3 Yale Faculty Leader roderick mcintosh 73 Roderick J. McIntosh 73, Professor of Anthropology and Curator-in-Charge of Anthropology at the Peabody Museum, is an archaeologist who has dedicated his career to studying the ancient Old World. Before returning to Yale in 2006, he taught at Rice University for more than twenty-five years. He boasts 38 years of fieldwork (excavations and surveys) in Frenchspeaking Africa, most recently working in the southern Sahara of Mali (around Timbuktu), Madagascar, and in the Middle Senegal Valley of northern Senegal. For five summers Professor McIntosh taught at the University of Pretoria, South Africa, where he was called in to direct the reconstitution of archaeology at that formerly Afrikaner university. McIntosh remains on the faculty as Honorary Professor and now has several Pretoria graduates in his Ph.D. program at Yale. He is spearheading a human response to environmental change project in the Limpopo River corridor that encompasses Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, South Africa, and Mozambique. Professor McIntosh has published extensively (including ten books), and is currently working on a book manuscripts about the origins of Africa s first empires. He has a number of Mediterranean projects, past and present. These include malaria epidemics in Late Antiquity, sea-level change (particularly in the eastern Mediterranean), and climate change and human response during Antiquity. A popular lecturer, Professor McIntosh has traveled on several alumni programs and looks forward to visiting the Mediterranean again, exploring the many facets of Greece with alumni and Yale friends. Running on Waves (B,L,D) santorini Wednesday, July 12 The much-photographed, half-moonshaped island s spectacular landscape was forged by ancient volcanic eruptions, and was the site of one of the largest volcanic eruptions on record in the midsecond millennium B.C. Widely believed to be the lost kingdom of Atlantis, it was colonized by the Minoans. Visit the Akrotiri archaeological site, a Minoan Bronze Age settlement that was preserved in volcanic ash until its discovery in the late 19th century. Get a glimpse of ancient Cycladic life at the Museum of Prehistoric Thira and continue to the dramatic cliffside village of Oia to take in postcardperfect views of whitewashed houses, blue domed churches, and the sweeping caldera. Running on Waves (B,L,D) milos Thursday, July 13 Milos is the most dramatic of the Cyclades with extraordinary rock formations, hot springs, and white villages perched on multicolored cliffs. See its iconic windmills and whitewashed buildings during a morning stroll of Plaka, the island s main town. 6 Running on Waves Launched in 2011, Running on Waves combines the look of a classic three-masted sailing vessel with contemporary design and stateof-the-art facilities and equipment. She is modern, high-speed, and environmentally friendly, with a High Ocean Class rating that allows her to sail anywhere around the globe. All thirteen sails are deployed hydraulically from the deck by a four-man crew in a ballet-like procedure. The vessel meets all current SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) requirements for navigational and safety equipment. She boasts stabilizers, a bow thruster, a hydraulic stern marina for easy access to the sea, and a sun deck with a Jacuzzi. Much of the deck area is shaded for protection from the sun. Meals are served buffet style in the dining room, which can accommodate all guests at one seating. In the spirit of private yachting, a full open bar is provided each day: spirits, wine, beer, soft drinks, bottled water, coffee, and tea are complimentary. Daily activities can involve one to three miles of walking, often on hilly and/or uneven terrain. Moving around on board the ship requires opening relatively heavy sea doors and climbing or descending relatively steep stairways (with sturdy hand rails). Participants should be fit and in active good health. Any physical or mental condition that may require special medical attention must be reported in writing when you make your reservation.
