We take a leadership role in assisting alpaca enthusiasts to reach their full potential through networking, marketing, and nurturing. Our Goals and Objectives Our meetings inform members of up-coming events, available resources, and marketing strategies with guidance in a supportive, friendly atmosphere. Our intent is to promote healthy, thriving ranches and farms through education, friendship and joint marketing. We will actively pursue various means of communication and group development to fulfill our Mission Statement (i.e. educate, promote, and develop). 4 About Suri About Huacayas The Suri (sir-ee) alpaca, which makes up approximately 10% of the herd in North America, is distinguished from the Huacaya alpaca by its unique fiber characteristics. The fiber grows parallel to the body and hangs in long, separate, non-crimped locks. Suri fiber locks are made up of high luster fibers. The fleece drapes down the sides of the body in a twisted or flat form. Suri fiber has excellent luster, a slick hand and extreme softness. Alpaca fiber is a protein and has the same basic structural characteristics as other wools, but there are fewer scales in alpaca fiber than in sheep wool. This makes alpaca fiber less elastic than sheep wool, but also lessens the itch factor. Many people who are irritated by sheep wool can comfortably wear alpaca. Jack s Princeton ARI# Suri fiber, while also able to be spun into beautiful yarn is best suited for lacey weight scarves, shawls or, more commonly, woven into cloth and used in suitings or outerwear. The weaving process holds the slippery Suri yarn between the weft and warp creating a strong fabric with luster and buttery softness. A suit made from Suri fiber is a delight to see, feel and wear. The Huacaya has crimpy fiber which grows out from the body giving it a rounded, fluffy appearance. The average length of Huacaya fiber is 3 to 5 inches. Huacaya fiber is the most popular type of alpaca, as it is easily spun and woven. The natural crimp of the fiber spins a tight yet lofty strand and keeps its tensile strength. Huacaya fiber is soft, luxurious with a feel like no other fiber. Jax Kingpin ARI# Both fiber types blend beautifully with silk, cotton, angora, wool, and many other fibers. Alpaca, either type, is sheer elegance! Alpacas come in two fiber types - Huacaya and Suri. The fiber of the Huacaya (pronounced wah-kaiyuh) alpaca is dense, crimped and wooly in appearance. This abundant coverage gives the Huacaya a soft and huggable look and explains its overwhelming popularity worldwide.
