INTRODUCTION: PARATY Paraty is a small town which is located at the south cost of Rio de Janeiro; it has developed in a number of ways particularly in tourism which is now its biggest source of income. It not only makes the town an attraction but it also creates an enormous amount of jobs. If it wasn t for tourism the town wouldn t be able to sustain it s wealth and would collapse, tourism also brought the town back to life after rodovia BR 101 was built in 1957 and made a change towards Paraty. Paraty is a cidade histórica which is preserved by the Brazilian government, It was founded in 1540/1560 (there is no precise date). Its structures and buildings cannot be modified on the outside, only in the inside, Also cars are not allowed on the medieval part of the town which initiates a preservative idea of the town. Paraty is not only a touristic place in which the only touristic activities take place, but it also has its own festivals which local people organise. This also brings more to Paraty making it more involved with the modern world. The main objective of the field trip was to discover the impacts of tourism whether it was positive or negative. I have done a variety of researches including interviews, sketch maps, visited museums, the port, the fort, made a map of land uses and visited an ecological island (which is very visited by schools). What mainly makes Paraty a touristic point in Brazil is the historical sights, buildings and monuments such as: Igreja de Santa Rita; Matriz de nossa Senhora dos Remedios; Capela de Santa Cruz; casa da cultura; passos da paixão, chafariz da pedreira; santa casa da misericórdia; quartel da fortaleza da patitiba / cadeia publica; capela de N.S das Dores (capelinha); Igreja de são Benedito e NS do rosário.
HYPOTETHIS: Tourism has both positive and negative impacts, but let s starts by the positive ones. After the Estrada real was built (which took the gold directly from Minas Gerais to Rio do Janeiro, to be sent to Portugal) Paraty was lost in an economic isolation. But after the Estrada BR 101 or Rio Santos was built paraty came back to life this happened because of the major road passing through it, it was a lot easier for people to reach it. Another good impact of tourism is that it generates the towns wealth, keeping it balanced. Tourism also creates the majority of jobs if not all of them making the town a good place for company s to invest in creating either tours or even adventures activities like scuba diving mountain biking and etc. on the other hand there have been negative impacts on tourism for example, company s being interested on buying museums or buildings and wanting to change them illegally. There are also are people which do not care about the nature of the place and litter the town. Overall I think that tourism has had a positive impact on Paraty. METHODOLOGY: METHOD Land use map questionnaires How was the data collected collected by going into specific streets and observing every building, and try to discover what type of building was it whether it was commercial or residential e etc. and we would also ask local people. collected by asking people around several questions (if they are locals/tourists how did they come to paraty etc.) we would go to different areas of the town so we would get 2 different sets of results. Justification of methods-why was the data collected using this method. This was the method I used because it was the best method I could find and also I had to things to rely on: my observation and locals people knowledge about the place. collected this way because this way we can get two different points of view. Because if we only on went on one area of the town we would only get one perspective of what you want. Limitations of method/ what problems were encountered? Some times when I would look at a building I wouldn t know what it was and there some places that I went in which people didn t know what the buildings use was. Maybe we did not ask questions with enough detail and not enough questions. Possible improvements to method / data collection What I could do to improve my method was to maybe knock on the buildings door if it was closed and find out with a more precise result. We could have thought about better and more complex questions
tourism.info mainly collected by taking hotel pamphlets but also going online and looking at guide sites collected like this because it was mainly one oh the only options we had to choose and also it showed us the data we needed. When we collected the pamphlets we noticed that on different areas the information on the pamphlets were different Look deeper into pamphlets and maybe also search more online. DATA PRESENTATION: paraty tourism 15% 15% positive negative 85%
100% How did you come to paraty 90% 80% 70% 60% 50% 40% How did you come to paraty 30% 20% 10% 0% live here Car Bus Cruise boat ARE YOU HERE AS : 3,6 5 tourist (brazilian) tourist (foreign) local resident 1,4
PUBLIC BUILDINGS OF HISTORIC/TOURIST INTEREST: MUSEUMS, CHURCH, ARTS CENTRE, ETC = BLACK RESTAURANT, CAFÉ, BARS = RED SUVENIOUR SHOPS = GREEN OTHER NON RELATED TOURIST BUILDINGS = BLUE TOURISTS ACCOMODATIONS = ORANGE PRIVATE RESIDENCES = PURPLE
CHART ANALYSIS: 1. Chart one shows what people think about tourism in Paraty. This data was collected by using a questionnaire with specific questions which were handed to us at the beginning of the research.(this information was complementary for this project) 2. Chart two shows how people reached Paraty whether it was using public transport or cars, helicopter, cruise boat and etc. the data was also collected by using a questionnaire. This information is useful because it can give us an idea of how most of the people travelled to paraty. 3. Chart three demonstrates the different types of people, whether they are foreign tourists or Brazilian tourists or local residents. Again the data was also collected by using a questionnaire. This chart is useful because it shows that even though paraty is a small town there are outsiders from other countries which visit it 4. The land use map is one of the most important pieces of information in this project, because it shows how paraty is structured and also how it changed by time. In the 16 th century paraty wasn t used for commercializing, it was only used as a place to live in and this proves that it changed quite intensely. If you look carefully at the land use map you will notice that the predominant land use is restaurants and bars, suveniour shops and private properties. According to all the data presented on the charts, methodology and etc. I have come to a conclusion that tourism in paraty has had a more positive effect than negative because it kind of changed the town to better. But there also are the negative effects, e.g.: because of some tourists and local resident s paraty became dirtier and in some places it smells bad and etc. I know all of this because of all of the data I collected while I was the town. In my opinion paraty without its businesses wouldn t be able to stand and would probably collapse. Everyone would stop visiting It, Which would result in people losing their jobs and being forced to move into a more urban area such as Rio de Janeiro or Sao Paulo and they would end up at ghettos which is very common to happen in Brazil.
CONCLUSION: Gathering all the data I have collected I find it fitting to say that tourism has had a good impact on paraty, and also it has changed lots of lives for people which didn t have a choice of work. Although the data collection was very detailed it could improve immensely by maybe going into different areas of paraty to gather maybe different points of views, also I could have searched more on the internet and also gather more pamphlets. The study could have improved if we had more time to do questionnaires and also if we could have gone all over paraty it would have helped us. But over all I thought that this was a great study and a useful piece of information to a historian or geographer which wants to study about paraty.
