Identify, with a rapid appraisal, the main strengths and weaknesses of the local economy and its main sectors (duration: 1-2 weeks) Identify options for practical activities to strengthen the competitiveness of firms -- Criteria: feasible with local resources quickly implementable (starting next week) quick, visible results (with 3 months) 1

Emerging urban area with local enterprises eager to improve business 4. Many natural resources and tourist sites 5. Availability of land and labour 6. Many economic potentials to be exploited Economic disadvantages of Kintampo 1. Poor sanitation 2. Underdeveloped infrastructure 3. Undeveloped tourism sites 4. Weak linkages between the public and private sector 5. Unreliable power source (electricity) 6. Lack of basic information about sectors and main businesses 7. Lack of supporting institutions 4

5 The Myths and Reality of Kintampo Myth 1: The tourism sector is well developed! Reality: Tourism sector is not developed. Many potential sites have not even been identified No history and information on tourist sites Most tourists leave the city after having visited the waterfalls The Myths and Reality of Kintampo Myth 2: Hotels and guesthouses are rendering adequate services! Reality: Limited accommodation for guests most of the hotels do not have restaurants Poor telecommunication facilities Poor customer relations and service delivery 5

22 Environmental health Proposal 1 Proposal: A task force was formed to identify temporary site for a lorry park Activities Remove all wooden and unauthorized structures on the main road prove viability of site for a parking place of trucks (e.g. Tamale station) Starting with the appraisal of a permanent site (maybe with private investors) Contacting Ghana Highway authority for feasibility study on proposed location 22

Placing containers and signboards at dumping site 2. plan for relocation of dumping site Responsible persons: Tourism committee, Town Council Result: in the short-term management of the waste at dumping site. In the medium term dumping site will be relocated 24

25 Additional information and recommendation There is a need for a location site for sectors like the garages and the furniture sector Additional information and recommendation Does there exist any plan to develop this in Kintampo? Is there a possibility to do something on this issue in the shortterm?
