PAGE 2 Introduction This unique family adventure holiday to Peru takes us on a fascinating journey from the Andean mountains to the Amazon rainforest. The Sacred Valley is packed with characterful Andean villages and archaeological remains just waiting to be explored. Visit markets and weavers and have a go at making and painting some of your own pottery as a souvenir. Spend a full day trekking the classic Inca Trail up to the Sun Gate at Inti Punka, where you will get your first jaw-dropping view of Machu Picchu. Perched strategically at the top of vertical cliffs, it s not hard to see how the conquistadors never found the fabled Lost City of the Incas. After a special train journey on the Vistadome train, Cusco makes a great base for a few days. Explore the colonial city and surrounding Inca sites and try your hand at whitewater rafting, mountain-biking or some chilled stand-up paddle-boarding. Once you've had your fill of Inca culture and adventure, fly deep into the Amazon Rainforest and spend the next three days at a remote jungle lodge. From here, venture out with an expert team of guides and trackers to observe monkeys, giant river otters, caiman and a wealth of colourful birds and learn all about the rich biodiversity and conservation of this habitat. Forget the zoo, this is the real thing! The sights and sounds of the jungle will stay with you forever and is the perfect finale to a magnificent active holiday with the family in Peru. Is this holiday for you? Suitable for children from 8 yrs old This holiday offers a unique blend of ancient history and incredible wildlife spotting opportunities. Whether you're a budding Indiana Jones or naturalist Steve Backshall, this trip offers it all! The itinerary takes us to some of the lesser known spots in the Sacred Valley. All walking and trekking, including that on the Inca Trail (10km and 5-8hrs), is guided on well-defined and marked paths. No experience is necessary for the optional activities when in Cusco. They are run by highly qualified, experienced instructors and all safety equipment (bouyancy aids, helmets etc) will be provided. When staying at our Amazon rainforest lodge, we will take part in a range of activities, including boat rides, canopy walks and short (1-2hrs) jungle walks in a hot and humid environment. The accommodation is in hotels and lodges which have been specially selected for families with comfort, character and great location. Internal transfers and long bus journeys have been kept to an absolute minimum with families in mind and include a train ride and a short internal flight. (Note: If Inca Trail permits are not available at the time of booking, an alternative walk or activity is arranged) Holiday Itinerary Day 1: Meet guide at Cusco Airport. Transfer to Pisac, stopping off to meet and feed alpacas and llamas. On arrival to Cusco Airport we are met by our guide and transfer to Pisac. On the way we stop off at the Awana Kancha farm, if time allows. Loosely translated as 'palace of weaving' we meet and get to feed a variety of camelid species including llama, alpaca and vicuna. Here we learn all about the textile production process, looking at rearing, shearing, weaving and dyeing. Afterwards we continue to Pisac and settle into our comfortable hotel. HOTEL Day 2: Wander around the secluded ruins above Pisac and local market. Optional pottery lesson.

