Introduction Dear Alumni and friends, Welcome to the 2018 reunion of IABA in Lisbon! We hope you can join us from June 29 to July 1 for what promises to be a very exciting 51 st reunion. That is not to say, however, that during our reunion we will be confined to Lisbon, as we will also have the chance to visit Sintra and Cascais, two fascinating, historic towns within close distance from each other and from Lisbon, the former being known for its many 19th century Romantic architectural monuments (palaces, castles, grand houses) which resulted in its classification as a UNESCO World Heritage Site while the latter is a former fishing village that found favor with Portugal s royal family in the late 19th century and eventually became home to other royal families of Europe including the Italian (House of Savoy), the Spanish (House of Bourbon), the Bulgarian and Hungarian royal families in the 20th century. It goes without saying that there are so many things to see in Lisbon, one of the oldest cities in Europe with an immensely rich history, as well as in Sintra and Cascais, that it was not easy to decide what to do, when and where. In the end the choice was made to concentrate in most of the historic parts of Lisbon, starting in Alfama where on Friday evening we will be going to one of the main restaurants with Fado music located in an 18th century former chapel and ending in Belém where our Gala Dinner will be held. We have reserved the last day of the reunion to Sintra, where we are planning to visit the National Pena Palace which stands on the top of a hill in the Sintra mountains, as well as to Cascais where we will be having lunch on the marina that is located just below the citadel of Cascais, a set of fortifications including a fortress built between the 15th and the 17th centuries before we head back to Lisbon later in the afternoon. A final word to our academic event which promises to be very interesting indeed thanks to our three Portuguese speakers who are eminent experts in constitutional, private and arbitration law and have extensive international experience. We hope to see you all in Lisbon on June 29! Alexandre Mendes LL.M. 14 3

The easiest way to get to your hotels from the airport is by taking a taxi which are still cheap by European standards (eg, an average trip between the airport and the center of the city should cost no more than 8-10 Euros). Alternatively, if you have time, there is also a Metro Station at the airport ( Aeroporto station) which is the cheapest option (a trip costs 1,45 EURO plus 0,50 EURO of the Viva Card), but depending on the hotel you choose to stay you might have to change lines in the Metro and expect in any event a 45-minute trip if your hotel is in the center of the city, like most of the recommended hotels are. 6
Friday, June 29 Academic Program This year's academic program on Friday afternoon will take place at the Law School of the University of Lisbon. We have three very exciting presentations lined up for you by eminent experts in their respective fields: Gonçalo de Almeida Ribeiro (S.J.D. Harvard, 2012), Judge of the Portuguese Constitutional Court on «A Genealogy of Judicial Review of Legislation in Portugal» Dário Moura Vicente, Professor at the Law School of the University of Lisbon, will introduce us to «The place of Portuguese law among the world's legal systems»; Filipe Vaz Pinto 07, Partner at MLGTS will speak about «Lisbon as a top seat for international arbitration». The seminar will be followed by a short reception at the Lisbon Law school. A special thank you for generously hosting us at the Law School of University of Lisbon goes to Prof. Dário Moura Vicente. Evening Program In the evening we will meet for drinks and typical Portuguese food in one of the main Houses of Fado in Lisbon, Mesa de Frades. Located in the heart of Alfama, the second oldest quarter in Europe with the atmosphere of a rural village inside the city, and in an 18th century former chapel where the walls are covered by authentic glazed tiles, this is a great place to start the evening, have dinner and attend a show performed by a professional Fado singer. The origin of Fado as a music genre can be traced back to the 19th century, having been added to the Unesco Intangible Cultural Heritage List in Please indicate your option of meat, fish or vegetarian on the registration form to be circulated soon. Saturday, June IABA Annual Meeting (members only) Please enjoy breakfast at your hotel. At 9:00 IABA members will meet at the Sana Lisboa Hotel for the annual IABA meeting. Historic tour of Lisbon Everyone will meet at 10:45 at the Sana Lisboa Hotel to board one of the three-wheel, six-seat tuk-tuks that will be available to explore most of the historic and central parts of Lisbon including the Castel, Alfama, Comercio Square, Chiado, Bairro Alto, São Pedro de Alcântara viewpoint, Royal Prince, and São Bento just to name a few with sightseeing stops along the way. While the tuk-tuk has never been a traditional means of transport in Lisbon, or in Portugal for that matter, it turns out to be a very practical vehicle for getting around the steep and narrow streets of this hilly city and in most historic parts of the city they are often the only viable option in terms of transport. At the end of the tour, we will be dropped at Mercado da Ribeira where we will be having lunch. Mercado da Ribeira opened as a food market in 1892 with its iron interior and a large oriental dome rapidly becoming the main food market of the city, having been taken over by Time Out magazine in 2014 hence its current name although it is still known locally by its original name. That said, the new owners made a great job at 7
