PAGE 2 Introduction The Inca Trail is one of the world s greatest treks. Traversing the foothills of the mountains provides an unforgettably dramatic trek to the fabulous Inca ruins of Machu Picchu. This family trek is tailored to enable keen and fit teenagers to experience this wonder of the modern world for themselves. Before our trek we have a couple of days to acclimatise and enjoy white-water rafting on the Urubamba River and a bike ride in the Sacred Valley of the Incas. We also enjoy a visit to the colourful Pisac market. We then have four days walking on the Inca Trail from km 82 to the Sun Gate with the famous views of Machu Picchu. This is a great trek for the family, crossing two high passes, with the high point at 4212m and camping for 3 nights at a maximum of 3680m. With blue glacial lakes, cloud forest, orchids, hummingbirds, magnificent Inca settlements and stone-paved trails, there is no other short trek in the world that offers such a variety of experiences. Following the trek we have a full day exploring the amazing Machu Picchu. This is truly a once in a lifetime experience for you and your children. BOOK EARLY for the Inca Trail! Permits for the Inca Trail are limited and allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. If permits are full then we can easily arrange an alternative family trek along the Salkantay trek to Machu Picchu or the 5 day Lares Trek. Contact us for details. Is this holiday for you? The walking is on well-defined tracks, including some sections of ancient Inca highways, which are paved with stone in places. The walking will consist of 4 consecutive days of between 4-8 hours walking. When biking we will be following jeep roads, with some sections of paved road and some sections of footpath. The biking is principally downhill or on the level. It is not strenuous or technically difficult and it is suitable for a range of skills including the first time off-road biker. There is always the option of taking the support vehicle if you don t fancy any part of the riding. All bikes and helmets are provided. For the rafting we have chosen a stretch of the Urubamba River, offering white-water rafting which varies between River Grade 3 to 3+. Comprehensive instruction is given by our professional river guides prior to setting off and full safety equipment and support is used throughout. You do not need previous experience to take part in a rafting however it is a requirement that you are able to swim unaided for at least 25m. Holiday Itinerary Day 1: Meet at the hotel in Cusco. A single transfer from Cusco Airport is provided. Arriving in the former Inca capital of Southern Peru, we are met and transferred to the hotel in Cusco. We meet our guide today and he/she will give us a full briefing for the adventure ahead! And also give us the special kit bags for the Inca Trail. Depending on flight times you will have time to walk around Cusco this afternoon and get a feel for this fantastic town. The beautiful historic centre of Cusco was declared a World Heritage Site in 1983 with Inca and colonial architecture evident all around. Hotel Cusco. HOTEL

PAGE 3 Day 2: Morning guided walking tour of Cusco, afternoon free time in Cusco. Our guide meets us this morning and gives us a brief tour of Cusco. A short walking tour is a great way to get your bearings and also helps you get used to the altitude. We might go up to the local market and maybe to the San Blas area, the traditional old quarter of Cusco with it's narrow, steep streets. We have the afternoon free to take it easy and discover Cusco on our own. It is a good opportunity to rest from the journey in preparation for the exciting week ahead. However there is also lots to do - whether your interest is exploring Inca ruins, visiting Colonial churches, bargain hunting in artisan markets, visiting the chocolate museum or just relaxing over a coffee on a terrace overlooking the Plaza de Armas, Cusco has something for everyone. Hotel Cusco. MEALS B Day 3: Urubamba white-water rafting & Pisac Market. Today we experience white water rafting on grade III-IV rapids on the Upper Urubamba river. Our expert guides give us a thorough safety briefing, and we use some of the best equipment in the country. Fully prepared we launch from the bank and off down the finest one day section of whitewater in Peru. Whether you are a beginner or expert you are sure to finish the day with a grin from ear to ear. Once we've changed into dry clothes we have picnic lunch on the banks of the river before the short drive to Pisac. Here we explore this famous handicraft market. We can try the tasty empanadas fresh from the old town oven. We then check into our hotel. Hotel