Check in at the hotel, located in the heart of Beijing. (MEALS ALOFT) Accommodations at the Grand Hotel September 1 BEIJING After breakfast, begin your China exploration with a welcome orientation by your tour director. Classical China beckons outside the hotel and nearby is the imperial architectural axis that runs from Qianmen Gate, through the grand halls of the Forbidden City, to Jingshan Hill. This line demarcates the center of the Chinese universe, which is to say; all things cultural, social, political, and spiritual find their source here. Take an early-morning walk to Changpuhe Park and observe local residents practicing taiji and qigong. This lovely garden features traditional buildings and pavilions facing onto Chinese gardens, one of the most successful new gardens in the country. Within a matter of minutes, arrive at Tiananmen Square for a walk and group picture. Later, enter the gates of the Forbidden City, the abiding symbol of imperial China. Truly one of the great achievements of civilization, its construction employed hundreds of thousands of workers between 1406 and Marvel at its expansive architecture, magnificent imperial gardens, and many museums of Chinese antiquities and treasures. Lunch is at Ken de Rouge Restaurant. Designed by well-known Chinese architect, Gu Peng, Ken de Rouge features the finest fusion cuisine with beautiful ambiance and a treelined lake view. After lunch, stop by the Olympic Village and marvel at the new stadiums made famous by the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Herzog & de Meuron designed the National Stadium, the Bird s Nest, and the firm PTW designed the National Swimming Centre, the Water Cube. Next, explore the Temple of Heaven, one of the finest creations of the Ming Dynasty. This stunning architecture realizes the great Chinese desire to incarnate heaven in material form, and represents the most advanced principles of mechanics and geometry of the time. This evening, savor the imperial city s most famous delicacy, Peking duck at the renowned Da Dong Restaurant. (B,L,D) Breakfast (B), Lunch (L) and Dinner (D) are included in the day s program. September 2 BEIJING After breakfast, tour the newly renovated National Museum by Tiananmen Square, the largest museum in the world. The renovation features an astounding entry hall, one of the most impressive interior spaces ever attempted, with its towering elevations of stone covered pillars. Then explore Beijing s picturesque Houhai district, where well-preserved courtyard homes and narrow hutong alleys border tree-lined lakes. Tour the district by pedicab for a closer and more engaging experience of traditional Chinese life. Divide into small groups and enjoy lunch at a local family s home. Afterwards, tour the Great Wall of China. Encounter this extraordinary rampart at Mutianyu, a rugged section of the Wall that is less crowded and offers easy access by foot or cable car. Enjoy the astounding views of the Wall as it winds over the surrounding hills. The Great Wall presents a visual experience that consistently exceeds visitors expectations. Tonight the evening is free and dinner is on one s own. (B,L) September 3 BEIJING LIJIANG In the morning, fly from Beijing to Lijiang with a light lunch served on board. Upon arrival, enjoy a walking tour of the Lijiang historic district, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and considered the most charming traditional city in China today. The minority Naxi and Bai people here have
7 preserved their distinctive culture and lifestyle. Serpentine lanes and stone bridges connect tiny alleyways to quaint courtyard homes. The wooden architecture creates a world of its own and the craft shops display wonderful ethnic skills. (B,L) Accommodations at the Crowne Plaza Hotel September 4 LIJIANG This morning, visit Heilongtan Park, known for its spectacular views of snow-capped Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, the largest glacier in southwestern China. Tour the Dongba Research Institute and the museum of Naxi Dongba Culture. Afterwards, proceed to Yuhu Village to visit the home of the famous American photographer and writer Joseph Rock. Rock worked as a correspondent for National Geographic and lived here from the 1920 s through the 1940 s. Collecting wild rhododendrons and azaleas seeds, he sent his collections to the U.S. where they have become colorful additions to American parks and homes. In the afternoon, admire the lovely mural paintings from the Ming dynasty in the ancient Baisha Temple. Then, tour the Tibetan Zhiyun Lamasery, one of the most important Tibetan monasteries outside Lhasa. The complex sits in the middle