2 photo: Fernando Alda photo: Fernando Alda Casa Castillo Calle de María Ortiz Seville Located in Barrio León, in a humble series of blocks of single-family semi-detached houses, the site was first completely cleared in order to make way for a residential project that is closely interwoven with modern-day concerns To solve the problem of privacy in low-rise semi-detached houses, the façade of Casa Castillo is a neutral, grey and secretive plane that can nonetheless surprise with its occasional openings The ground level develops gradually and smoothly Small variations in level articulate the different spaces without destroying the overall sense of unity Refusing from day one to adhere to the oppressive parameters of municipal building regulations, the architects exceeded minimums wherever possible in order to provide the house with its own external area - an extension of all the internal spaces which unexpectedly multiplies the size of the house Conceived with the extreme heat of the Andalusian summer, the flat roof is equipped with a small swimming pool photo: Fernando Alda Project is not public! 2005 Main designer, Ubaldo García Torrente Marisol García Torrente Private arquitextonica 2

3 Alamillo Bridge Ronda de Circunvalation SE-30 Seville This is a road (motor) ánd pedestrian bridge over the river Meandro de San Jerónimo, next to the Guadalquivir River in Sevilla Pedestrians walk across the spine of the bridge and the cars cross below Total length of the bridge is 250 m and maximum span is 200 m The pylon inclines 58 degrees The total length of the viaduct is 5265 m This type is a cable-stayed bridge Rather than use back stays, the weight of the concrete and steel pylon provides a counterbalance for the bridge deck, and the cables create a dialogue of balance between pylon and deck The bridge was built for the Expo '92, which was held on the large undeveloped island La Cartuja Four new bridges were built, of which Calatrava designed two The bridge form has been compared to a harp, ship's mast, and swan photo: Peter Varkevisser Photography 1992 Santiago Calatrava City of Sevilla Peter_Varkevisser_Photography 3

4 108 Social Housing Units Polígono Aeropuerto A Seville This project introduces an alternative to local regulations of land and town planning The 108 residential units are organized around a central void amidst three large-scale buildings Thus, the massing concentrates towards the borders giving way to a quality Maximum allowed heights offer a mixture of scales for a singular volume design The location of the dwellings has been chosen in order to comply with sustainability criteria that effectively ensure efficiency in the use of natural resources Lightning and ventilation facilities are available through alternating façades, also designed in an attempt to tone down the program Project is not public! 5 photo: Michele Alassio photo: Michele Alassio The House of Spiritual Retreat Autovia Ruta de la Plata E 803 Seville The house 'Casa de Retiro Espiritual' is a contemporary reformulation of the traditional Andalusian house, centered around a patio, onto which all rooms open To keep the house cool in the hot-dry climate of Southern, the living area is insulated by earth Two tall, rough stuccoed, white walls meet at a right angle, creating an envelope for the house and defining its entrance From this entrance, steps of increasingly greater length lead down to an open air patio which the house opens up onto An ambulatory defines the patio's other two sides, and serves as a transition between the house and the patio From the patio, two stairs leads us to the 'mirador' The house consists, simply, of a large continuous space, contained by sinuous walls, with different areas defined by smooth cavities excavated into the floor and echoed by the ceiling above photo: Michele Alassio Floor area/size m² Emilio Ambasz RODA SL RicardoMota_arq The house is built 25 miles (40 km) north of Seville, Situated on a promontory overlooking a lake, the house appears like a very strong hieratic, only after the road's last turn 5

6 photo: Norbert van Onna Parktheater Elzentlaan CN Eindhoven Netherlands Between 2005 and 2007 the theatre was completely renovated and extended with the new multifunctional Philips Hall For the renovation and building the firm en en I en was called in The design for the multifunctional Philips Hall was inspired by the Teatro Central in Sevilla This theatre was built on the occasion of the world exhibition in 1989 The former Stadsschouwburg Eindhoven was opened in 1964 s Cees Geenen and Leo Oskam had created a, for that time, unique building of rich resources and grandeur In the 1990's the theatre needed a thorough evaluation, which resulted in a list of serious defects: Noise pollution from the Globetheater to the Grote Zaal and vice versa, poor visibility and limited décor possibilities in the Globetheater, high temperatures in the building, asbestos and an outdated air control system In September 1995 the town council agreed on plans for the renovation and the construction of new buildings 2006 architecten en en Stadsschouwburg Eindhoven Norbert_van_Onna photo: Norbert van Onna 6