PAGE 3 Today we will explore the little-visited remains of the Inca citadel above Pisac. These ruins are considered to be among the finest archaeological sites in Peru. Vast terraces sweep across the hillside, contouring around the curvature of the landscape. Perched strategically above the Urubamba Valley, the town was thought to guard the approach to Machu Picchu. It isn't unusual to find yourself alone as you wander the site and marvel at the towering walls and doorways. Much of the area remains unexcavated which lends the place an air of intrigue and mystery. We will return to Pisac for a regional lunch and explore the colourful market. In the afternoon there is an optional activity of spending some time with a local potter and creating our own souvenirs under their expert tutelage and guidance. For those choosing not to have the pottery lesson, Pisac is a lovely village to wander around. You may wish to relax by the swimming pool or enjoy a game of high altitude tennis back at the hotel instead! HOTEL MEALS BL Day 3: Visit the famous weavers and artisans of Chinchero. Explore the salt pans of Maras and Moray. Overnight beneath the Inca fortress of Ollantaytambo. Today we venture deeper in to the Sacred Valley to aid our acclimatisation. We travel to the small, rustic village of Chinchero, sat above Cusco, surrounded by the peaks of the Vilcabamba range and the snow-capped peak of Salkantay. We spend a while exploring this beautiful village, with its mix of Inca and colonial architecture. Chinchero has a fantastic market filled with an abundance of local produce and boasts some of the best and most sought after weavers and textile merchants in Peru- a perfect place for buying a souvenir. We then visit the photogenic salt-pans of Maras, where for thousands of years indigenous people extracted salt from subterranean streams. Close by is the Inca site of Moray, where we can learn all about this vast agricultural laboratory. The concentric, circular terraces that drop in altitude allowed the Inca to recreate virtually every environment in their Andean territory allowing them to experiment with food crops. We continue our journey into the Sacred Valley to Ollantaytambo, itself an important location to the Incas. If time permits we will visit the stunning ruins, towering over the village. HOTEL MEALS BL Day 4: Trek the classic one day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu via the Inti Punka Sun Gate. Descend to Aguas Calientes. Now we have had the time to adjust to the altitude, we can set our sights on the crown jewels of the Inca empire, Machu Picchu. We join the classic Inca trail by climbing steadily up to the ruins at Winay Wayna. The steep terraces and temples will have you amazed at the ingenuity and engineering of these ancient people. Here we enjoy incredible views across the mountains and valleys that hid Machu Picchu for centuries. We spend the day trekking until we arrive at the Inti Punku Sun Gate, where we will get our first, unforgettable view of Machu Picchu. It isn't hard to imagine how it must have felt for the real-life Indiana Jones, Hiram Bingham, when he first laid eyes on the ruins, overgrown and partially reclaimed by the jungle in After a day of trekking we will be grateful for the transfer down to Aguas Calientes, nestled on the valley floor. Machu Picchu can wait for tomorrow. HOTEL DISTANCE 10KM MEALS BL TIME 5-8HRS HOURS Day 5: Guided tour of Machu Picchu citadel. Vistadome train to Cusco. We arise early in the morning and take the bus up to the citadel of Machu Picchu. Here we will have an interpretive guided tour of the ruins. You may have seen a thousand pictures of Machu Picchu before, but nothing can prepare you for wandering around the ruins, stepping through doorways and staircases crafted by some of the most gifted masons of the ancient world. Machu Picchu is thought to have been one of the royal residences of the Inca

PAGE 4 emperor Pachacuti in the 15th century. It consists of palaces, temples and agricultural terraces. One of the most impressive aspects of Machu Picchu is its geographical situation, located at the top of a steep precipice. With vertiginous steep cliffs on all sides it's unsurprising that it remained undiscovered from the Spanish conquistadors. From Aguas Calientes we catch the Vistadome train back to Cusco. The Vistadome carriages are fitted with panoramic windows to the side and above which will immerse us into the beautiful mountain scenery. HOTEL MEALS B Day 6: Explore the ruins of Tambo Machay, Quenko and Sacsayhuaman. Cusco is the capital of the region, and has remained an important city through the ages. Colonial buildings sit atop Inca foundations, narrow cobbled alleys wind their way steeply uphill and it's not uncommon to bump into a llama roaming the back streets. This fascinating city remains a contradiction: you can sense the history of its ancient past hanging over it, yet at the same time it retains a buzz and cosmopolitan feel all of its own. The city boasts some amazing archaeological attractions and we will have a tour of the ruins of Tambo Machay, Quenko and Sacsayhuaman. This would be an ideal opportunity to enjoy some Cuzqueno culinary classics, such as anticuchos (beef kebabs), rocoto relleno (stuffed peppers served with a potato gratin) or trucha frita (pan-fried trout) washed down with an ice cold Inca Cola! HOTEL MEALS BL Day 7: Day at leisure in Cusco. Optional rafting, stand-up paddle boarding or mountain biking activities. After all this exploring, today is free to spend as you wish. Watch life unfold on the Plaza de Armas with a hot chocolate, or try your hand at bartering at the local artisan market for gifts and souvenirs. For those with a thirst for adventure, a range of optional activities can be organised locally. Jump on a mountain bike to explore the mountains and valleys on two wheels or take part in a thrilling white-water rafting trip. For those who want something a little more chilled, try your hand at stand-up paddle boarding. Whatever you choose, be it relaxing or a new adventure sport, Cusco has it all, set in the most spectacular scenery! (Optional activities need to be booked and paid for in advance) HOTEL MEALS B Day 8: Fly from Cusco to Puerto Maldonado and take a motor-canoe along the Madre de Dios river to our Amazon Rainforest lodge. This morning we fly from Cusco into the Amazon Rainforest. Arriving into Puerto Maldonado Airport, we transfer to the river port on the Madre de Dios River. Many of the jungle lodges will require a journey down-river to a trailhead. It will be necessary to travel on foot through the forest or take to a canoe to paddle through parts of the forest floor are submerged and oxbow lakes may need to be crossed. This is the only way to access remote lodges and is all part of the adventure. Depending on our arrival time and how we are feeling from our long journey, we may be able to participate in a river cruise to get acquainted with the area and the slow pace of life here. Luggage and personal items are necessarily restricted to 10kg and there is a secure facility to leave the rest of your luggage at Puerto Maldonado. LODGE MEALS BLD

