Its total area is 295 ha. The territory of the Reserve is mainly flat located at 40 m above sea level. The river Rioni flows through the Katsoburi Managed Nature Reserve. The underground waters are abundant in the Reserve creating bogs at some places. Floristic diversity: In the past the Reserve was covered with Colchicum forests. Presently, the flora of the Reserve mainly consists of alder (Alnus barbata) grooves; among the forest-making species are also wingnut (Pterocarya pterocarpa) and Ash tree (Fraxinus excelsior). Mimosa (Acacia dealbata), Goat willow (Salix caprea), pear (Pyrus caucasica), wild plum (Prunus divaricata), oleaster (Elaeagnus angustifolia )and indigo bush (Amorpha fruticosa) are widespread on the territory of the reserve. Fauna: Katsoburi Managed Nature Reserve is poor in fauna. Among hoofed animals here can be found Wild boar (Sus scrofa), Roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), wolf (Canis lupus), hare (Lepus europiacus), jackal (Canis aureus), badger (Meles meles), Wild cat (Felis silvestris) and otter (Lutra lutra). Contact information: Administration Building of Katsoburi Managed Reserve Katsoburi, Abasha district Tel.: Kolkheti National Park Location: Kolkheti National Park is located in five administrative districts of Georgia Zugdidi, Khobis, Senaki, Abasha of the Samegrelo region and Lanchkuti of the Guria region. It covers the eastern coastal zone of the Black Sea and the lake Paliastomi. Status: National Park (II category World Conservation Union - IUCN protected areas categories) Distance from Tbilisi: 330 km General description: The Park was established in 1998 with the purpose to protect wetland ecosystems. The total land area of the Park is 28571ha and the water area 15742ha. It consists of separate territories the districts: Anaklia-Churia (between the coastline sections of ravines of the river Churia and the river Khobistskali with the area of ha), Nabada (between the western sections of the ravines of the river Khobistskali and the river Rioni with the area of ha) and Imnati (between the western sections of the ravines of the rioni Rioni and the river Supsa with the area ha). These are the areas where the ecosystems of wetlands are best preserved. The lake Paliastomi of the Park is the ideal environment for many species of fish and invertebrates. Kolkheti wetlands are important for their floristic diversity of relict origin. This lowland is a remainder of the tropical and subtropical landscapes preserved till today, which were stretched along entire Eurasian continent as continuous belt in Cenozoic age about 10 million years ago. In Kolkheti the plants have been preserved that are nowadays characteristic only for swampy ecosystems of tundra and taiga of the North. Due to its uniqueness, Colchis wetlands ecosystems were given a status of international importance under the Ramsar Convention in Floristic diversity: The coastal peat bogs of the Park are home to Boreal species alien for Kolkheti: Sphagnum mosses (Spagnum imbricatum, Sp. palustre, Sp. acutiflium), Round-leaved sundew (Drosera rotundifolia), Woollyfruit sedge (Carex lasiocarpa). Plants of alpine zone, such as Yellow-flowered rhododendron (Rhododendron flavum) and Pontic rhododendron (Rhododendron ponticum) give the bogs special appearance. Swampy and humid forests are composed of: Alder trees (Alnus barbata), Caucasian wingnut (Pterocarya pterocarpa), Imeretian oak (Quercus imeretina), Colchis oak (Quercus hartwissiana), Georgian oak (Quercus iberica), Colchis box-tree (Buxus colchica), Maple (Fraxinus exscelsior), with well-developed evergreen underbrush Colchis ivy (Hedera colchica). In the sandy zone of dunes grow Jerusalem thorn (Paliurus spina-christi), Hawthorn (Crataegus), Seabuckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides), Spurge (Euphorbia), Eringo (Eringium coeruleum), Colchis sedge (Carex colchica), Imeretian cogongrass (Imperata cylindrica), Astragalus (Astragalus caucasicus), Marsh woundwort (Stachys palustris), Catchfly (Silene) etc. Along the lakes and marsh rivers in the wetlands can be found the following plants: Colchis water-lily (Nymphaea colchica) and Yellow waterlily (Nuphar lutea), Colchis water chestnut (Trapa colchica) and Lesser duckweed (Lemna minor), and in the peat bogs together with the north tundra species you can find Royal fern (Osmunda regalis) and Imeretian sedge (Molionia litoralis). In the Park one can meet species included in the Red Data Book of Georgia e.g. Yellow poppy (Galucium flavum) and Water lily (Nymphaea colchica). Composition of species of algae is diverse.