in Pisac. HOTEL MEALS BL Day 4: Biking in the Sacred Valley of the Incas. This bike ride is perfect for anyone who enjoys getting out on a bike. Its versatility means that it can easily be adapted to suit all levels and ages. It's an incredibly scenic ride with gentle descents and a lovely amble through the heart of the Sacred Valley of the Incas. If we wake up early in Pisac we can go and enjoy another visit to the local market to pick up souvenirs or simply take in the atmosphere before the main tourists arrive. After breakfast we unload the bikes, kit up and begin the dirt track ride down into the Andean village of Taray. This lovely track undulates between local villages and haciendas, where we see traditional farming methods still in use against the beautiful backdrop of glaciated mountains and Inca ruins. We stop for a picnic lunch en-route. The support vehicle will be on hand for the final section, allowing us to carry on through the villages of Qoya, Lamay and Calca. We then transfer for the last section through Urubamba and then onto Ollantaytambo, where we check into our hotel. Hotel in Ollantaytambo. HOTEL MEALS BL Day 5: Inca Trail Trek (km 82) to camp at Llactapata (2788m). Our four day Inca Trail trek is carefully tailored to avoid the crowds. By leaving later than everyone else and allowing an extra day, we spend the whole trail out of sync with other tourists. Thus we will literally have the trail to yourselves! This morning we visit the old Inca town of Ollantaytambo. After a look around we have a short drive to the trail head at Piscacucho (km 82) where we have lunch. Here we meet the porters and cooks who will support our journey to Machu Picchu. With the crowds now long gone, we hike along an undulating trail above the Urubamba river to camp beside the spectacular ruins of Llactapata (2788m). Our luggage is carried by the porters, our tents are put up and the food is prepared for us. All we need to do is enjoy the walking on this amazing historic trail in some outstandingly beautiful scenery.

PAGE 4 CAMPING ASCENT 260M DISTANCE 10KM MEALS BLD DESCENT 350M TIME 5-6 HRS TREKKING HOURS Day 6: Inca Trail Trek through cloud forest to Llulluchapampa camp (3680m). After a hearty breakfast we gently ascend to the Cusichaca valley to the small hamlet of Huayllabamba. This is the last inhabited place on the trail. A little steeper now, we head up the beautiful Inca path, past hummingbirds and stunted cloud forest to camp at Llulluchapampa (3680m). This fabulous grassy area has outstanding views and we might see some of the Andean deer coming out to feed here. CAMPING DESCENT 130M ASCENT 1230M TIME 7-8 HRS TREKKING HOURS DISTANCE 11KM MEALS BLD Day 7: Inca Trail Trek over Dead Woman's Pass (4212m) to camp at Phuyupatamarca (3650m). Today is the most challenging day but also the most exhilarating. We climb to Dead Woman's Pass (4212m), the high point of the trail, before dropping into the Pacasmayo valley. Climbing once more, we pass the Inca control post of Runkuracay to the second pass of the day (3998m). On a clear day there are spectacular views towards Pumahuanca mountain in the Vilcabamba range. We continue on a well preserved Inca trail to Sayacamrca. Located at the junction of two old Inca roads, historians still argue over its exact purpose. A few more gentle ups and downs and we arrive to our stunning campsite for the night, Phuyupatamarca, or 'the place above the clouds' (3650m). CAMPING DESCENT 1130M ASCENT 1140M TIME 7-8 HRS TREKKING HOURS DISTANCE 12KM MEALS BLD Day 8: Final Inca Trail trek day to the Sun Gate at Machu Picchu. This is the day we finally reach Machu Picchu. As we step out of our tents the views are simply superb. We might see the sun rising over the snow capped mountains Salkantay (6200m) and Veronica (5800m). Or perhaps we will have a cloud inversion, with the clouds filling the valley beneath us. After saying a fond farewell to our porters (they take the bags to the road head whilst we walk to Machu Picchu) it is time to put on our boots and head to Machu Picchu. We descend through the cloud forest on the beautiful Inca stairways, to Winay Wayna, another interesting ruin full of swallows and orchids. Finally we contour the hillside to arriva at Inti Punku, the gateway of the Sun. As you step through the old stone gateway Machu Picchu appears laid out before our eyes. After plenty of photos we leave this wonder of the world and take the bus down to the colourful town of Aguas Calientes. We check into our hotel and enjoy a well deserved hot shower and dinner. Hotel in Aguas Calientas. HOTEL DESCENT 1500M ASCENT 300M TIME 5-6 HRS TREKKING HOURS DISTANCE 11KM MEALS BL Day 9: Machu Picchu Tour.