of an idyllic Yunnan countryside. In the evening, enjoy a traditional Naxi music performance by local musicians. (B,L,D) September 5 LIJIANG ZHONGDIAN (SHANGRI-LA) Following breakfast, drive to Leaping Tiger Gorge to see the Yangzi River as it drops ten thousand feet in an awe-inspiring thunderous descent. Then, stop at Haixi Village for lunch at the traditional courtyard Wanxue Restaurant. After lunch, continue on to Zhongdian, at an average altitude of 9,842 feet. Deserving the distinction of the real Shangri-la, ancient Zhongdian is half Tibetan and Han Chinese, with a small number of Naxi, Bai, Yi, and Lisu minorities. The countryside, though, belongs to the Tibetans. Experience the grandeur of Tibetan traditional architecture, as well as its flourishing cultural heritage that continues to thrive in this high elevation. Tonight is free and dinner is on one s own. Due to the higher elevation, it is suggested to rest and let your body adjust. (B,L) Accommodations at the Tibetan stlye Songtsam Retreat September 6 ZHONGDIAN (SHANGRI-LA) In the morning, visit the Songzanlin Monastery, the largest Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Yunnan, at the foot of Foping Mountain. Then, drive to the Pudacuo National Park in the Bita Lake Nature Reserve, a Yunnan World Heritage Site. This beautiful countryside is divided by three rivers, the Yangzi, Jinsha, and Nujiang. In the evening, visit local Tibetan families and enjoy a Tibetan dance and vocal performance. (B,L,D) September 7 ZHONGDIAN LHASA This morning, fly to Gongga Airport in Tibet. Upon arrival, meet our Tibetan guide and transfer to Lhasa. Lhasa is located at an altitude of approximately 12,000 feet, one of the highest cities in the world. After adjusting to the altitude, enjoy an optional walk around Barkhor Street, the marketplace of old Lhasa and still amazingly evocative of old Tibet. The Barkhor is a religious circumambulation, where hundreds of pilgrims on any one-day make their ritual observances. It is also a thriving market, and Tibetan stone-block architecture forms the
8 backdrop for the sale of prayer flags, prayer wheels, thangkas, and jewelry. Lunch and dinner at the hotel. (B,L,D) Accommodations at the new St. Regis Hotel September 8 LHASA A full day of sightseeing includes the Potala Palace, once the seat of government and the winter residence of the Dalai Lama. Today it remains the abiding symbol of Tibetan Buddhism. The complex is comprised of the White and Red Palaces in the center of Lhasa Valley. Rising over thirteen stories the Potala contains hundreds of altars, ceremonial rooms, and the like. Next, take a short drive to Norbulingka, the Dalai Lama s former summer residence. Constructed in the 18th century, it is a masterpiece of Tibetan design and contains several palaces and chapels. The Summer Palace exudes a charm that reveals the daily life of the dalai lamas, beyond the formality dictated by their ceremonial and governmental roles. Later, visit Jokhang Temple, Tibet s holiest shrine, filled with altars, halls and galleries. The finest Tibetan art treasures are found here, piously venerated by throngs of pilgrims. (B,L,D) September 9 LHASA Traveling outside Lhasa, visit Sera Monastery, one of the three great monasteries of the Gelugpa sect and founded in 1416 by a disciple of Tsongkhapa. The great hall holds thousands of Tibetan sutras in cubicles along the wall, a fitting evocation of the Tibetan love of learning. Here, hundreds of monks continue to practice the Buddhist dharma, including historic debating rituals. Then, drive to Drepung Monastery, the largest monastic complex in Tibet. Afterwards, stop by a local Tibetan village where old rural life continues. (B,L,D) September 10 LHASA SHANGHAI This morning, fly to Shanghai and transfer to the hotel, located in the heart of the city. Then tour Yuyuan Gardens, which is designed in six unique parts, making the garden seem much larger than it really is. One of the best Ming rockeries is here, and wending the zigzag bridge to Huxingting Teahouse is a delight. Also tour the famous French Concession in the heart of old Shanghai. This evening is free and dinner is on one s own. You may explore Xintiandi, a stylish dining and shopping district in the old French Concession. Designed by MIT architect Ben Wood, the district is filled with restaurants, clubs, cafés, and boutiques. (B,L) Accommodations at the Portman Ritz Carlton Hotel in downtown September 11 SHANGHAI In the morning, find yourself among the wonderful collections of the Shanghai Museum, including its world-class displays of Chinese bronzes, jade, pottery, ceramics, furniture, paintings, and calligraphy.