4 Fauna: Among large mammals in the swampy floodplains, forests and shrubs of Kolkheti there can be found: jackal (Canis aureus) and Wild boar (Sus scrofa), Roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) and otter (Lutra lutra). The marine mammals are presented by 3 species of dolphins, such as: Aphalina the Bottle-nose Dolphin (Tursiops truncatus), White-sided Dolphin (Lagenorhynchus acutus) and Herring hog (Phocoena phocoena). In total 194 species of birds inhabit the Kolkheti National Park. The route of the annual migration of the birds crosses this territory. For millions of birds that migrate in autumn from the north to the south and in spring from warm countries to their nesting places, the uninhabited bogs are ideal places for having a rest during a long distance migration, and for birds of different species Kolkheti is the place where they spend winter. The following bird species can be found in the Park: small Watercocks (Gallicrex cinerea), Herons, Common Buzzards (Buteo buteo), Black Kites (Milvus migrans), Common Kestrels (Falco tinnunculus) and Lesser Kestrels (Falco naumanni), Eurasian Hobbies (Falco subbuteo), European Honey-Buzzards (Pernis apivorus), White-tailed Eagles (Haliaeetus albicilla), Steppe Eagles (Aquila nipalensis) and Imperial Eagles (Aquila heliaca), woodcock (Scolopax), Eurasian Curlews (Numenius arquata), White-fronted Goose (Anser albifrons), Mute Swan (Cygnus olor) and Whooper Swan (Cygnus cygnus), Dalmatian Pelican (Pelecanus crispus), Greater Spotted Eagle (Aquila clanga), Black Stork (Ciconia Nigra), Crane (Grus grus), Great White Egret (Egretta alba), etc. Colchis pheasant (Phasianus colchicus) can also be found here. In these cities transport system is well developed with airports, motor roads and rail lines connected to the main transport artery of the country. Moreover, Poti is one of the main seaports of Georgia. However, despite their transport links, the production in these cities is very poor and mainly includes food production and wood manufacturing. In particular, hazelnut production is of primary importance for the local economy. In Zemo Svaneti the largest hydro power plant in Georgia (Enguri hydro power plant) is located. The plant partially is located on the territory of Abkhazia. The total area of agricultural plots in the Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti region is thousand hectares, of which arable plots cover the territory of 69.6 thousand hectares. The area of 38.4 thousand hectares is assigned to perennial trees, thousand hectares - to natural mow lands and thousand hectares - to pastures. Agriculture is a main sector of the Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti economics. The ratio of Cereals production significantly increased (29.2 thousand ha to 70.2 thousand ha), while the ration of tea production decreased by 91%. Hazelnut growing accounts for most of the agricultural production of Samegrelo. Kiwi, feijoa, citrus, apple, pear, cherry plum and persimmons are also grown in Samegrelo. The population of is mainly engaged in potato growing and animal farming.

8 Population Quantity (11% of the total population of Georgia), Zemo Svaneti population accounts totals 3 %. National structure: 98 Georgians. State of the Environment Responsible body for the regular monitoring of chemical and radiological pollution of air, soil and surface waters is the National Environmental Agency. The Agency is the legal entity of public law in the system of the Ministry of Environment Protection and Natural Resources of Georgia. One of the main duties of the Agency is to prepare and disseminate information on the pollution levels to both state and non-governmental organisations. The contact information of the National Environmental Agency: 150 Agmashenebeli Ave. Tbilisi 0112, Georgia Tel.: +995 (32) ; +995 (32) ; Fax: +995 (32) ; info@environment.ge According to the law on Environment Protection and Presidential decree # 389 of 25 June, 1999 Ministry of Environment Protection and Natural Resources of Georgia is responsible to prepare and make publicly available reports on the state of the environment once in three years. These reports summarise information on the main directions in environmental policy-making of the country and on the quality of the environment, give overview on ongoing environmental projects and the results of the completed ones. The contact information of the Ministry of Environment Protection and Natural Resources of Georgia: 6 Gulua Str. Tbilisi 0114, Georgia Tel.: +995 (32) , Fax: ( ) press@moe.gov.ge Main concerns related to the state of the environment of the region Monitoring of the air pollution is not carried out in the Saemgrelo - Zemo Svaneti region. The data on air pollutants are available only for the stationary sources provided by the enterprises of the region to the Ministry of Environment Protection and Natural Resources of Georgia. The results for the air pollution from the stationary sources is as follows: pollution takes place by particulate matter, SO 2, NO x carbohydrates and CO. Among the main polluter regions (Imereti 40.6%, Kvemo Kartli 23.8%, Adjara 17.1%, Shida Kartli 6.7 %) the share of the Saemgrelo - Zemo Svaneti region is the least making up only 6 %. Due to the fact that animal husbandry is well developed in the region air pollution by non-methane volatile organic compounds, NH 3, CH 4 and H 2 S can also take place. makes significant ratio in the Agricultural sector of the region the source of air pollution Data on quality of the region s surface waters is extremely limited due to the infrequency of monitoring. Local Municipalities are responsible to ensure uninterrupted daily supply of safe drinking water to the population. Drinking water in the region is provided through centralized systems only in towns. Safe drinking water supply is still of a concern mainly due to malfunctioning of the water supply system.

9 River pollution is basically linked with the discharge of untreated wastewater from sewer collectors and industrial discharge. Existing municipal wastewater treatment plants (in Zugdidi and Poti) are out of order and consequently no treatment of municipal waste-water is taking place. As a result the quality of the river Rioni suffers greatly. Untreated water from health centres and hospitals is the source for water pollution of the Kvabliani river. Water quality of rivers of the region is also affected by agricultural runoff. Poti Port contributes to the pollution of the Black Sea coastal line by oil products. Untreated wastewater from sewers discharged directly into the Black Sea is another source of pollution. The region s quality of the environment is heavily effected by the improper management of municipal solid wastes. Illegal dumping of waste near the river banks is of a common practice resulting in polluted adjacent soils and water. Though the region operates 6 legal landfills none of them respond to the existing sanitary norms. For example the obsolete landfill of Poti (with the area 3 ha) is located at the mouth of the river Rioni causing its pollution. Moreover, because of the frequent rains and flooding, the big share of the waste is washed into the Black Sea. Some 180,000 m 3 of waste are being disposed off at the landfill. The landfill receives all types of waste, including biological.
