5 Around the Bend The Big Bend area is more than just mountains, rivers and sunsets. By visiting one of the great towns around the Big Bend, you will see firsthand some of the people and characters that define the culture of the Big Bend and find some of the greatest treasures in America Fort Davis Alpine Marfa Marathon Terlingua Ghost Town and Study Butte are wonderful towns just down the road from Lajitas. Visitors will find a trading company, art galleries, restaurants and bars. Terlingua was a mining town around the turn of the century and is home to International Chili Cookoff Championship held the first weekend in November since Marfa is home of the infamous Marfa Lights first seen in 1883, and is a hotbed of fine art in West Texas. Marfa is also where the movie Giant was filmed. Alpine is the hub of the Big Bend and a major economic center for the area. Alpine is home to galleries, shops and restaurants, the Big Bend Cowboys Baseball Team, The Museum of the Big Bend and Sul Ross State University. The city is host to annual events like Gallery Night, Cowboy Poetry Gathering and the yearly Trapping s Cowboy Art Show.