renovating the market, by adding a food court with canteen-like communal tables while keeping the traditional food stalls selling fresh produce. The food court has over 20 stalls, some of which are from top local chefs, selling high quality food at yet affordable prices covering virtually every food category one can think of (see photo below). Given the nature of the market, lunch is on your own ( Late afternoon event - Museum Berardo Collection Later in the afternoon, we will all rejoin to visit one of the major collections of international modern and contemporary art of the 20th century. Integrated into the Centro Cultural de Belém building (see photo below) which is one of the many national monuments the Belém area has to offer, the museum was named after its collector, a very rich Portuguese man who made his fortune in Africa, and hosts a collection covering a period of about 100 years, from Pablo Picasso to Andy Warhol. This guided visit will last for an hour and a half ending at around 18:45, thus giving an hour or so before apéro / dinner to explore the area. Please see above the list of national monuments in Belém. Unfortunately, by the time we leave the museum those monuments will all be closed to the public as they close early even in the summer so if you wish to visit any of them we recommend you do it immediately after lunch. Please note that our official dinner will be held by the Tagus river in a restaurant with its own history that is located just across the road from the Centro Cultural de Belém building (there is an underground passage to the river side). 8
Official dinner This year our Saturday night dinner will be held at Espaço Espelho d Agua, a restaurant located in a public building built over the water in 1940 for the Portuguese World exposition that year, in front of Centro Cultural de Belém and between the Monumento of Discoveries and the Folk Art museum, and with a nice terrace facing the waterfront where we will be having an apéro before dinner (see entrance photo below). There is also a little treasure in the main room where we will be having dinner, a wall drawing made by Sol LeWitt, the American artist known for his wall drawings and linked to the movements of conceptual art and minimalism, which had been hidden for many years (???) and was only discovered recently when the new owners carried out renovation works on the building. Transportation and dress code. There will be a bus waiting for us at the end of the dinner. Given that there will be a visit to the museum in Belém between lunch and dinner and the possibility that some of you may decide to spend part of the afternoon in Belém, no formal attire is required. We will first have an apéro with local wines and then a three-course menu. A vegetarian option will also be available. We will circulate the registration form for you to mark your choice soon. Sunday, July 1 Optional Program: Sintra (Pena National Palace) and Cascais On Sunday we are proposing a visit to both the Pena Park and Palace on the upper part of Sintra, with its towers and bright colours rising at the top of one of Sintra mountains (see photo below), followed by lunch in Cascais. The visit to the Park will be guided and is scheduled to last for 90 minutes ending on the terrace of the Palace while we estimate the visit to the Palace to take at least 45 minutes more. Assuming we will be no more than 30, a bus will take us from the center of Lisbon right to the top of the mountain, otherwise we will have to take alternative means of transport once in Sintra. There will also be a bus waiting for us at the end of the visit which will take us from Sintra through the mountains and along the coast to Cascais where we are scheduled to have lunch in the local marina. After lunch you can spend some time in Cascais, a beautiful town worth visiting. We will have to leave Cascais toward Lisbon at around 16:00. We will do so through the Marginal road along the sea which is quite busy at that time of the year so do expect at least one hour on the road before you arrive to Lisbon. 9
The cost per person of this excursion will be EUR 75 for transportation, admission and guided visit to the Pena Park and Palace and lunch. Transportation Getting around Lisbon Lisbon has a good public transport system with buses and a metro with four lines, yellow, blue, green and red, and 55 stations (see Lisbon metro below). The Lisbon metro is modern, quick and good value covering most parts of the city and is the recommended means of transport within Lisbon. Unfortunately, the metro is not an option when we head to Belém on Saturday afternoon so participants will have to take a taxi or the bus number 28 to get there. In order to take the metro, each participant will have to buy a Viva Viagem card into which the metro fare will be loaded, which must be purchased with the first ticket and costs 0.50 EUR. The Viva Viagem card is reusable and can be used for multiple tickets: single (1.45 EUR), one day pass (6.30 EUR, including all Lisbon buses and trams), or ticket 10 journeys. Visas Visitors from certain countries outside of the EU may require visas. US, Canadian and Chilean visitors do not require a visa for stays up to 90 days. Please check the link below with the list of countries whose citizens are exempted from visa requirements and those that are not: 10
