1 Worcester Academy Latin Immersion 2019 ROME v. October 16, 2018-FAM EdOdyssey creates one-of-a-kind, fully customizable immersion trips for schools. This program has been designed for Worcester Academy Latin students and faculty to complement the curriculum. Students will gain invaluable insight into the history and rich cultural heritage of the amazing city of Rome. This trip is open to all students studying Latin in grades Program webpage: DAY 1 - TBD; SPRING BREAK 2019 (BOSTON TO ROME) All day Fly from Boston (BOS) to Rome (MAD) - depart March 8 or 9, 2018 Exact flight schedules to be determined Welcome to Rome! Check-in at Suore Salesiane dei Sacri Cuori (Via Guicciardini, 4) Italy s capital is a heady mix of ancient ruins, awe-inspiring art and vibrant street life; it s easily one of the world s most breathtaking cities. You ll spend the week exploring Rome s history, cuisine, art, and culture. Buon divertimento! DAY 2 - SCENIC STROLL OF THE HISTORIC CENTER (ROME) Morning: Welcome / Group Orientation Introduction to the historic center Rome s historic center is rich in bustling piazzas, cobblestone alleyways, Renaissance palazzos and Baroque architecture. It s also home to some of the capital s biggest attractions, including the Spanish Steps and the Pantheon. Tangles of boutiques, bars, restaurants, and shops also call the centro storico home. Your walk will start at Porta del Popolo, once one of the ports of ancient Rome. Inside you ll find Piazza del Popolo, home to the Egyptian obelisk of Sety I, the tallest and oldest and second tallest obelisk in Rome. It was brought to Rome in 10BC by Augustus. Next, you ll see the Spanish Steps, a 135 step staircase completed in At its base is the early Baroque Fontana della Baraccia, designed by Bernini. Next, you ll visit the Pantheon, a 2,000 year old former Roman temple that is 1

2 now a church. It s the final resting place of painter Raphael and is the world s largest unreinforced dome. Continue on to Piazza Navona, whose grand centerpieces include Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi, featuring an Egyptian obelisk. Lunch at Sacro e Profano 11, a deconsecrated church turned restaurant After lunch we ll visit arguably the most famous fountain in the world, the Trevi Fountain. Tradition requires that visitors toss a coin into its famed waters to ensure a return to the Eternal City. Fun fact: The fountain collects over 3,000 euro a day (Via dei Maroniti, 29). Evening: Dinner at Trattoria da Danilo: family style primo e secondo Cacio e pepe with meatball, for example! DAY 3 - COLOSSEUM, CIRCO MASSIMO AND ROMAN FORUM (ROME) Morning Visit & Tour of the Colosseum Rome s greatest gladiatorial arena was inaugurated in 80 AD and at its peak hosted 50,000 spectators who came to watch gladiators duke it out with each other or with wild animals. Circo Massimo & Roman Forum Next you ll explore two Circo Massimo, meanwhile, was once home ancient Rome s largest chariot racetrack. The Roman Forum was in its heyday a chaotic district of temples, basilicas, markets, and public spaces. It dates back to the 7th-century BC. DAY 4 - ST. PETER S BASILICA Morning Visit to St. Peter s Basilica* St. Peter s Basilica is not just the largest church in Italy, but the largest church in the world. It includes Michelangelo s Pietà, his soaring dome, and Bernini s baldachin over the papal altar. *Strict dress codes are enforced: no mini skirts, shorts, or bared shoulders are allowed. Visit to St. Peter s Tomb/Vatican Grottoes if possible 2

3 In the 4th-century, Constantine became the first emperor to embrace Christianity and had a church built on the site of St. Peter s grave. The original basilica was replaced by the Renaissance St. Peter s Basilica which you ve just toured. Very few people are allowed to tour the burial area below the basilica. Besides St. Peter s remains are here according to some scholars; others believe they are not. Many other popes also chose to be buried directly underneath the altar. Lunch at Be.Re of Trapizzini, classic Roman street food sandwiches Vatican Museums + Sistine Chapel After refueling, you ll venture inside the Vatican Museums. Founded by Pope Julius II in the early 16th-century, the Museums boast one of the world s greatest and most illustrious art collections. Exhibits range from Egyptian mummies to Etruscan bronzes to rooms frescoed by Raphael. The jewel of the Museums is of course the Sistine Chapel, home to Michelangelo s frescoes and the The Last Judgement (completed in 1541). Dinner DAY 5 - CHURCH HOPPING + COOKING CLASS Morning: Today you ll tour Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano. Commissioned by Constantine and consecrated in AD 324, it was the first Christian basilica built in the city and, until the late 14th century, was the pope s main place of worship. It's still Rome s official cathedral and the pope s seat as the bishop of Rome. Next you ll walk to Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, a 5th-century church that is one of Rome s 4 patriarchal basilicas. Glimmering 13th-century mosaics are found inside, along with the tomb of painter Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Evening: Lunch at Mercato Centrale inside Termini Station. Here Rome s best food vendors come together and have their own stands: you ll find Neapolitan oven-baked pizza, fresh sushi, panini, homemade pasta, and more. Cooking Class - you ll make fresh gnocchi and tiramisu and eat what you prepare! DAY 6 - OFF THE BEATEN PATH: THE TESTACCIO NEIGHBORHOOD Morning: Breakfast at hotel Visit to the Testaccio Neighborhood 3

4 Testaccio may not be Rome s prettiest neighborhood, but its rich history more than makes up for it. In antiquity, the district was home to the Emporium port, where the bulk of the Romans food supply funneled into the city. Olive oil, grains, and other essential foodstuffs arrived in terracotta vessels called amphorae, and once emptied were disposed of in an outdoor dumpsite. The ancient Monte dei Cocci, or Monte Testaccio hill, composed of around 53 million broken amphorae, still looms today. Centuries later, Testaccio housed Europe s biggest abattoir, giving rise to rustic, Roman dishes like trippa alla romana and oxtail stew. And It was in this neighborhood that the city s beloved team, AS Roma, had their first football pitch, and where rowdy locals still gather to take in a match. Nowadays, Testaccio is hailed as a bastion of Roman culinary excellence, home to some of the Capital s best eateries. We ll visit: 1. The ancient Pyramid and Non-Catholic cemetery, where the Romantic poet John Keats is buried. 2. The Mercato Testaccio 3. Lunch at Flavio al Velavevodetto 4. Gelato at Giolitti Dinner DAY 7- (ROME TO BOSTON) All day: Breakfast at the hotel, meet in the lobby, say good-bye to new friends and travel to the airport! Fly from Rome to Boston Exact flight schedule to be determined. TO BE DETERMINED: School visit to local lower/middle school. Details on the time of the visit are still being worked out, but students will have the opportunity to spend part of a day with local students, volunteer and gain an glimpse into a typical Italian school. This portion of the program will be eligible volunteer hours for WA students 4

5 Program Fee: The all-inclusive, per participant program fee for WA s Roman Immersion trip is $2,750. USD including international airfare.* With our program fee there are no surprises we promise. Once the program is confirmed, the program fee will not change and it includes just about everything (see below). In order for the program to take place there is a required minimum of ten (10) voyagers. In order to keep the program intimate, there is a maximum of twenty five (25) students. *every effort will be made to book the group on a non-stop itinerary between BOS - FCO / FCO - BOS. Money Matters: We value education, at all costs. We work tirelessly to keep programs affordable for students and their families, but know that does not mean accessible for everyone. We also have a new online platform that allows donations to be credited directly to students. Payment Schedule. The program payment is broken up over time for all families. A deposit is due at the time of registration and the balance is divided in several payments.
