8 Tallinn and Hong Kong Short Haul Route: Tallinn General Overview Tallinn is the capital and largest city of Estonia. and has a population of 435,245 inhabitants. Geographically, the city is situated in the northern coast of Estonia, on the banks of the Gulf of Finland. Tallinn s medieval Old Town is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and known around the world for it s authentic Hanseatic architecture, its cobblestone streets and houses dating back as far as to 11th century. Just a 5 minute walk from the medieval Old Town is the thriving business centre of Tallinn: modern glass and steel skyscrapers, hightech hotels and conference centres, hundreds of restaurants and bars, banks and shopping areas. Here is everything you would expect from a modern European capital, within an easy reach and for a friendlier price. The Lennart Meri Tallinn Airport is the main airport in Estonia and belongs to the administrative field of Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications of the Republic of Estonia. Tallinn Airport is placed about 4 kilometres from the city centre and has seen considerable development over the past years, both in terms of traffic and its facilities. In 2014 the airport handled 2 million passengers and served various legacy airlines as well as low cost airlines. Potential routes In the case of Spain, almost 70,000 direct passengers 1 (departure+arrivals) travelled from Estonia to our country in 2014 (7.5% more than in 2013). Tallinn is currently connected with four Spanish cities Girona, Tenerife, Madrid and Barcelona. In 2014 there were almost 39,000 Estonian tourists 2 visiting our country. Nevertheless, in 2014 there were also 42,200 indirect passengers who travelled from Spain to Estonia. The main destinations to consider as possible new routes or increasing frecuencies, according to the indirect traffic figures for 2014, are: Barcelona: 16,900 indirect passengers 3 Malaga: 12,000 indirect passengers 3 Madrid: 8,600 indirect passengers 3 1 Source: Aena s statistics 2 Source: FRONTUR 3 MIDT indirect traffic (round trip) Tallinn s medieval old town Source: Estonian Embassy in Madrid

9 Tallinn and Hong Kong Long Haul Route: Hong Kong General overview There are not many places in the world that connect western lifestyle and Eastern spirituality. However, southern China is home of one of the privileged places: Special Administrative Region of Hong Kong. With approximately 1,108 sq km and 7 million people distributed between the Kowloon Peninsula and various islands, this small territory bathed by the South China Sea owes its historical peculiarities to its geographical location. A strategic port location, in the 19th century, became the object of desire of European trading powers. The 60 s and 70 s witnessed a spectacular economic development of Hong Kong, which would be considered as a so-called Asian Tigers (along with South Korea, Taiwan and Singapore). Likewise, its industrial boom was even an extraordinary urban growth. Given the scarcity of buildable space, Hong Kong was doomed to large population concentrations backed by massive construction of skyscrapers which today draw their skyline. Today the city holds the status as a financial capital and center of attraction for business and tourism. Potential routes Spain has no direct connection with Hong Kong. However in 2014, 105,000 indirect passengers travelled from Hong Kong to Spain. Madrid, with 38,400 indirect passengers and Barcelona with 48,200 indirect passengers in 2014 are the main destinations to consider a new route to Hong Kong. Additionally a direct route could capture the indirect traffic between Latin America and Hong Kong: AS Madrid-Barajas Airport is the gateway to Latin America in Europe with close to 24% of the market share and there is no need for transit visas for Latin American and Hong Kong passengers. Airport Charges frozen until 2025 The Spanish Goverment approved in 2014 the RD-Law 8/2014 which includes the freezing of airport charges levels until 2025 and the exemption of cargo charges. The document also defines the new regulatory framework for Spanish Airports for the next years. Incentive Scheme for 2015 The new route would benefit from the Incentive Scheme valid for 2015 with discounts in the passenger and security charges. 11 Public Holidays in Spain Did you know? The Descent of the river Sella is the most important popular celebration of Asturias, and is considered to be a celebration of International Tourist interest. Every year, on the first Saturday of August, canoeists from all over the world come to Asturias to take part in the Sella River race. It consists of a canoe race down the 20 kilometers of the river Sella between the towns of Arriondas and Ribadesella. This is the longest navigable distance of this beautiful river whose natural course has sixty kilometres surrounded by splendorous nature, that can be also enjoyed during the whole year. The story started in 1929 when Dionisio de La Huerta and a friend of him made an excursion in canoe by the river Piloña, a tributary of the river Sella. Their aim was only descending for pleasure and enjoyment. Nevertheless, this excursion began to take place yearly as a kind of competition among the friends in order to get the best records. Only interrupted by the Spanish Civil War between 1936 and 1943 each year this festivity is even more crowded beating all possible records of previous years. The festivity starts in the morning, when trains set out from Oviedo and Ribadesella packed with people to see the race. At 11 o clock, while the canoeists get ready on the river, colourful crowds of people in fancy dresess make their way to watch the race from the shore. At twelve o clock the race starts with a stampede of canoes towards the river and the excited shouts of the spectators. In Ribadesella, the finishing point of this race, people wait impatiently for the champions in each category and there is a huge picnic in Campos de Ova with food, cider, songs, dances But the party doesnt end here because this locality by the river Sella offers a lot of entertainment on fridays and saturdays nights in Ribadesella and also in Arriondas. The starting of the Sella s river descent There is also another speciality. This is to do this same race but at night. Under the words Row, Row! people encourage those night participants up to the dawn. If you have the chance, come to enjoy it. Source: Tourspain
