2 2 Launched in 1995, initiative under Malaysian s Rural Tourism Master Plan Aimed increasing participation of the rural community in the tourism industry. To reduce rural-urban migration. Homestay concept focused on the lifestyle and experiential tourism. The uniqueness of lifestyle, cultural activities and the rural economic activities are the main attractions.

5 PLANNING & IMPLEMENTATION AGENCIES RELATED TO CBT IN MALAYSIA Agency Responsibilities MOTOUR Provides directions, policies and guidelines for registration and development of CBT/homestay program Provide enhancement training Funds for infrastructure such as access road, multipurpose hall, public toilet, soft & hard landscape, signage and etc. Marketing and promotion through Tourism Malaysia MRRD Provides infrastructure for rural development. Training and capacity building for rural community MOA Financial and technical assistance to improve added value activities (tourism) for the agriculture sector 5

23 23 Encourages tree-planting in Homestays as part of its initiative to promote environmental awareness & conservation. Homestay visitors can purchase saplings at the nurseries & plant them during their stay. Encourage repeat visits among tourists to come back & witness the development of the tree that they had planted. Up December 2012: 14,023 saplings had been planted RM43, of revenue for saplings purchases.

44 44 The income generated by Homestay Programme benefits not only the homestay operators but also to the whole community when they engage in cultural activities, selling of souvenirs and participate in handling tourist packages.

45 CONCLUSION 45 Big potential in fulfilling niche segment market for both international and domestic tourists. Requires long term approach and aims to maximize the benefits to the local communities and limit the negative impacts of tourism on the community and environmental resources. Malaysia Homestay Experience provides the local community with alternative incomes and becomes a poverty reduction tool.
