Inca Trail you can also visit Machu Picchu on this day, and you will need to pre-purchase the tickets. MEALS BL Day 7: Day exploring Machu Picchu. Transfer to Cusco. After an early breakfast we take the bus back up to Machu Picchu,. A local guide will give us the 'tour' of Machu Picchu and we will also have enough time to go exploring on our own. You are free to do whatever you like, providing you get back down on time to catch the afternoon train back to the Sacred Valley, where we meet our bus for the transfer to Cusco. The heart of Cusco is quite small and easy to get around on foot. Every small street or alley-way that we enter and every corner that we turn, brings another surprise, in the form of superbly constructed Incaic walls or the rather more architecturally extravagant Spanish Colonial churches and palaces. The city was once capital of the extensive Inca Empire and since that time has seen many changes since Pizarro took control in This evening, we have the opportunity to relax in one of Cusco's excellent restaurants. MEALS B Day 8: Visit the Inca sites of the Cusco Valley, Tambo Machay, Quenko and Sacayhuaman. Optional horse ride. Today we visit the major Inca sites of the Cusco Valley. Including Tambo Machay, Quenko and Sacsayhuaman with its incredible stone walls. We have an optional horse-back ride in the nearby countryside. In the afternoon we may have some time to relax and Cusco. MEALS BL Day 9: Transfer to Puno on the shores of Lake Titicaca.

PAGE 5 We leave the sacred valley today and take the tourist bus to Puno. The drive time is around 5-6 hours, but we make a full day of this journey with several stops at interesting sites and view points making it about a 10 hour day. Puno is situated on the shores of Lake Titicaca, which is the next point of our Peruvian Adventure! Puno has great shopping, and depending on our arrival time we have a chance to explore before dinner. MEALS BL Day 10: Boat trip on Lake Titicaca, visit the reed islands of Uros. Overnight with family on Amantani Island. Forming part of the border between Peru and Bolivia, the sacred lake of the Incas, Lake Titicaca is at an elevation of 3830 metres. Here the god Viracocha rose and created the sun, moon, stars and the first people. It is the largest navigable lake in the world and is renown for its azure blue beauty. There are several islands in the lake, the most important on the Bolivian side being Isla del Sol which was home of the Inca god Inti. In Peru the 'floating' Uros Islands which are man-made from reeds, are home to a pre-incan people who live a simple traditional life. We board our motor boat launch for a fascinating visit to the floating islands of the Uros Indians. Our guide fully explains the local history, traditions and agricultural methods as we visit the amazing floating reed islands of the Uros. We arrive at the island of Amantani for lunch. Here we stay with local families in a community-based project. We are allocated rooms in family houses and this is a unique chance to truly understand the lives of these proud people and experience how they live. We may wish to walk to the hill above the village to witness an amazing sunset over the lake. Whilst the accommodation is fairly basic, the experience of staying with a family is truly amazing and a great chance for a unique cultural exchange. HOMESTAY MEALS BLD Day 11: Visit Taquile Island, visiting male knitters. Boat to Puno. This morning we take the boat back to Puno, visiting Taquile Island on the way. The locals here, the Taquilenos are known for their fine handwoven textiles and clothing. Knitting is done exclusively by males, starting at the age of eight years old. The women make the yarn and weave. We then continue to Puno and check back into our hotel. In the evening we can enjoy a 'farewell' dinner taken in one of Puno's excellent restaurants. MEALS BL Day 12: Departure day. A single transfer to Juliaca Airport is provided (via Sillustani ruins). After breakfast we depart Puno on a single timed transfer to the airport. En route to Juliaca we stop at the pre-inca burial ground at Sillustani for a quick visit. KE Land Only package services end at the airport. Altitude This holiday involves going to high altitude. During the course of your trip you will reach altitudes in excess of 3500 metres. This is not something that you should worry about; the human body is quite capable of adapting to a very wide range of altitudes, but it is important that we follow some simple rules in order to acclimatise successfully.

PAGE 8 Before coming on this holiday you should read the advice on trekking at high altitude. You can also talk to one of our trekking experts if you have any concerns about altitude. On this trip we carry a portable altitude chamber (PAC-bag) and/or bottled oxygen for use in emergencies. Park Fees & Permits The cost of your 1 day Inca Trail permit is included in the holiday price. Please note that the Peruvian Authorities strictly limit the amount of Inca Trail Permits issued for each day and that permits are issued on a first come, first served basis. The permits are only issued against a name and a passport number. Once issued they cannot be amended, cancelled or transferred. In order to ensure your place on the Inca Trail, KE will purchase your permit as soon as you make your booking if the holiday is guaranteed. To cover this you will asked to pay an additional deposit at the time of booking. Once the trip is guaranteed to run, the cost of your Inca Trail permit cannot be refunded (unless we cancel the trip). Please note that if there are no permits left for the day walk on the Inca Trail, then you will be taken on an alternative walk on that day. The alternative walk is scenic and has many brilliant view points and is a lot less touristy. Spending Money Approximately $600 per family (based on a family of 4, mum, dad and 2 kids) should be sufficient to cover your personal spending requirements. This amount should also cover tips for drivers, trek crew and local guides. There is no need to obtain local currency (Nuevos Soles) before you travel as sterling, Euros and US dollars are easily exchanged in Cusco. You can also use your credit or debit card to get cash from ATM machines in Cusco. If you intend to bring your travel money with you, we recommend that you take this in the form of US dollars in cash. Airport baggage carriers are the only exception and here tipping is compulsory as these people are unwaged and make a living by carrying your luggage. The general rule is 1 sol (16p) per bag. For hotel staff, tipping is not expected, but is welcome - for hotel porters, 1 sol per bag carried. As with most countries is usual to tip in restaurants, between 5-15% for adequate to excellent service is usual. Specialist guides or tour conductors (i.e. on sightseeing tours) $10 - $15 per day (from the group). Drivers, sols per day from the group is sufficient. Please note that drivers of standard taxis do not usually expect a tip. You will also want to tip your guide and we recommend you do this as a group with each family contributing $40 - $60. Beat The Jet Lag Our holidays are normally designed with minimal 'down time' at the start of the trip, but having a day or two at the beginning will have the additional benefit of allowing you time to get over the stress of a long journey or travelling

Please note that certain activities may attract a higher premium. In addition Campbell Irvine Direct cannot provide cover for KE climbing trips above 6000m. Cover for these can be obtained through either the British Mountaineering Council (BMC) or Snowcard. TRAVELEX is a USA based insurer offering travel insurance, which can be used by US citizens and US residents only. KE recommends the "Travelex Select" package for our holidays. If your holiday involves using mountaineering equipment (ropes, harness or crampons), for climbing or glacial travel, you should consider the "Adventure Plus Pak" optional upgrade on the Travelex Select Plan. Please refer to the 'Description of Coverage' for a summary of the terms, conditions, exclusions and limitations of the applicable Protection Plan. This policy will also cover KE climbing trips above 6000m. We hope that this trip notes has answered most of your questions. Please feel free to contact us and speak to one of our experts.