Itemid=94&lang=en Hotels June is a very busy month in Lisbon, so we recommend that you book as early as possible. The following is a group of three recommended hotels where we were able to get options for us. Please note that hotels are required to charge a local city tax of 1 per person and night, which will be added to the indicated prices. Sana Lisboa Hotel **** The Sana Lisboa Hotel is the venue for our annual meeting and has arguably the best location of the group of hotels that granted us options, being located right in the city center. It is a very recent, modern hotel with good views not only over a nice park across the street (Parque Eduardo VII) but also to the castle in the back of the hotel if you have a room on the 8 th floor or upper floors. It can easily be reached through the very central Marquês de Pombal metro station which is almost next to the hotel (one-minute walking distance only). Besides having our annual meeting at this hotel, the bus to Sintra on Sunday morning will depart from there. The drop off from the dinner on Saturday night will also be there as well. This hotel offers single and double rooms at competitive rates and is good value. We have secured an option for 25 single and double rooms for the nights of the 29 th and 30 th June, valid until the 30 th of April. Standard Single rooms for EUR per night, including breakfast and VAT + 1 EUR tax per person and night; Standard Double rooms for EUR per night, including breakfast and VAT + 1 EUR tax per person and night. Please book with the respective form! The Marriott **** Reservation link: Book your group rate for IABA Meeting in Lisbon We also have secured an option for 25 single and double rooms for the nights of the 29 th and 30 th June at the Marriott Lisbon Hotel, which is one of the two hotels of the Marriot group in Lisbon. It is located within 10-minute walking distance from the University of Lisbon where our academic event will be held on Friday afternoon, but its location is a bit far from the city center. If you choose to stay in this hotel, be prepared to walk at least 5 minutes to the nearest metro station or take a taxi to get around the city. 11
This hotel offers single and double rooms also at competitive rates. We have secured an option for 25 single and double rooms for the nights of the 29 th and 30 th June, valid until the 4 th of June. Standard Single rooms for EUR per night, including breakfast and VAT + 1 EUR tax per person and night; Standard Double rooms for EUR per night, including breakfast and VAT + 1 EUR tax per person and night. Iberostar Lisboa ***** This a brand-new hotel located very close to the city center. If you want to stay in a modern, *****s hotel close to the city center with competitive rates then you might want to consider this one. It is also located within walking distance from the hotel where our annual meeting will be held (5-10 minutes). We have secured a price option for 25 single and double rooms for the nights of the 29 th and 30 th June, with no time limit (subject however to availability at the time of reservation) Standard Single rooms for EUR per night, including breakfast and VAT+ 1 EUR tax per person and night; Standard Double rooms for EUR per night, including breakfast and VAT + 1 EUR tax per person and night. Please book with the respective form! Other hotels without IABA option You may want to check out the following hotels although we do not have options in these due to the expected size of the group. Sana Capitol *** If you want to stay in a small hotel, this one may well be an option worth exploring given its location just across the street from the larger Sana Lisboa Hotel, the venue of our annual meeting. Price range given over the phone on March 16 th was the same of our option at the Sana Lisboa Hotel (130/145 EUR for single and double rooms, respectively) despite Sana Capitol being a ***s hotel, but you might be able to book a room there for a slightly lower rate through the internet (eg, the website above). Fontecruz Lisboa ***** If you are looking for something luxurious, right in the heart of one of the most exclusive parts of Lisbon, the Avenida da Liberdade, then this Marriott franchise hotel could well be your choice. According to the website on March 16 th, price of a double room ranges between EUR. 12
Registration Fees and Payment Instructions Your registration will not be complete until after the registration fee of EUR 300 per person (plus the additional amount for the optional program, if applicable) has been received. The registration fee covers the academic program in Lisbon, dinner and Fado show on Friday night, the historic tour of Lisbon, the visit to the Berardo museum as well as the official dinner in Belém on Saturday night and transportation from there to the Sana Lisboa Hotel. Costs for the optional Sunday program in the total amount of EUR 75 will be in addition. All bank charges are to be borne by the participant, and all payments are to be made in EURO. Bank account Santander Totta IBAN: PT SWIFT-BIC: TOTAPTPL To the order of Alexandre Mendes Please mention "IABA event 2018" as ground for payment I will confirm your registration by once the registration form and the payment have been received. Other things to do in Lisbon or in Portugal If you are thinking of prolonging your stay in Lisbon or in other parts of Portugal, there are many things you can do or visit and I would be happy to give you some tips.
