3 Foreword Welcome Qatar has long-recognised that tourism is a crucial avenue for developing a sustainable non-hydrocarbon economy in Qatar and conveying Qatari culture to the world. With the launch of the Qatar National Tourism Sector Strategy in 2014, our efforts at Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA) to diversify the tourism offering and secure a place for Qatar on the map of destinations have gained even more momentum. Our strategy has set clear targets for 7 million tourists by 2030, and $10.7 billion in tourism spending. By then we are also aiming to increase tourism s contribution to the national GDP by 2.3%. We are confident that we are well on track, as international visits have increased by 91% since 2009, with an average annual growth rate of 13.8%, making Qatar one of the fastest growing destinations in the world. In 2015, Qatar was ranked as the second most competitive travel and tourism destination in the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region in the World Economic Forum s Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report. We scored highly on a supportive Business Environment (ranking 3rd globally), Safety and Security (2nd globally), Human Resources and Labour Market (14th globally), and Price Competitiveness (19th globally). Our strategy places a strong emphasis on business events, especially with the Middle East forecast to become the second largest MICE hub in the world. The sector is growing at 16% in the Arab world, twice as fast as Europe or East Asia. To that end, Qatar has invested heavily in infrastructural development that provides a major boost to the business events industry, such as the new state-of-the-art Doha Exhibition and Convention Centre, the large number of 3-, 4- and 5-star hotels coming on-line and the 300 km Doha Metro project, all of which will substantially enhance Qatar s ability to host world-class events. Welcome to the Qatar Business Events Guide, where you can find everything you need to know about Qatar s business events infrastructure, from venues to tourist attractions to transportation options. Through the information, images, maps and contacts in this guide, it will become clear to you why Qatar is set to become a globally competitive destination for business events. An estimated 70% of Qatar s visitors are business visitors, spurring the growth of the hospitality sector and attracting renowned hotel brands to the country, both exquisite luxury establishments and comfortable, affordable boutique hotels. The rapid development of the business events industry includes an evolving exhibition business, which has grown by 40% in 2015, bringing to visitors the latest and best in everything from fashion and real estate to education and medicine. It also includes an active conferences and meetings portfolio, which saw 22 ICCA meetings come to Qatar in 2014, raising the country s Asia Pacific and Middle East ranking in this area to 19th. All indicators point to continued growth over the next five years, and at QTA we are maximising efforts to consistently support and cater to this growth. From this launch pad, you can embark on a seamless event planning journey from anywhere in the world. Whatever your event needs, I trust you will find it here, and I look forward to welcoming you and your delegates to Qatar soon. Ahmed AlObaidli Director of Exhibitions, Qatar Tourism Authority An Invitation In creating this Business Events Guide, our team has pooled their extensive knowledge, expertise and experience of hosting successful conferences and exhibitions in Qatar. 6 Qatar is more than just a thriving business centre. In recent years our country has emerged as a one of the region s most rapidly developing leisure destinations as well. Trade has always been at the heart of Qatar s economic life. For generations before the discovery of oil and gas, dhows set sail with their cargoes of pearls and other indigenous products, returning with foodstuffs, spices and building materials, and Qatar became one of the most important trading centres in the Arabian Gulf, a meeting place where merchants and seafarers came to buy and sell. This trading tradition lives on today. In recent years, Qatar s economic strength and dynamism, combined with its world-class infrastructure, facilities and services, have secured the country s growing reputation as an international centre of excellence in the global business events sector. Providing an ideal forum for buyers and sellers of products, services and technology to meet, network, exchange ideas and conduct business, exhibitions and conferences in Qatar offer an ideal platform for exploring both the outstanding opportunities in the national market and the exciting potential of the broader Gulf region and beyond. Easily accessible from the main business centres of the Middle East, Europe, Asia, Africa and even the Americas and Australasia, Qatar s strategic location and excellent aviation links make it a natural meeting point and ideal venue for hosting international business events. Capitalising on this advantage, the government has invested in developing an unrivalled portfolio of state-of-the-art event facilities, notably Qatar National Convention Centre and the new Doha Exhibition and Convention Centre, purposebuilt to the highest international standards and capable of catering to the largest international conventions and exhibitions. At the same time, public and private sector initiatives have created an exciting range of unique Qatari venues perfect for hosting innovative incentives. Equally important, Qatar boasts a comprehensive range of support services, including highly experienced professional destination management companies and event organisers. But Qatar is more than just a thriving business centre. In recent years our country has emerged as a one of the region s most rapidly developing leisure destinations as well. Our hospitality industry ranks amongst the world s best in terms of service and amenities and our cultural attractions, shopping, dining and recreational and sporting facilities are first class. So, whether seeking luxury, adventure or relaxation, delegates at events in Doha are sure to experience a truly memorable and enjoyable stay. 13 Souq Waqif - Traditional Qatari Market The bustling alleys of Souq Waqif, Doha s central market, offer visitors an authentic taste of traditional street life, architecture and culture. This maze of small shops presents a dazzling array of Middle Eastern merchandise from spices and seasonal delicacies to perfumes, jewellery, clothing, handicrafts and souvenir bargains. Traditional music, art and cultural shows as well as an eclectic mix of restaurants and cafes add to the ambience of this special place. Souq Waqif, Doha 22 23