PAGE 5 For years this was lost to the jungle. Rediscovered in 1911 by Yale professor Hiram Bingham, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983 and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2007, Machu Picchu still exceeds all expectations. Perched high on an inaccessible hilltop it is protected by huge cliffs and the raging Urubamba river. Things are easier now than in the time of the Incas as we take the 20 minute bus ride up to the site. We arrive early with the guide. The guided tour takes around 2 hrs and we have a few hours to wander amongst the old Inca walls or just sit and take in the scale of the place on your own. For those who want a longer walk you can take the hour long trail to the Sun Gate, or a shorter trail to visit the Inca Bridge which once spanned a sheer cliff face. We take the bus back down and then the train back along the Urubamba River to Cusco. The scenery is beautiful as the train jolts softly along, allowing you to sit, stare out the window and reflect on all we have seen. Hotel Cusco. HOTEL MEALS B Day 10: Day in Cusco. After our amazing time trekking and at Machu Picchu we have a free day in Cusco to relax. This is a great opportunity for some last souvenirs shopping (there are plenty of lovely and colourful things to take home!) or just relaxing with some coffee (or Pisco Sour) and read the last pages of your book. Hotel Cusco. HOTEL MEALS B Day 11: Departure Day. Flight time permitting we might have a little time for some last minute sightseeing and souvenir shopping in Cusco before the single timed transfer to the airport. HOTEL MEALS B Extend Your Holiday Extensions When booking your holiday, you will be able to 'add an extension option'. Once we have received your booking we will contact you to discuss additional services required for the extension and to take any additional deposit.

Group Leader & Support Staff On this holiday the group will be accompanied throughout by a professional English-speaking local guide. In addition while trekking the group will be supported by a full crew of camp staff and porters whilst on the Inca Trail. Spending Money Approximately $500 per family (based on a family of 4, mum, dad and 2 kids) should be sufficient to cover your personal spending requirements including the non-included meals. This amount should also cover tips for drivers, trek crew and local guides. There is no need to obtain local currency (Nuevos Soles) before you travel as sterling, Euros and US dollars are easily exchanged in Cusco. You can also use your credit or debit card to get cash from ATM machines in Cusco. If you intend to bring your travel money with you, we recommend that you take this in the form of US dollars in cash. Guidance On Tipping Tipping is common in Peru, however you must remember that it is voluntary, and how much you give depends on how you feel about the service you have received. Airport baggage carriers are the only exception and here tipping is compulsory as these people are unwaged and make a living by carrying your luggage. The general rule is 1 sol (16p) per bag. For hotel staff, tipping is not expected, but is welcome - for hotel porters, 1 sol per bag carried. As with most countries is usual to tip in restaurants, between 5-15% for adequate to excellent service is usual. Specialist guides or tour conductors (i.e. on sightseeing tours) $10 - $15 per day (from the group). Drivers, sols per day from the group is sufficient. Please note that drivers of standard taxis do not usually expect a tip. For the river guides and support crew during the rafting, it is recommended that each family contributes sols.

