2 H ow many of you have taken part at the Defi Wind? I guess many! How about the chance to take part at the Defi Wind in transparent waters, and nice warm temperatures, where the food and culture is unique and ready to have you discover a new part of the world? Well Miyako island will be the next stop for next Defi Wind. It will be between end of February and first week of March, and I guess that you can be ready to discover a whole new world and have an amazing adventure, without spending too much money. Japan is one of the countries that many have the dream to visit for its culture, capital, powder snow, and many other mainstream opportunities that the countries is known to offer. I travelled a lot in my life, but I never would have guessed that this corner of Japan was existing. In windsurfing Japan has always been famous as there are a lot of windsurfers, and as in the 90 s there was one of the most prestigious PWA events in Omaezaki, not far from Tokyo. Which area are we talking about? We are discovering for you the southern islands of Japan. Just over two hours flight south of Tokyo. The islands are actually same height or just little east from Taiwan. There is a whole chain of a big number of coral reef pacific islands all belonging to Japan. The main ones and sure the most know, are Okinawa, following Ishigaki. They are the biggest and the first landing islands for most planes to land, to than change to fly to the smaller islands, or actually taking the fast ferries to others. When you are landing to one of these islands, you get a shocker, or at least I did! I was not expecting to see islands looking like the Maldives, or Tahiti in terms of reef and water. A vegetation close to the one of Hawaii. Waves hitting the reef, crystal water around all the islands, and white sandy beaches, that get too bright to look at without sun glasses. I had been to this place already once two years ago. I remember landing in Tokyo with 5 C in January and then arriving on the island of Ishigaki with C. At that time my trip continued by one hour fast boat to Kohama island. Amazing resort on a golf course placed on top of the windsurfing spot. I had been invited by my Japanese distributor to take part at the Miyako Classic. An event on Miyako Island for all class of windsurfers. From beginners to experts. I was shocked on the similarities there were from Maui in some areas of the island, but also on how many different things it was offering. The flight was direct from Tokyo to Miyako and the whole trip is not so expensive. If you book early you might find out that the return ticket is even less than 600 euros. It s a good chance to take also your girlfriend or wife to this place as she will love it. It s warm and the beach is beautiful and food amazing. The life once there is not more expensive than what we are used to. It s a very affordable holiday. It would be a mix between discovering a very different area of the world, meeting the Japanese kindness and culture, windsurfing in amazing spots. Going back to Miyako island, there is a lot to visit on the island. It s connected with big bridges to different islands which offer great sightseeing, snorkelling and sup excursions, surfing, golfing, biking around the island and much more. You can eat every night at different type of restaurants to taste the Japanese food. Sushi is only one of the many which Japanese cuisine can offer and the towns are open 24h. I m sure I will go to the event, as the place really is worth the effort to go there. It s a great place to run away from cold Europe, warm up the bones and have lots of fun! «Andrea CUCCHI»

4 MIYAKO ISLAND Miyako Island (Miyakojima), located 300 kilometers south of Okinawa Main Island and 100 kilometers north of the Yaeyama Islands, is known for some of Japan s best beaches and as a great destination for snorkeling and diving in the coral reefs. The sub tropical climate provides mild weather year around. Access and Orientation Miyako Airport has direct flights to Tokyo s Haneda Airport (2.5 to 3 hours), Osaka s Kansai Airport (2 hours), Naha Airport on Okinawa Main Island (45 minutes), Ishigaki (30 minutes) and Tarama (20 minutes), a small island between Miyako and Ishigaki. Air passes can provide big savings on the Tokyo and Osaka routes. Enjoy wind surfing, kite surfing, and SUP on the island that is just about on identical latitude as its sister city, the island of Maui. The venue takes place at the Maehama beach which is known to have East Asia s most beautiful shore while the race kicks off at the Nishihama beach. Gather for this wonderful event not only to compete, but to experience the beauty of Miyakojima

8 admission THE DEFI WIND JAPAN IS A NEW LONG DISTANCE RACE (20 KM MINI) ORGANIZED FOR ALL, PROS AND AMATEURS. 150 ENTRIES ARE POSSIBLE FOR THIS FIRST EDITION 2019 NEVERTHELESS YOU ARE THE ONLY ONE WHO CAN JUDGE IF YOU ARE ABLE OR NOT TO RUN IN THE CONDITIONS YOU COULD MEET IN MIYAKO ISLAND. TO LAUNCH AN OFFICIAL RACE, THE AVERAGE WIND MUST BE OVER 12 KNOTS MINIMUM & 25 KNOTS MAXIMUM. > REGISTRATION 150 entries availables for 2019 Entry fees are x 150 > MINIMUM AGE At least 13 years old on the event date > INSURANCE You must have an individual international personal insurance > IDENTIFICATION OF PARTICIPANTS The identification of the participants is established by assigning an unique and personal numbered bib. An identity document is required. > PARENTAL AUTHORIZATION Mandatory form for minors (- 18). A responsible adult will have to be identified in the parental authorization. 9 rules > PRIORITY SAFETY Beyond the rules of priority, every rider has to do his best to avoid a collision. Some official rules: - On the same way, the one who overtake has to stay away from the one who is overtaken. - On different ways, the one who is port side (left hand near the mast) has to stay away from the one who is starboard (right hand near the mast). > THE ARRIVAL It is judged by the arrival boat and a buoy just behind. You have to go between the back of the arrival boat and the buoy. > THE SIGN IN AND SIGN OUT, BEFORE AND AFTER THE RACE IS COMPULSORY You have to sign at the signature table EQUIPED WITH YOUR NUMBERED BIB before you start running. You have to sign again when you are back, even if you have given up. This system allows us to know who is back and if we have to go and look for you in the water. An outsider is NOT allowed to sign for you. Caution: the no-respect of the start or back signature brings the permanent exclusion of the Defi Wind. > THE EQUIPMENT - An isothermal wetsuit is compulsory for everyone (at least 2mm Top). - An life jacket is compulsory for everyone - You have to wear your numbered bib over all other equipment (bag, camel bag ). The number has to be legible as long as you run; it is the only way for the organization to identify you. - You have to carry a 3 meters long of rope (minimum 4 mm of diameter) in order to hang up easily to a boat or a buoy. - The weighty vest is forbidden. > THE RACE Crosswind or Downwind of approximatively 20km. There is no maximum distance! > THE LIMIT TIME No limit time. For the security of everyone, the organization can take the decision to stop the last participant. > THE DISCARDS Only one discard will be retained from 4 run races and whatever the final number of races. > THE START It is a rabbit start. You have to cross the line after the rabbit (the start boat). The count of the starting procedure (H-60 ) is announced on the beach. > THE JURY It is the king, and will do its best for everyone to have fun, for the spirit of the Defi Wind to be expressed and for you to respect it. > CATEGORIES MEN WOMEN YOUNG ( under 18 ) > RANKING - By gender, all categories - By categories - By points First = 0.7 pts Second & following up = place (2nd = 2 points, ) Abandon = Number of participants + 1 Do not start = Number of participants + 2 Disqualified = Number of participants + 5
