VELASCO Together with Antoni Gaudí and Lluís Domenech i Montaner, Josep Puig i Cadafalch forms the trio of the greatest representatives of Modernista architecture in Catalonia. This 2017 is the 150th anniversary of his birth and to celebrate the Puig i Cadafalch Year has been organised with a wide and varied programme of activities, including exhibitions, guided tours, seminars, etc., both in Barcelona and the rest of Catalonia. The event aims to disseminate and promote his work as an architect, town planner and archaeologist and his buildings and structures are simply must be seen because of their undeniable quality. Architect and town planner The multifaceted Puig i Cadafalch was the architect 2 1. Palau Baró de Quadras. 2 y 3. Casa Amatller. 4. Casa de les Punxes. 8 Buy your tickets at:

9 of many of the most recognised buildings of Modernisme, although some of his projects also show traces of Noucentisme or Neo-medievalism. He was also a prominent figure as a town planner, restorer, art historian specialising in the Romanesque and Gothic, and politician. Among his internationally acclaimed work as a town planner was the opening of Via Laietana to the coastline and the urbanisation of the hill of Montjuïc to house the buildings that were to host the 1929 International Exposition of Barcelona. As an architect, he left a rich legacy of buildings in Barcelona and the Maresme, his native land. Visits in Barcelona Barcelona s Gothic quarter and Eixample contain the largest number of buildings designed by Puig i Cadafalch. Some of his buildings that can be visited in these areas include Casa Amatller (Passeig de Gràcia, 41), Palau Baró de Quadras (Diagonal, 373), 3 4 now housing the Institut Ramon Llull, with guided tours on Wednesdays from 11am to 1pm in Catalan, Spanish and English, and Casa Terrades, popularly known as Casa de les Punxes, or House of Spikes (Diagonal, 420), a unique building whose medieval castle-like appearance makes it easily recognisable. It has recently been opened to the public and can be visited with an audio guide or guided MATARÓ ROUTE THE ARCHITECT S BIRTHPLACE Just half an hour from Barcelona (by car or train) lies the capital of the Maresme and birthplace of Puig i Cadafalch: Mataró, an important place to gain an insight into his work. Here, you will find his first Modernista creations: Casa Parera, Casa Coll i Regàs, whose spectacular façade includes a balcony in the form of a bay window, the shop of La Confianza and Casa Sisternes, his first building. As municipal architect, he was also in charge of renovating the municipal market of El Rengle, to which he added decorative ceramics and ironwork, and the assembly room of the Town Hall. He also designed the Casa de la Beneficiència. Check out all the latest news at: visitbarcelona.com 9

These include a tour of the so-called Block of Discord, the name given to a group of buildings in Barcelona s Eixample area in which the best architects at the beginning of the 20th century competed to design the most daring façades. These buildings include Casa Amatller, once home to the chocolate industrialist of the same name. Another of its guided tours includes the façades of Puig i Cadafalch s buildings in the Eixample, with stops at Casa Amatller, Casa Serra, Palau Baró de Quadras, Casa de les Punxes and Palau Macaya. A third option is to visit Casa Amatller as part of a dramatized tour that concludes with a tasty cup of hot chocolate. On Montjuïc, Puig i Cadafalch designed the Modernista textile factory known as Casaramona, now home to the CaixaForum cultural centre, which you can visit as part of a guided tour, and the so-called palaces of Alfonso XIII and Queen Victoria Eugenia, exhibi- 10 Buy your tickets at:

Many of his buildings can be found in the city where he was born, Mataró, as well as in other towns. In Argentona, just 5 km from Mataró, the Puig i Cadafalch family used to spend its summers and the house where they stayed still stands there today. 16 FOOD AND DRINK 1 Restaurants in historic buildings YOU CAN DINE IN EXCELLENT RESTAURANTS IN BARCELONA HOUSED IN UNIQUE HISTORIC ARCHITECTURAL BUILDINGS. LET US POINT YOU TO THE MOST IMPORTANT BELOW History and culture in Barcelona are closely linked to its gastronomy. So much so that several restaurants are housed in interesting architectural spaces: Modernista buildings designed by Gaudí, Puig i Cadafalch or Domènech i Montaner, stately homes, old masias (Catalan farmhouses)... Most outstanding Heading north always along the coast, our recommendations begin with historic spaces. In Ciutat Vella, you will find quality Catalan cuisine at the legendary 7 Portes 4 (Passeig d Isabel II, 14), a space that was opened in 1836 as a Parisianstyle luxury cafe. Not far away, but now in the Gothic quarter, Agüelo 013 (Avinyó, 37) is a cutting-edge restaurant housed in a building from 1850 that was once one of the city s most traditional taverns. And in the Born, Mercat Princesa (Flassaders, 21) is housed in a 14th-century bourgeois mansion with 17 gastronomic stands from which to choose a great variety of food and drink.. You also have a place to go if you prefer a Modernista style environment. El Gran Café 16 Buy your tickets at:

