2 THE AUVERGNE-RHÔNE-ALPES REGION: EVERYTHING THAT NEEDS TO BE KNOWN With a population of some 8 million people, nearly as much as Austria or almost twice as many as Ireland. The region ranks 5 th in the European Union in terms of wealth creation (by comparing the GDP of NUTS2 regions (1) ). The industry generates more than 18% of the value added in the region, compared with less than 14% in the rest of France. The market services sector accounts for more than 45% of total employment. The value of exports exceeded 57 billion euros in The United States has become the 4 th largest supplier in the region. 6,187: this is the number of establishments with 50 or more employees, 103 more than the previous year. The employment rate in the region is 65.8%, 2.1% higher than the national level. The region recorded 178 million overnight stays in 2016, across all seasons. Totaling more than 9.5 million passengers in 2016, Lyon-Saint Exupéry airport is approaching the 10 million mark. More than 300,000 students are studying in the region. With more than 2,800 patents (whose inventor lives in the region), it accounts for 20.5% of patents filed in France by nationals. 11 Main industrial branches is a major industrial area in terms of what it contributes to the value added of French industries as well as its reception of establishments in this sector. Its areas of activity are diversified, with intermediate goods and equipment industries being highly represented, and is widely open to export. The region boasts many strengths in the high-tech industries such as machines, digital technology, electronic components, energy, pharmaceuticals and medical technology, bar turning, rubber/pneumatics, plastics and eco-technology. The Michelin group, with its headquarters at Clermont-Ferrand, is the largest regional employer.
