Marbella/Granada Thursday, April 21 Following breakfast in the hotel, depart for a full day excursion to the captivating medieval city of Granada, first occupied by the Moors in the eighth century. From here, monarchs of the Nasrid Dynasty ruled for 250 years over the last Moorish Kingdom of Spain from 1238 to 1492, when artisans, scholars, merchants and scientists within the city flourished, leaving a priceless architectural legacy the magnificent Alhambra, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Walk through its outer precincts, admire the genius of medieval Moorish craftsmen within, then stroll through the beautifully landscaped Generalife Gardens the gardens of the country estate of the Nasrid kings. Originally containing vast orchards and pastures, its name in Arabic translates to the garden of lofty paradise. Enjoy lunch in a local restaurant before returning to the hotel. 3 u 3 Eternal Classics of Rome Post-Cruise Option April 29 to May 1, 2016 The Eternal City of Rome, a UNESCO World Heritage site and capital of the ancient Roman Empire, offers endless opportunities to evoke its long and spectacular past, from the Colosseum to St. Peter s Square. Here, the ancient Romans originated what we now call Western Civilization. Today, ancient Rome blends with the medieval, and the modern era melds with the Renaissance, the result being the world s finest open-air museum. See the city s ancient monuments including the Colosseum and the Roman Forum. Enjoy a tour of St. Peter s Basilica and the Vatican Museums, including the Sistine Chapel. Accommodations for two nights are in the deluxe InterContinental De La Ville Roma Hotel, a 17 th century building overlooking the Spanish Steps. Rome Friday, April 29 Disembark the ship and transfer to Rome for a guided tour of the Vatican Museums inside Vatican City, considered to be among the greatest museums in the world. Admire works from the immense collection built up by the Roman Catholic Church throughout the centuries, including some of the most renowned classical sculptures and most important masterpieces of Renaissance art anywhere. Visit the Sistine Chapel, featuring Michelangelo s best-known work, noted as his crowning achievement. Tour St. Peter s Basilica, the late-renaissance church that has the largest interior of any Christian church in the world and has been described as the greatest of all churches of Christendom. In Roman Catholic tradition, the basilica is the burial site of its namesake Saint Peter, whose tomb is directly under the altar of the basilica in the grottos below. Continue underground to the grottos, where popes have been interred since the Early Christian period. Construction of the present basilica, over the original fourth-century Constantinian basilica, began in 1506 and was completed in St. Peter s is famous for its associations with the papacy, the Counter Reformation and numerous artists including Michelangelo and Raphael. Built for Roman emperors in A.D. 80, the Colosseum held gladiatorial spectacles for almost 400 years. A spectacular work of architecture, it is regarded as the greatest building of its age.
