2 Behind the Scenes at CERN & ITER September 18 27, 2016 Globe of Science, CERN (Andy Hay) Learn about the Large Hadron Collider (cover) and explore the Globe of Science (above) at CERN in Switzerland. RECENT SCIENTIFIC BREAKTHROUGHS surrounding the discovery of the so-called God particle, the futuristic Large Hadron Collider at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Switzerland, and other cutting-edge research centers in the south of France are changing the face of science. Begin in Geneva, Switzerland, famous for its quiet elegance and international flair. In addition to a full day discovering the intricacies of CERN, other scientific highlights also await, including a visit to the United Nations, private entrée into the laboratories of the University of Geneva s renowned Physics School of the Observatory, and a special look at Swiss watchmaking. Entering the verdant hills of southern France, stop at the enormous synchrotron in Grenoble, perhaps the world s finest center for the study of x-ray radiation and its many uses. Then, outside Aix-en-Provence, spend the morning as VIP guests at the sparkling new facilities of ITER, a large-scale scientific research center focused on the viability of fusion as an energy source. The tour s science focus is complemented by cultural experiences throughout our journey through these beautiful cities, including visits to contemporary wineries, art museums, and bountiful morning markets. 4 SCHEDULE BY DAY Sunday, September 18 Departures from the U.S. Depart the United States on independent overnight flights to Geneva, Switzerland. Monday, September 19 Arrival in Geneva Arrive in Geneva and board a group transfer from the Geneva International Airport (GVA) to Hotel Le Richemond. Later, gather for a two-hour guided walking tour and admire Saint Peter s Cathedral, constructed in Gothic, Romanesque, and Greco-Roman styles; the Hotel de Ville, seat of the city s government; the Arsenal, an arcaded structure dating from 1634; and the Reformation Wall, dedicated to the leaders of the Reformation. This evening, savor a festive welcome dinner of Swiss specialties in celebration of the exciting journey ahead. Le Richemond, Geneva (D) Tuesday, September 20 University of Geneva & Martin Bodmer Foundation Library After breakfast, meet with the Harvard study leader for a lecture at the hotel before a special visit to the University of Geneva s laboratories of the Physics School of the Observatory. Join your fellow travelers for lunch at a local restaurant. Continue to the Martin Bodmer Foundation Library and Museum for a guided tour of its historic collection of 160,000 works in 80 languages, including first and early editions of Dante s Divine Comedy, Newton s Principia Mathematica, and the Gutenberg Bible. The remainder of the afternoon and evening are independent. Le Richemond, Geneva (B, L) Wednesday, September 21 CERN Embark on a full-day visit to CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research and the world s largest particle physics laboratory. Here, scientists from all over the world come together to conduct high-energy physics research using CERN s accelerators, which push particles to almost the speed of light, and detectors, which make the particles Ceiling of the Chapel of the Maccabees, St. Pierre s Cathedral (Oleg Sidorenko) visible. Our tour offers behind-thescenes access with ample time to talk to laboratory scientists. After lunch with the group, spend the afternoon with a scientist visiting one of the seven particle detector experiments such as ATLAS or CMS. The remainder of the day is independent to explore Geneva. Le Richemond, Geneva (B, L) Thursday, September 22 United Nations & History of Watchmaking Take a behind-the-scenes guided tour of the United Nations building, the former home of the League of Nations and the second most important UN building after the New York headquarters. Enjoy a delectable gourmet lunch at the Vieux Bois restaurant of the Hotel School of Geneva. Continue with a visit of the Patek Philippe Museum s fascinating collection of Genovese, Swiss, and European watches and enamel miniatures dating from the 16th to 20th centuries to understand the historical significance of the art of watchmaking and enameling. The remainder of the afternoon and evening are at leisure. Le Richemond, Geneva (B, L) Friday, September 23 Grenoble s ESRF & Aix-en-Provence Depart from Geneva by private motor coach and drive two hours to the foot of the French Alps. Stop at the ESRF (European Synchrotron Radiation Facility) in Grenoble for a guided tour of the experimental hall and beam lines where the scientists of this center work. ESRF is the most powerful synchrotron radiation source in Europe, and several thousand researchers travel to it every year to conduct experiments. After lunch at the ESRF cafeteria, continue on a three-hour drive to Aix-en-Provence. Upon arrival, check in at the four-star Grand Hotel Roi René. This evening, enjoy a Provençal dinner at a local restaurant. Grand Hotel Roi René Aix-en-Provence (B, L, D) Saturday, September 24 Aix-en-Provence & Impressionism After breakfast, begin with a lecture by the Harvard study leader at the hotel. Then walk through the narrow, winding streets of Old Town and discover charming squares adorned by trickling fountains and more than 140 aristocratic mansions dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. Next, visit the Saint Savior Cathedral, famous for its sixth-century baptistery and triptych of the Burning Bush. The walking tour will finish in the bustling Place Richelme with free time to stroll through the lively local produce market before rejoining the group for lunch. This afternoon, meet a local impressionist painter who takes us to a landscape around the Sainte Victoire Mountain that inspired Cézanne, guides us in the discovery of Cézanne s life as an artist, and welcomes us to her country house for a private visit of her studio. The evening is independent. Grand Hotel Roi René Aix-en-Provence (B, L) Sunday, September 25 Aix-en-Provence Château la Coste After a morning lecture with the Harvard study leader at the hotel, the remainder of the morning and lunch are independent. 5 UN Geneva (Noir Kitsune) Chateau la Coste the nearby Château la Coste to enjoy wine, food, art, and architecture in the lush surroundings of the French countryside. Tour the Jean Nouveldesigned Chai, or wine storeroom, with an introduction to wine making and taste the wines produced on the property. Take a self-guided walk through the estate s grounds to view unique architectural installations by famous artists such as Alexander Calder, Frank Gehry, Louise Bourgeois, Richard Serra, and Andy Goldsworthy. Return to the hotel for an evening on your own. Grand Hotel Roi René Aix-en-Provence (B) Monday, September 26 ITER Embark on a morning visit to ITER, a large-scale scientific experiment intended to prove the viability of fusion as an energy source. Its construction began in 2010 using the financial and scientific resources of several partnering countries in Europe, Asia, and North America. The visit will include a presentation of the project followed by a guided tour of the ITER platform where the scientific facilities are under construction. Enjoy a light lunch with the group. Time permitting, visit the nearby CEA (Cadarache Center), one of the most important technological research and development centers for energy in Europe. After free time in Aix-en-Provence, gather for a farewell dinner at a nearby local restaurant. Grand Hotel Roi René Aix-en-Provence (B, L, D) Tuesday, September 27 Departure for the U.S. After breakfast, take a group transfer to the Marseille Provence Airport (MRS) for independent return flights to the United States. Learn about the culmination of decades of fusion research, design work, and complex negotiations, which have led to ITER s large-scale scientific experiment that aims to demonstrate the technological and scientific feasibility of fusion energy. Enjoy a relaxing day in the French countryside at Château la Coste, which includes a visit inside the state-of-the-art wine facility designed by architect Jean Nouvel, a tasting of the excellent wines produced on the property, and time to stroll through the estate to admire the works of art installed by famous artists and architects from all over the world. ACTIVITY LEVEL Moderate WHAT TO EXPECT Appropriate for people in good health with overall good mobility. Travelers should be comfortable participating in a full day of activity.