17 (Avinyó, 9) was opened in 1920 and still displays its original Modernista decoration, serving dishes based on traditional Catalan cuisine, as well as live piano music nightly. Housed in a magnificent building designed by Puig i Cadafalch, Els 4 Gats (Montsió, 3) dates back to 1897, when it served as a place for artistic and cultural gatherings. Some of its regulars included Picasso, Rusiñol, Ramon Casas, Albéniz, Granados, Rubén Darío... Today, it is a bohemian space with an excellent menu. Just off the Ramblas, Fonda España (Sant Pau, 9) is the dining area of Hotel España, offering a traditional menu under the direction of Martín Berasategui, with a nod to modern cuisine in a Modernista dining room designed by 3 1. El Quatre Gats. 2. Can Cortada. 3. Fonda España. 4. Casa Calvet. Domènech i Montaner. Moving into the Eixample, you will find Casa Calvet (Casp, 48), a building designed by Antoni Gaudí that once housed the offices of a textile company and has now been converted into a restaurant bearing the same name, where you can enjoy local, traditional, Mediterranean cuisine. And heading uptown, an early 20th-century Modernista mansion included in the Barcelona Modernisme Route houses Café 1907 (Cister, 25), a restaurant with a cosy terrace. Two masias round off our list and both serve excellent cuisine: Can Cortada (Av. de l Estatut de Catalunya, s/n), built over 900 years ago and listed as an artistic heritage building, and Can Travi Nou (Jorge Manrique, s/n), a rustic space surrounded by nature. visitbarcelona.com/restaurants 2 TRADITION THE CASTAÑADA The most anticipated autumn festival, All Saints Day, is celebrated on November 1, when the custom is to visit a cemetery and bring flowers for your ancestors. But in Catalonia, the Castañada is also celebrated, a time when chestnuts and sweet potatoes are eaten and sold in street stalls, as well as sweet panellets, made from a mixture of sugar, egg yolk and almonds, as well as various ingredients such as pine nuts, coconut, chocolate, candied fruits... You can buy them at pastry shops and bakeries like Forn Mistral, which opened in the year 1879 (Ronda Sant Antoni, 96). Check out all the latest news at: visitbarcelona.com 17

Popular traditions La Castañada is celebrated on the night of October 31 and November 1, the festival of All Saints Day, the Day of the Dead, bringing together friends and family around the table in lively celebrations that last well into the night. According to tradition, chestnuts (castañas) and panellets are eaten on All Saints Day. Seasonal chestnuts have been a part of these celebrations since the 18th century and today it is more common to buy roasted chestnuts and sweet potatoes in street stalls scattered throughout the city. Sharing the bill with roasted chestnuts are delicious panellets, made from a marzipan base to which is added pine nuts, coconut, chocolate, candied fruits, etc. They most likely originated as offerings that were made to the dead so that they would not lack food on their journey to the afterlife. Both items, washed down with sweet wine, abound during this most traditional of celebrations. La Castañada today shares the spotlight with the Anglo-Saxon tradition of Halloween, combining to make a mix of chestnuts, panellets and monstrous disguises. Until November 19, PortAventura World (only one hour from Barcelona) features special Halloween programming, including theme menus, monster parade and shows. And Barcelona s Aquarium is offering fun and entertaining family activities, including a Halloween game (until Nov. 5) and monstrous makeup (Nov. 1, 4 and 5).Two popular Barcelona neighbourhoods are also celebrating their traditional patron saint festival this month with entertaining cultural activities: the neighbourhood of La Sagrera from Nov. 16 to 26 and Sant Andreu from Nov. 30 to Dec. 10. Both will undoubtedly include such staples of traditional Catalan culture as giants, trabucaires (blunderbuss bandits), dances and devils, as well as a spectacular correfoc (fire run) organised by traditional colles de diables (groups of devils). visitbarcelona.com/agenda Check out all the latest news at: visitbarcelona.com 21
