EXPERIENCE IRELAND Chapter One With its wild, unspoilt landscapes, stunning vistas, fascinating history and friendly local people, the Emerald Isle is the perfect holiday destination
CASTLES AND THE CRAIC Lush green landscapes, fabulous food and a wealth of literary and musical talent Ireland truly has something for everyone to enjoy Ireland s landscape is dotted with vestiges of its past, from Iron Age forts to Christian monasteries. But most magnificent of all are its castles: from atmospheric, windswept ruins to beautifully restored fortresses, all have fascinating tales to tell. At the 15th-century Blarney Castle near Cork, for example, visitors bend over backwards (literally) to kiss the Blarney Stone in the hope of being blessed with magical eloquence. On the literary front, Ireland s prowess is legendary, having produced four Nobel prizewinners George Bernard Shaw, WB Yeats, Samuel Beckett and Seamus Heaney. Add to that Jonathan Swift, Oscar Wilde and James Joyce and you have a pretty peerless line-up. With a harp as its national emblem, it s no surprise that music is the nation s passion. Passing pubs in Ireland you may hear strains of lively folk music fiddles, flutes, bodhran drums and wonderful uilleann pipes, as well as guitars and melodious voices. In this land of reeling, jigging, ceilidhs and fleadhs, don t expect to keep your feet still for long. And when it comes to celebrating, you ll find everything from the biggest nationwide gatherings for St Patrick s Day with music, dancing and grand parades, to specific events devoted to oysters in Galway or the arts in Belfast. As for the landscape, you may never have seen grass as green as that of Ireland and with swathes of fertile pasture, farming has always been a mainstay of life, with cattle producing rich milk and butter. Lovers of fish and seafood will relish the bounty of this island s waters, especially its famous oysters and mussels. Feast on speciality cheeses, such as Gubbeen from West Cork, as well as smoked fish and charcuterie. And, of course, Ireland is famous worldwide for Guinness, which has been in production since 1759 when Arthur Guinness leased a disused brewery in Dublin. Known as the black stuff, it can be tasted on a tour of the Guinness Storehouse, or in any pub, bar or restaurant. Equally famous are the whiskeys, particularly Bushmills and Jameson, but do note, whiskey is written with an e here!
WELCOME ON BOARD Chapter Two Belmond Grand Hibernian is Ireland s first luxury touring train, taking travel in this beautiful country to new heights
TRAVEL IN STYLE Enter a world of elegant carriages, fine cuisine and attentive service, with an ever-changing backdrop of Ireland s landscapes Accommodating just 40 passengers in 20 cabins, each named after an Irish county, the train offers guests an intimate experience exploring ancient castles and spotting rare wildlife, with onboard entertainment and ample opportunities to make new friends. Designed with a strong Irish flavour, the train s interiors are fresh, light and contemporary mixing romance and heritage with a breath of Irish air. There are five carriages offering 16 twin and four double cabins, all of which can interconnect with a twin cabin. There is also a wheelchair-adapted cabin for guests with limited mobility. The two air-conditioned dining carriages Sligo, an elegant restaurant with a contemporary Georgian feel, and Wexford, a light-filled space enhanced with Irish motifs and tweed fabrics. From wonderful artisan cheeses and superb smoked fish to smooth Irish whiskeys, the onboard menus give guests an authentic taste of Ireland. Combining the warm atmosphere and elegance of a Dublin saloon, the Observation Car, Kildare, is the focal point for making new friends and listening to music, while gazing out of the large windows at the views. Naturally, it will also be the place to taste the country s finest whiskeys or a pint of Guinness. Some days will begin early with a visit to a local sight or an invigorating round of golf. However action-packed the itinerary, you can be sure of restful sleep as the train stops to stable each night.
CABIN PLANS Our en-suite cabins provide a cosy and sophisticated haven in which to relax and savour the glorious scenery Belmond Grand Hibernian has twin and double cabins, each equipped with an en-suite shower room, a wardrobe, desk and a picture window from which to admire the view. There is also a wheelchair-adapted cabin. The cabins are fresh, light and contemporary yet steeped in heritage. The interior design of the 10 carriages reflects Dublin s Georgian architecture, with inspiration taken from the flora and fauna of the Irish landscape. All interior furnishings are supplied by local businesses, including hand-crafted stone counters in the Observation Car from a Dublin-based company and wool-blended carpets. The designs all feature Belmond Grand Hibernian s Celtic knot woven throughout in colours matching the tartan of the counties after which the carriages are named including sleeper car Waterford and dining car Sligo.