PAGE 9 You will also want to tip your guide and we recommend you do this as a group with each family contributing $40 - $60. For the support crew on trek (guides, cooks, porters etc.), it is recommended that each family contributes around $50 to $60 to a group tipping pool. Beat The Jet Lag Our holidays are normally designed with minimal 'down time' at the start of the trip, but having a day or two at the beginning will have the additional benefit of allowing you time to get over the stress of a long journey or travelling across time zones, leaving you refreshed and ready for your holiday. We can easily arrange for you to have additional nights and airport transfers. Free KE Gift We give you a free gift as a way to thank all our clients who book a KE holiday. Choose from KE T-shirts, buffs, KE trek bags* (where applicable) plus many more. Alternatively you can choose to make a 10 donation to the Juniper Trust Charity. You can make your selection in your My KE account after booking. * A free KE trek bag is available on this holiday. Delivery outside of the UK will be charged. Baggage Allowance Pack animals are not allowed on the Inca Trail and all baggage will be carried by local porters. Each group on the Inca Trail is restricted to a maximum number of porters designated by the park authority. The limit is imposed by the Peruvian National Park Authorities and is designed to minimise the impact on the Inca Trail from the many visitors it receives. Before starting on the Inca Trail you will be provided with an approved Inca Trail trek bag which is smaller than a KE kitbag. Whilst trekking, the packed weight of this trek bag including your sleeping bag, needs to be a maximum of 8kgs. This will get weighed by the Inca Trail authorities. It is possible to leave clothes and other items not required on trek at the group hotel in Cusco; items of clean clothing can be sent to meet you at the end of the trek in Aguas Calientes for the night and day at Machu Picchu to assist with the restricted baggage allowance for the trek. You will also carry your own day pack with your personal items such as camera and fleece etc. There is no weight limit on your day pack. For international flights please check your baggage allowance with your airline. Group Size & Holiday Status For each holiday there is a minimum number of participants required to enable it to go ahead. Once the minimum number is reached, the trip status will change from 'Available' to 'Guaranteed to run'. You can check the trip status for each departure in Dates and Prices table. Other than in exceptional circumstances, we will not cancel a trip once it has achieved this guaranteed to run status and so you are free to proceed with your international flight booking and other travel arrangements. General Information Passport & Visas A passport with 6 months remaining validity at the end of your stay is generally required for visits to countries outside the EU. The information that we provide is for UK passport holders. Please check the relevant embassy or consulate for other nationalities. It is your responsibility to ensure that you have the correct travel documents and visas for your holiday. Visa requirements and charges are subject to change without notice. If you are travelling outside the EU you should have at least 2 blank pages in your passport for each country that you visit.

PAGE 10 Visa Peru UK and USA passport holders do not require a visa for short stays. When passing through immigration you will need to request a copy of your TAM Migration form. You will need to retain this document and keep it safe, as you will be asked to produce it before you depart Peru. Transit Via USA You will require an ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorisation), and you must get this before boarding any US-bound aircraft or ship, or entering on a land border. The fee is USD$14 and you should apply for it at With the ESTA complete, the majority of British Citizen passport holders can enter the US under the Visa Waiver Programme, VWP. As of 1st April 2016 you will be required to have a passport with an intergrated chip. Note that if you have travelled to Iraq, Syria, Iran or Sudan in the last 5yrs you will have to apply for a visa rather than the Visa Waiver Programme. NOTE: This is required if you are transiting through the USA Health & Vaccinations You should contact your doctor or travel clinic to check whether you require any specific vaccinations or other preventive measures. You should be up to date with routine courses and boosters as recommended in the UK e.g. diphtheria-tetanus-polio and measles-mumps-rubella, along with hepatitis A and typhoid. Malarial prophylaxis is not usually required for trips in the mountains, however if you are visiting rural and remote low lying areas then they might be necessary. On holidays to more remote areas you should also have a dentist check up. A good online resource is Travel Health Pro. Zika virus has been confirmed as active in this country. It is a tropical viral disease spread by daytime biting mosquitoes, like dengue and malaria. There is currently no vaccine or prophylaxis available and therefore the best form of prevention is to avoid being bitten. We recommend you take the usual precautions to avoid mosquito bites. The mosquitoes that transmit ZIKV are unlikely to be found above 2,000m altitude. For more information, visit the website of the National Travel Network and Centre (NaTHNaC) at Dengue fever is a known risk in places visited. It is a tropical viral disease spread by daytime biting mosquitoes, like malaria. There is currently no vaccine or prophylaxis available and therefore the best form of prevention is to avoid being bitten. We recommend you take precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Currency The unit of currency in Peru is the Nuevos Soles. Electricity Supply & Plug We recommend you check if you require an adaptor for your electrical items at: Travel Aware As a reputable tour operator, KE supports the British Foreign & Commonwealth Offices' Travel Aware campaign to enable British citizens to prepare for their journeys overseas. The 'Travel Aware' website provides a single, authoritative source of advice for all kinds of travellers and we recommend that prior to travel, all KE clients visit the official UK Government website at travelaware.campaign.gov.uk and read the FCO Travel Advice for their chosen destination. Climate The climate of the Andean valleys which corresponds to the region between 3000 and 4000 metres is characterised by hot wet summers and cool dry winters. The Southern Hemisphere winter season in the Andes runs roughly from April through to October and this is the optimum period to visit this part of Peru. At this time we can expect the days to be warm and generally sunny, with temperatures between 12 and 20 C. Above c. 3500m. during this season, the night-time temperatures will fall below freezing.