14 Arabic Coffee The serving of traditional Arabic coffee plays a special role in Qatar as a symbolic expression of welcome. Freshly ground and flavoured with cardamom, the coffee is served from a characteristically shaped pot (called dallah) in tiny cups with no handles, which should be taken with the right hand. The server will continue to replenish the cup until you signal you have had enough by shaking it gently from side to side. Incense Burning Bukhoor is a form of incense very popular in Qatar and throughout the region. Made from wood scented with fragrant oils, it is burned in a special incense burner called a mabkhara to produce a rich smoke to perfume the home and clothing. Visitors are often invited to waft the smoke around themselves as a form of hospitality. A Traditional Dallah Pot 24 25

15 Dhows & Seafaring Qatar has always looked outward to the sea. For generations, fishing, pearl diving and trading provided a livelihood for much of the population. Traditional wooden dhows, largely unchanged in design over the years, symbolize this noble seafaring tradition and still ply Qatar s waters today. Pearl Diving While no longer commercially viable following the advent of the artificial variety, pearl diving and trading was Qatar s principal source of wealth before the discovery of oil and gas. The waters around the peninsula produced pearls of the finest quality and the people of the coastal settlements became adept at the arduous work of harvesting the oyster shells from the seabed. 16 Falconry The ancient sport of falconry is enthusiastically pursued by many Qataris during the winter hunting season. Much time and care is devoted to training young peregrine and saker falcons so as to creating a close bond between the hunter and his valuable birds. The main prey is the houbara bustard as it migrates south for winter. Camel Racing A popular sport for generations, camel racing continues to thrive in Qatar. The purpose-built camel race track 20 km west of Doha, attracts large enthusiastic crowds during the winter racing season. Modern technology has increasingly encroached on this ancient sport through the advent of robot jockeys, made of titanium and controlled by radio. Traditional Falconry 28 29

17 The Arabian Horse & Horse Racing The world of horse racing owes its origins in large part to Arabian bloodstock. Today, Al Shaqab centre is devoted to the perpetuation and preservation of purebred Arabians, while Qatar s equestrian tradition also flourishes at race meetings held at Qatar Racing & Equestrian Club throughout the winter months. 91 Business Event and Meeting Venues Unique Venues Event planners face a constant challenge to find destinations that are new, unique and offer potential for creating an extra special experience for their delegates. Welcome receptions may include traditional music and dance performances, the serving of Arabic coffee and the presentation of unique gifts, while gala dinners might feature Middle Eastern dishes and attractions such as henna painting, falconers with their birds, calligraphers and other activities unfamiliar to many overseas visitors. Among the host of activities on offer, incentive programmes may feature a taste of Qatari heritage, for example by taking a sunset dinner cruise aboard a traditional wooden dhow or by venturing into the heart of the desert on safari. Besides fabulous views and an exhilarating ride over the dunes, the latter can be tailored to incorporate such experiences as sand boarding, camel riding, dune buggy driving, Bedouin-style barbeques and camping under the stars. One area where Qatar really scores is in the range innovative indoor and outdoor venue options available to transform any incentive, social function or special event into a unique and inspiring occasion.
