WEATHER October to April are the warmer summer months, while May to October is colder. The Chilean climate varies considerably according to latitude, being dry and hot in the north, wet and windy in the south. The coastal areas are cooled by the cold Humboldt current. In the south, the most settled weather is between December and March, which is dominated by westerly winds. In this area, northerly winds usually bring rain and poor visibility, while southerlies are accompanied by clear skies. Best Cruising Months Patagonia: October through March Antarctica: December through February
PATAGONIA WEATHER, NAVIGATION, ANCHORAGES WEATHER At the height of the southern summer, temperatures can reach C / F and the Pilot Charts for the area show winds averaging 25 knots and exceeding gale force one day in five or six comparable to Ireland in the winter. Katabatic gusts blast downward off the snowcapped, rocky mountains in hurricane-force rachas or williwaws. Parts of the Pacific coastline experience more than 300 days of precipitation per year. NAVIGATION Most of the navigation in Patagonia can be done in the protected channels and fjords. The channels tend to be very deep, a hundred meters or more for the most part. Kelp seen just below the surface indicates depths of 10 meters or less and by staying just outside the kelp line, yachts can be sure of having sufficient depths to enter an anchorage. During the summer months most of the channels are ice free, however you will encounter ice in the fjords leading to and from glaciers. ANCHORAGES The Chilean fjords are a paradise of unspoiled anchorages. Many anchorages are subject to williwaws or rachas, therefore tress are a good indication of suitable anchorages. Over-sized ground tackle and an easy way to deploy shorelines constitutes the single most important set of equipment to ensure safety in the channels, as does keeping a watchful weather eye. The anchorages in the countless fjords provide a safe shelter for bad weather windows.
PILOTAGE Pilotage is compulsory for all foreign flagships navigating inland waterways and channels south of Puerto Montt and in the Strait of Magellan. Ordering of pilotage must be made through an agency at least 72 hours in advance. There are two types of pilotage Pilots to assist port maneuvers Compulsory above 50 GRT Pilots to assist channel navigation < 200 GRT: no pilotage needed GRT: can request pilotage exemption through agent > 500 GRT: compulsory 2 pilots Piloting fees are charged according to vessel's GRT and are established by government. Pilots are transferred at designated Pilot Stations or other place if requested by agent. Pilot s assistance to Chilean Antarctica can also be provided. Pilots are experienced former Merchant Masters and retired Navy Senior Officers, therefore they should be treated as Captains. Masters are kindly requested to provide one cabin per pilot, located in officer s area, and allow free access to officer s quarters, mess and entertainment areas. During navigation in inner waters, channels and fjords, in pilotage area, pilots will stand on duty in 5-hour watches. Pilots PPUs have approved software for navigation in Chilean waters.
SAFETY IN CHILE & PATAGONIA Chile is among the safest countries in South America, according to the Global Peace Index. USA TODAY According to TRAVEL + LEISURE Magazine, Chile ranks #7 as best country for solo travelers, with a general safety ranking of 30 from 162 countries. Cruisers report that security in Tierra del Fuego is just simply not an issue. Many never lock their boats and dinghies with outboards can be left at the jetty without any problems. Chile is not a target for terrorists. Chile has not had any known reports of piracy in the last two centuries.

TESTIMONIALS "Thank you for your professional assistance during SY Fidelis present world tour and specifically the circumnavigation of South America. All port formalities, berth and fuel arrangements, provisioning and guest/crew tours, extra guides and transport / accommodation requirements were met and all operations ran extremely smoothly thanks to your professional experience and assistance. The owners, crew and myself thank you again for making this exciting exploration cruise a complete success SY Fidelis I can confirm that Tomas Miranda did an excellent job for us in Chile. Our tour was exceptional Tomas was incredibly adaptable to our ever changing circumstances. He assisted in all areas from route planning, pilotage, provisions, customs, clearance, repairs, transport and many other services. The benefit Tomas has is he has worked in the industry and fully understands the demands of private yachts. I would fully recommend him to any other boats making that trip around the South of America. SY Ahimsa We cruised intensively through the Chilean channels of Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego. We worked with SASYSS for a couple of months. It was good to find that Tomás and his team were always at the end of a phone and perfectly organized all authorities during our various passages through Chile. All documents and officials were preorganized and sorted, saving us much time and/or frustration. With other services, such as fuel or finding contractors (even on Christmas day), the team came through in fine form. It was very useful to have Tomás as an ally to successfully barter with the Chilean navy and iron out any wrinkles before we returned to Port Williams. SY Pumula

ANTARCTICA & SOUTH GEORGIA Antarctica is one of the most challenging yachting experience, but also one of the most rewarding ones, a mystical place where visitors will be surrounded by some of the most magical landscapes on the planet, icebergs and unique wildlife of penguins, seals, whales and many other animals. Point of arrival is King George Island which is a couple of days navigation from Patagonia or a few hours flight from Chile. Surprisingly mild temperatures for its latitude and round-the-clock sunlight of the Austral summer allow wildlife viewing during many hours. On your way to or from Antarctica, explore some other islands of the Southern Ocean such as South Georgia or the Falkland Islands.
EASTER ISLAND & ROBINSON CRUSOE ISLAND EASTER ISLAND, lying at the south-eastern point of the Polynesian triangle, yachts are increasingly visiting this isolated island off the Chilean coast. The island is famous for its Moais and is an interesting stopover for yachts sailing east or west in the Southern Pacific. Easter Island can also be reached by commercial and private flights from Santiago, Chile. ROBINSON CRUSOE ISLAND is the second largest of the Juan Fernández Islands. It is the more populous of the inhabited islands in the archipelago. The island was home to the marooned sailor Alexander Selkirk from 1704 to 1709 and inspired Daniel Defoe's 1719 novel. Activities include hiking, horseback riding and diving with seals and to the remains of the SMS Dresden scuttled during WW I.