PAGE 5 Day 9: A full day exploring the Amazon Rainforest with an interpretive guide. Visiting pristine Amazon Rainforest is something that most people can only dream of. Our lodge is situated next to the Tambopata National Reserve where the river provides access to an uninhabited core in a vast 2.5 million acre wilderness, home to the Amazon's five top predators - jaguar, giant otter, black caiman, harpy eagle and anaconda. There is a selection of activities today that we can choose from. A highlight is a journey in a traditional dugout canoe on the beautiful oxbow Lake Sandoval. Here we may see blue & yellow macaws, giant river otters catching fish, and howler monkeys. We walk along the trails and learn about the forest. Our guides teach us about the flora and fauna in the Amazon and the conservation work in the reserve and we learn a lot about the magical Amazon Rainforest. LODGE MEALS BLD Day 10: Final morning of jungle activities before departure. Depending on our flight times out of Puerto Maldonado we have some time to explore the jungle some more before undertaking our journey back out from the lodge. So, when in the Sacred Valley and Cusco you will have a guide expert in trekking, Inca history and Andean culture. However, in the Amazon you will be accompanied by a jungle guide who specialises in wildlife and jungle survival. Altitude This holiday involves going to high altitude. During the course of your trip you will reach altitudes in excess of 3500 metres. This is not something that you should worry about; the human body is quite capable of adapting to a very wide range of altitudes, but it is important that we follow some simple rules in order to acclimatise successfully. Before coming on this holiday you should read the advice on trekking at high altitude. You can also talk to one of our trekking experts if you have any concerns about altitude.

PAGE 7 Park Fees & Permits The cost of your 1 day Inca Trail permit is included in the holiday price. Please note that the Peruvian Authorities strictly limit the amount of Inca Trail Permits issued for each day and that permits are issued on a first come, first served basis. The permits are only issued against a name and a passport number. Once issued, they cannot be amended, cancelled or transferred. In order to ensure your place on the Inca Trail, KE will purchase your permit as soon as you make your booking if the holiday is guaranteed. Once the trip is guaranteed to run, the cost of your Inca Trail permit cannot be refunded (unless we cancel the trip). Please note that if there are no permits left for the day walk on the Inca Trail, then you will be taken on an alternative walk on that day. The alternative walk is scenic and has many brilliant view points and is a lot less touristy. Spending Money Approximately 800 per family (based on a family of two adults and two children) should be sufficient to cover your meals and personal spending requirements. This amount should also cover tips for drivers, trek crew and local guides. There is no need to obtain local currency (Nuevos Soles) before you travel as sterling, Euros and US dollars are easily exchanged in Cusco. You can also use your credit or debit card to get cash from ATM machines in Cusco. If you intend to bring your travel money with you, we recommend that you take this in the form of US dollars in cash. OPTIONAL ACTIVITIES: Optional activities are available on this trip. Please see separate information tab for costs. Guidance On Tipping Tipping is common in Peru, however you must remember that it is voluntary, and how much you give depends on how you feel about the service you have received. Airport baggage carriers are the only exception and here tipping is compulsory as these people are unwaged and make a living by carrying your luggage. The general rule is 1 sol (23p) per bag. For hotel staff tipping is not expected, but is welcome - for hotel porters, 1 sol per bag carried. As with most countries it's usual to tip in restaurants; between 5-15% to reward good service is usual. Specialist guides or tour conductors (i.e. on sightseeing tours) $10 - $15 per day (from the group). Drivers, sols per day from the group is sufficient. Please note that drivers of standard taxis do not usually expect a tip. You will also want to tip your guide and we recommend you do this as a group with each family contributing $40 - $60. Optional Activities Please note that these prices are correct at time of writing, but are subject to change without warning. All prices are in USD and per person based on a family of four. Optional activities taken outside the KE holiday are at your own risk. These activities need to be booked and paid for in advance to avoid disappointment. After you have made your holiday booking, please contact the Customer Sales & Support team to discuss booking your optional activity.

