2 In a privileged environment, Ain is the department of economic success Strategically located between Lyon and Genève in the heart of European communication networks, Ain enjoys an attractive and dynamic economy. Companies will find favorable environment for their development: research centers and businesses clusters, constant support for innovation, designated business areas, such as PIPA, the first European business park certified ISO 14001, the first high-speed Internet network in France, a skilled workforce driven by an active labour market and the growth of the population. Thanks to the high speed train, TGV, Bourg-en-Bresse is only 1h50 from Paris and 1h20 from Geneva. The Department also enjoys the immediate vicinity of Lyon and Geneva international airports and two local platforms of business aviation in Bourg-en-Bresse and Oyonnax. Fiber optic internet is being implemented in Ain, and is thus the first French department developing this technology. 4

6 ECONOMY FABRIC The variety and density of the economy, entrepreneurship, the growth in the number of establishments, the strong international business activity in Ain (3rd exporter of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes), and also innovation, are key drivers of this economic dynamism. With industrial and technological business parks such as Plastics Valley, Bassin of Bourg-en-Bresse, Parc Industriel Plaine de l Ain (ISO 14001), Bassin Belley and Gex, Val de Saone... businesses are well spread all across the territory, thus promoting harmonious economic development. Historically implemented in the department, industries have been able take advantage of the technological development to grow. Their high technicality, performance and innovations are world-recognized, they are thus often leading their sector of activity. 11 Main industrial branches The economic fabric relies on important ordering institutions and on a strong network of subcontractors. Ain is famous for its industrial specificities, such as plastics processing (gathering the highest number of European companies in this sector), food processing, metal work, truck body manufacturing, thermal and refrigeration industry, wood technologies, furniture manufacturing (including contemporary furniture) equipment-electric-electronic components manufacturing, composites and technical textiles manufacturing, medical and pharmaceutical industries... Companies of these sectors are assisted in their activities by numerous technological clusters and specialized training centers. 15 Main activities in the tertiary sector Services represent nearly half of the institutions and employ more than 45.1% of private sector employees. Along with this constantly growing sector of activity, logistics and transportations are getting well implemented and developed too. Ain has a major health center with adjacent traditional activities in this sector, with specialized units for rehabilitation and hydrotherapy.
