Figure 18: Mosque at Kampung Melayu Sri Parit which is just next to this village In addition, there is a Buddhist Association which is also known as Hock Teck Chee Association ( 福德祠 ). Figure 19: Hock Teck Chee Association ( 福德祠 ) 15

There is no other local organization in Kampung Baru Sri Parit. However, there is a well-known association near the village which is the Cheok Association (Persatuan Cheok Negeri Sembilan; 石氏联宗会 ). Cheok Association consists of majority of Hokkien people. Cheok Association will provide scholarship or reward for the students in primary and secondary school. In addition, the association also planned to organize an event during the first and second day of the coming Chinese New Year in They will give some motivation programs to the kids in the age of 5-10 years old. This event will be held at the Community Library in Lukut ( 芦骨社区图书馆 ). In term of the social activities in this village, the villagers usually play badminton at the badminton court in the community hall and some will play basketball at the basketball court in front of the community hall. For other entertainment facilities, the villagers will travel to the nearest town in Lukut or even Seremban. Figure 20: Basketball Court in front of the community hall In the past, the village has organized badminton competition twice at the badminton court in the community hall. Besides that, they have also organized an 16

event which is known as Xiao Qin Jing Lao ( 孝亲敬老 ) during Chinese New Year. The purpose of this event is to show respect to the elders which are over 70 years old. The community will give Ang Pao (monetary gift) to the elders. Other than that, they also celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival together in the community hall. 17

PROBLEMS Environment In the past, there was a garbage dump site located in this village that accumulates all the garbage around Negeri Sembilan. This has caused serious environmental problem to the villagers, especially the horrible smell from the rubbish that makes the villagers feel irritating. Fortunately, this problem has been solved recently, whereby the site has been shifted in November Besides, some residents still practice open burning of rubbish in the village and causes unpleasant feeling of the others villagers. This situation has been reduced after the villagers reported to police and warned them on their behavior. Although the grass around the village will be cut periodically (twice in a month), we can still notice weeds around the community hall which should be concerned. Figure 21: Weeds growing outside the community hall 18

Facilities Although Kampung Baru Sri Parit is insufficient with primary infrastructures that are essential for the villagers, such as schools, police station, clinic, hypermarket etc, it is not a major problem since they can obtain these infrastructures in Lukut, which is within 5km distance. However, this has led to traffic congestion at the junction of Kampung Sri Parit and Lukut. Several complaints has been made to the respective departments to widen the road at this junction but no further action can be taken since the land around this junction is occupied by Lukut Police Station, Lukut Muslim Cemetery and Lukut Mosque. Figure 22: Junction between Lukut and Kampung Sri Parit that is located between Lukut Police Station, Lukut Muslim Cemetery and Lukut Mosque (Google Street View) Besides, roads in the village are in poor condition. Some of the roads serving to the houses are very narrow and not covered with tar. 19

Figure 23 & 23.1: Road without surface marking (left) and narrow road serving to the villager houses (right) Another common problem faced by the villagers is the insufficient of rubbish bin. Currently, there are three rubbish bins placed at different location in the village and the rubbish will be collected every day. The rubbish bin is sufficient for normal day s usage, however, problem arises during the festival season, where the rubbish bins are unable to hold the rubbish produced and hence villagers will throw them around the rubbish bin. Besides, some villagers will also dump their old furniture around the rubbish bin. 20

rubbish bin Figure 24: One of the rubbish bin in the village with rubbish scattering around the Figure 25: Reported news on Nanyang Siang Pau regarding the garbage issue in the village In addition, the village is lack of fire hydrant. Although there is no any fire break out in the past, fire hydrant is still an essential item to be equipped in the village because there are still some wooden houses that are flammable. 21

Security and Safety Generally, there are very few problems on security and safety aspect in this village. In the past, there are drug addicts taking drugs around the village, but this situation has been getting lesser nowadays. Besides, robbery and burglary cases are also very minor. Yet, stealing cases happened quite often, especially stealing gas tank and shoes. Health According to the headman of the village Mr Tan, the health of villagers does not constitute a major issue. Dengue cases are also very less in this village. Others During our visit around the village, we have noticed that the facilities in the village are not in good condition. These might affect the convenience of the villagers. Figure 26: The roof of community hall is broken 22

