9 Luton and Asunción Long Haul Route: Asunción General overview Asunción is the capital of Paraguay and one of the oldest cities in South America. Founded in 1,537 by the Spanish explorer Juan de Salazar y Espinosa in the Colonial era, the city is historically connected to Spain and served as starting point of conquerors that seek gold and silver in Alto Peru. It is also known as The Mother of Cities because some colonial expeditions departed from Asunción to found Buenos Aires and other importan cities. Asunción is today a cozy city full of contrasts with old buildings and modern towers, neighborhood stores where you can buy handcraft products and amazing shopping centers, modest hotels and restaurants which include typical food and international cuisine. This combined with its romantic nights and entertainment makes of this city a real sense of pleasure. According to the National Statistics Institute of Spain in 2014 there were 74,910 Paraguayan people living in Spain, mainly in Madrid (24,978), Catalonia (13,014) and Andalusia (10,618). Potential routes. Spain has no direct connection with Asunción since 25 years ago, however in 2014, 73,319 indirect passengers travelled from Asunción to Spain. Madrid, with 46,665 indirect passengers and Barcelona with 15,148 indirect passengers in 2014 are the main destinatios to consider a new route to Asunción. Airport charges frozen until 2025 The Spanish Government approved last 5 th July the RD-Law 8/2014 which includes the freezing of airport charges levels until 2025 and exeption of cargo charge. The document also defines the new regulatory framework for Spanish Airports for the next years. Incentive Scheme for 2015 The new route would benefit from the incentive scheme valid for 2015 with discounts in the passenger and security charges. 11 Public Holidays in Spain Did you know? The festive stage par excellence in Seville is Spring and its calendar begins with the Semana Santa, the Holy Week, of universal fame. Already in the 16th cent the Passion of Christ was commemorated with processions carried out by different religious associations denominated Hermandades or Cofradias (brotherhoods or fraternities). Every day during the Holy Week, starting on Domingo de Ramos (Palm Sunday) there are processional parades at late night. Beside, on Viernes Santo (Sacred Friday) at dawn eight brotherhoods take part in the processions, among them the famous Macarena and the Gran Poder. The images go accompanied by Nazarenos, members of the different brotherhoods who march in procession, dressed with a different tunic for each fraternity covered with a pointed hood and a mask. Immediately behind the float the penitents that carry crossings go equally dressed but without any hood. An important element in the procession is the music that can sometimes be a simple accompaniment of bugles and drums of military inspiration. A special mention deserves the Saeta, a flamenco song interpreted without instrumental accompaniment. On the other hand, the Holy Week has a specific gastronomy composed by the cod plates and a series of candies among which the Torrijas are the favorites. La Macarena After a brief interval of time, the Feria de Abril takes place. Created as a commercial fair by the middle of the 19th cent, as time went by, the festive aspects that accompanied the agricultural and cattle activities in its origin were only the ones to last. During the Feria, people get dressed with the typical suits inspired by the traditional Andalusian rural attires. The ferial enclosure is composed of hundreds of canvas huts that settled in an ephemeral way for the days of celebration of this feast, being adorned the streets with farolillos (paper lights) of bright colours. In the early afternoon the Paseo de Caballos (horse drawn carriages ride) takes place, and from the Domingo de Resurrección (Easter Sunday) there are bullfights in the Maestranza bullring. The music during this Feria are mostly the popular Sevillanas. The Fair is inaugurated at midnight in the so-called Alumbrado ( Lighting Test ), concentrating the crowds around the Portada (Gateway) an ephemeral architecture adorned with thousands of bulbs; and it is closed at the same hour six days later with a show of fireworks.
