The population of Kampung Cina is predominantly Chinese, followed by Malays and Indians. Most of the Chinese are FuQing people The main economic activities of Kampung Cina are based on the oil palm, rubber, and fishing industries. S.R.J.K. (C). 3 HISTORY/ GENERAL PROFILE Kampung Cina was established in 1905 with a land area of hectares. The nearest major town centers are Sitiawan and Sri Manjung which are about 5 kilometers away. Most of the land is flat and it is suitable for agriculture, especially for rubber and oil palms. In addition, since the village is by the sea, most of the villagers are fishermen. Most of the current villagers here are 2 nd or 3 rd generations of Fu Qing and Fu Zhou immigrants. The rest of the villagers comprise of Malays, Indians and other races. According to the census bureau, the current population in Kampung Cina is approximately 3,216. Most of the villagers there are Buddhist practitioners as the majority of the villagers there are Chinese. There is an old folks community association named Persatuan Warga Emas Kampung Cina that caters the welfare of the senior citizens. There are currently 2 major political bodies in Kampung Cina: MCA, and DAP. The local authority in this area is under Majlis Daerah Manjung. Currently, the village head of Kampung Cina is Wong Gie Yong. 2
4 EDUCATION Currently there is only one school in Kampung Cina, SJK (C) Uk Ing, which is a primary school. There are 245 students, 18 teachers and staffs currently. However, there is another primary school in kampong Cina which is SK Muhammad Saman with 365 students and 29 teachers and staffs. Besides that, there are 2 secondary schools, SMJK Nan Hwa, and SMK ACS Sitiawan, which are located in Setiawan town which is a few kilometers away from Kampung Cina. Kampung Cina s standard of education has improved significantly over the years due to its close proximity with major town centers, Sitiawan and Manjung. 6 ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES 10% of the residents there involve in the fishing industry whereas 80% involve in the agriculture (mainly rubber, palm oil) sector. Besides these two main economic activities, some residents involve in the manufacturing, construction, retail, hotel and restaurant sectors. Apart from that, some enterprising residents have set up their handmade noodle (Fu Qing Mee Suah) business. Besides that, people in the village are famous for seafood cooking. Thus, there are many seafood restaurants in the village. Since the village is located near the seaside, the price for seafood is very cheap when compared to other places. Seafood Restaurants There is no supermarket, mini market, banks and hair salon and therefore residents need to travel to Manjung town center for such services. 5

Furthermore, General Assembly President of Ping Xian Ci and Guan Ying Tang Datuk Guo Jin En said that they plan to expand Ping Xian Ci and Guan Ying Tang by building 71 statues with 15 meter high which nearby the sea. The 71 statues are: 大伯公 (15 meter high), 观音 (15 meter high), 妈祖 (15 meter high), 文与武公像 (10 meter high), 金童玉女 (8 meter high), 顺风耳 (8 meter high), 虎爷 (8 meter high),12 zodiac (4 meter high), 十八罗汉 (4 meter high), 八仙 (4 meter high), 四大金钢 (4 meter high), 姜太公 (4 meter high), and 唐僧 (4 meter high) and etc. The construction cost is estimated 700 million ringgit which will be donated by the villagers, and shall be completed on July In addition, Transport Minister Datuk Seri Jiang Zuo Han said that he believes the expansion of temples will add new tourist attractions to Sitiawan as well promote local food and tourism-related industry. 8

13 TOURISM VALUES Kampung Cina is famous for its Fu Qing Mee Suah and Kuang Ping (Biscuits), which are traditional delicacies introduced by its Fu Qing immigrants. Besides that, there are many seafood restaurants scattered all over the places in the village. Many people from the town drive to this village to eat delicious seafood meals. Delicous Seafood 12
14 FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS The local authority planned to use a 3 hectare rubber plantation to build an old folks home equipped with a recreational facilities, hostels, a grand hall and a community sports center. The reason for the conception of an old folks home is to create a social centre for the senior citizens. The nearby Uk Ing primary school could also be used to conduct their co-curricular activities. 15 PROBLEMS There are several socio-economic problems faced by the residents in Kampung Cina. Firstly, there is not enough land for farming. This is due to increased housing development in the surrounding areas. Due to this, there is a shortage of empty land for recreational activities. Secondly, the condition of the roads is not good. There are lots of potholes along the roads and there are no street-lighting. Therefore, the safety of the road users is in danger. Thirdly, the public transportation system should be improved. There is no bus service in Kampung. Cina and eventually causing inconvenience to the villagers. They have to walk to the Sitiawan for bus service. Fourthly, there is no clinic or hospital at all in Kampung. Cina. The villagers face problems during emergencies. For example, if a person faints, it takes 20 minutes for the ambulance to reach the house, and this delay may cause danger to one s life. Lastly, there are sea pollutions around the area. The local authority should take more effort to maintain or improve it although the pollution level is below average. 14
16 RECOMMENDATIONS Promoting the village Kampung Cina is just a small village by the sea and many Malaysians do not know the existences and attractions. However, we found Kampung Cina has many potential for tourism like its beautiful beaches, greenery sites and mangrove swamps which can be turned into eco-tourism locations. Thus, we recommend the local or national tourism board to promote Kampung Cina at the national and international levels. Once the village is turned into tourism hotspot, the local economy will improve significantly. Lack of substantial public facilities There is no police station in the village to ensure law and order. We recommend the local authorities to set up a police station. Next, there is no fire station or health clinic in the village and thus we recommend the local authorities to solve this problem.