RECOMMENDATIONS After figuring out the problems faced by the village, countermeasures should be taken to mitigate or even overcome the problems. In the environmental aspect, all villagers must play their respective role in protecting the cleanliness of the village. Campaign can be organized to raise the awareness of the villagers on the side effects of open burning. Besides, the amount of rubbish bin should be increased so that the residents feel convenient to throw their rubbish instead of burning them. In addition, the villagers can organize "gotongroyong" activity in every weekend and work on different location for every week. This activity can be focused on the cleanliness and also maintaining the facilities around the village. For the poor road condition in the village, the villagers should seek help from the town councilor so that funds can be raised to overcome this problem. Besides, since no further modification can be made to the junction lead to Lukut town, we suggest that the village can seek help from traffic department to assign warden traffic to direct the traffic during peak hours. In addition, the authorities should also request for the placement of fire hydrant in the village to cope with emergencies. In order to improve the security and safety level in this village, besides seeking help from the police, the villagers can self-form a volunteer corps (RELA) team to patrol around the village during the night time. In short, the authorities should fight for better infrastructure and social amenities for the benefits of the villagers. 24

TOURISM VALUE The tourism attraction in Kampung Baru Sri Parit is limited. This is because the village is more oriented to residential area and it is a small village. The economic activities are limited to farming, planting and fish farming. The village also does not have any famous local food store. Thus, the tourism value is limited. However, there are some famous places nearby which increase the tourism value of the village. One of them is the Lukut Museum which is about 1.5 km away from Kampung Baru Sri Parit. This museum presents the history of the mining activities around the area. Figure 30: Lukut Museum In the aspect of local food, there is a popular shop in the small town of Lukut run by the Teng ( 邓 ) family. The famous food is the Dirty Noodles ( 拉揸面 ). 25

Figure 31: Dirty Noodles ( 拉揸面 ) Next is the Lucky King Bun ( 好运面包王 ) at the Lucky Seafood Restaurant ( 好运海鲜饭店 ). The Lucky King Bun is a unique dish consisting of curry chicken with potatoes and concentrated gravy wrapped inside a gigantic bun. It is a soft and buttery bun wraps around the flavorful curry inside. Figure 32: Lucky King Bun ( 好运面包王 ) Moving on, Restaurant Mei Jing ( 美景海鮮酒樓 ) which is also a famous seafood restaurant that attracts the toursit. The foods in this restaurant is delicious and the price is reasonable. 26

Figure 33: Restaurant Mei Jing ( 美景海鮮酒樓 ) Lastly, Ah Cui Bak Kut Teh ( 阿水肉骨茶 ) which is also a famous local food near the village. This restaurant offers two types of Bak Kut Teh, which are soup and dry Bak Kut Teh. Figure 34 & 34.1: Ah Cui Bak Kut Teh ( 阿水肉骨茶 ) 27

ENTREPRENEURSHIP OPPORTUNITIES Since the main source of income for Kampung Baru Sri Parit is from agriculture, this provides an opportunity for those investors to invest on the farms and extend the farms. Since the economic activities are more on farming and plantation, the farm can be developed into organic farm. Moreover, the villagers can start up some specific types of farm such as Dragon Fruit farm or animal farm such as Rabbit farm. For the fish farming, they can improve by extending the farm into Arowana Farm. This is because Arowana farm is rare and many people have no knowledge about Arowana breeding. In addition, the owner can also extend the farm for sport fishing activity as well. This could increase their income as this can attract people who love fishing. Besides that, there is only a workshop for Lorries in this village and there is no other car workshop. Thus, the mechanic can expand their business into car workshop as well. This is because the tools and the skills of repairing or servicing are almost the same among each other. By combining both of the workshops, it could increase the convenience of the villagers as they do not need to travel to other places for car servicing. In addition, there is only a grocery shop in this village. Therefore, the villager can take this opportunity to start their own business and open few more groceries shop. Since there are some durian orchards in this village, the villagers should take this as an entrepreneurship opportunity. Besides selling durian during the durian season, the villagers can make some homemade durian cake and durian toffee such as 28

Dodol. These can increase the income of the villagers and at the same time increase the tourism value as well. 29

COMMUNITY SERVICE PROGRAM If we were to organize community service program in Kampung Baru Sri Parit, the villagers hope that we can provide Chinese medicine health screening since we have students from Chinese Medicine Program. Besides, we can also provide free talk or workshop on health knowledge. These programs should be discussed further with the village headman so that proper date and venue can be decided. 30

CONCLUSION In a nutshell, this new village community project has provided us a better understanding about the background, social, culture and religion of Kampung Baru Sri Parit. We as younger generations are encouraged to expose ourselves to the lifestyle of new village through these community projects. Besides, we also concern with the problems faced by the village and try to propose some possible solutions. Lastly, we hope that Kampung Baru Sri Parit can be on par with the surrounding developing cities and yet, at the same time, maintaining the peaceful and harmony life of the villagers.