Beat The Jet Lag Our holidays are normally designed with minimal 'down time' at the start of the trip, but having a day or two at the beginning will have the additional benefit of allowing you time to get over the stress of a long journey or travelling across time zones, leaving you refreshed and ready for your holiday. We can easily arrange for you to have additional nights and airport transfers. Free KE Gift We would like to give you a free gift as a way to say thank you when you book your holiday. Choose from exclusive KE branded t-shirts, caps, neckwarmers, trek bags* and more. Alternatively you can choose to make a 10 donation to the Juniper Trust Charity. Please visit our Free KE Gifts page for more details of all our KE Branded goodies on offer. Baggage Allowance For this holiday, you should take one piece of luggage and a daypack. It is easier for transfers to have a soft bag on this holiday, but not essential if you prefer luggage with wheels. For the Amazon rainforest experience, you are restricted to 10kg per person of luggage. On arrival in Puerto Maldonado, you will be issued with a duffel bag to pack your 10kg in. The rest of your luggage stays in a secure office in Puerto Maldonado. For international flights please check your baggage allowance with your airline. Group Size & Holiday Status

PAGE 9 For each holiday there is a minimum number of participants required to enable it to go ahead. Once the minimum number is reached, the trip status will change from 'Available' to 'Guaranteed to run'. You can check the trip status for each departure in Dates and Prices table. Other than in exceptional circumstances, we will not cancel a trip once it has achieved this guaranteed to run status and so you are free to proceed with your international flight booking and other travel arrangements. Recommended Outdoor Retailers Many of the Equipment items listed above are available from Cotswold Outdoor - our 'Official Recommended Outdoor Retailer'. When you book a holiday with KE you will receive 15% discount voucher from Cotswold Outdoor and other retailers. >> Find out more General Information Passport & Visas A passport with 6 months remaining validity at the end of your stay is generally required for visits to countries outside the EU. 10 PAGE 10 Climate The climate of the Andean valleys which corresponds to the region between 3000 and 4000 metres is characterised by hot, wet summers and cool, dry winters. The Southern Hemisphere winter season in the Andes runs roughly from April through to October and this is the optimum period to visit this part of Peru. At this time we can expect the days to be warm and generally sunny, with temperatures between 12 and 20 C. Above c. 3500m. during this season, the night-time temperatures will fall below freezing. In the Amazon basin you can expect high levels of humidity and heat, but it can still feel relatively cool at night. The 'Travel Aware' website provides a single, authoritative source of advice for all kinds of travellers and we recommend that prior to travel, all KE clients visit the official UK Government website at travelaware.campaign.gov.uk and read the FCO Travel Advice for their chosen destination. North Americans can also check out the U.S. Department of State website: for essential travel advice and tips. KE treat the safety and security of all clients as the most important aspect of any trip we organise. We would not run any trip that we did not consider reasonably safe. Should the FCO advise against travel for any reason, we will contact everyone booked to travel to discuss the situation. We receive regular updates direct from the FCO and are in constant touch with our contacts on the ground. If you have any questions about government travel advice, please call our office. Single Use Plastic KE do not encourage the use of single use plastic items. We are ensuring that our agents all over the world are working together to reduce the problem and educate those around them. We are leading by example in our KE office by reducing our plastic use. We make sure that our local staff are well treated and well paid, we respect indigenous cultures, take care to protect the environment of the places we visit and take every opportunity to make a positive contribution

PAGE 12 wherever we travel. Our philosophy of 'leaving nothing but footprints' has been integral to KE's approach right from the start over 30 years ago. In recognition of our efforts we are proud to have achieved the highest award of 5 Stars for Sustainable Tourism by AITO. We continue to travel responsibly, and more information on our policy, practice, and specific projects can be found at and on the website of our partner charity the Juniper Trust: KE's Mountain Code is issued to our staff, trek leaders and overseas agents, and we recommend it to our clients, too! Booking Your Holiday The easiest way to make your booking is online. You will need to pay a deposit at the time of booking. This is normally 200 but for some holidays with special permit fees or internal flights, this may be more. Adventure Travel Insurance It is a condition of joining any of our trips that you are insured against medical and personal accident risks (to include repatriation costs, air ambulance and helicopter rescue services). We also strongly recommend that you take out holiday cancellation insurance, as all deposits paid are non-refundable. Please ensure that your insurer is aware of your KE Adventure itinerary and can agree to cover the activities being undertaken.