7 Finnish Pavilion Expo '92 Calle de Marie Curie Seville This pavilion was designed by MONARK, a group of 5 young architects who had studied together at the Helsinki University of Technology, and were all under the age of twenty-five at the stage of initial design The design of the pavilion was based on a place in central Finland where the rock is split into two parts, known as the "Shaft of Hell" The pavilion is split into two contrasting buildings, "Keel" and "Machine" The shaft is represented by the space between the two buildings, which measures fifteen meters high, thirty-five meters long and only two meters wide The first building is made of Finnish pine and its construction is similar to the traditional way of building wooden ships, hence its name, "Keel" The other building, "Machine", is made entirely of steel It is designed to be efficiently built and disassembled Although the buildings are uniquely individual, it is the dramatic contrast which creates a tension between organic and industrial form Project is not public! 1992 MONARK Finland stef_mimoa 7

8 photo: Stef Bogaerds Chilean Pavilion Expo '92 Calle Gregor Mendel Seville Chile participated in several World Expos during the 20th century, but it was Chile s participation in Seville in 1992 that most people will remember On that occasion, Chile transported an iceberg from Antarctica to the torrid 42 degrees Celsius that is typical of summer in Seville Prominently featured in the headlines of numerous newspapers and an ongoing topic of conversation throughout the Expo, Chile s pavilion became the must-see thanks to the iceberg and its beautiful architecture Chile s pavilion was one of the few to be acquired by the city of Seville and is still located today at the former Expo site Project is not public! 1992 Main designer, Germán del Sol José Cruz Ovalle stef_mimoa photo: Stef Bogaerds 8

9 Hungarian Pavilion Expo '92 Calle de Marie Curie Seville This pavilion lies along a northsouth axis Inside, two walls stretch across the building's diagonal Each wall is three metres apart from the other Seven towers stand on top of this double wall To the west of the double wall can be found all those areas that project what Western Hungary is like, while the eastern section naturally represents Eastern Hungary At the same time, the wall constantly talks Its voice is sometimes louder or softer, but it is always saying something The point of this - let us not forget the seven towers standing sentry above the wall - is for the visitors to feel that they are making their way through a living wall After all, this wall is nothing less than Hungary itself Project is not public! 10 Avenue of Europe Expo '92 Calle Isaac Newton Seville The European Union, and Nations of the European Union were all located along the Avenue of Europe, which featured twelve massive white-coloured towers, and a central multi-coloured tower featuring the flags of the (then) twelve nations of the European Union which underground hosted the European Union Pavilion itself The rest of the Pavilions of the Union were located at the left and right flank of the Avenue Its design explores reminiscent gardens at the Alhambra in Granada The towers are equipped with micronizers to evaporate water and absorb the heat of the Andalusian day Public access unknown! 1992 Nicolas Normier & Jean Marie Hennin stef_mimoa 10

11 Pavilion Mexico Expo '92 Calle de Tomas Alba Edison Seville The theme of the National Section of Mexico was 'Mexico: Plot and destiny', a concept that appeals of seeing Mexico as a living reality, a continuity in time and space, where the protagonist are the people, the society that extended from one generation to another In this process, the nation has acquired an original personality The total budget allocated by the Government of Mexico to participate in the Seville Expo was 53 million dollar, at the time 1992 Pedro Ramírez Vázquez stef_mimoa 11

17 School Angeles Martin Mateo C/ Venta la Liebre Alcalà de Guadaira The idea is to create a building following the Arabic-Andalusian tradition, leading the life of the edifice towards the interior, to liveable patios and portico galleries for circulation and staying Fundamental was the distribution of uses, positioning all classrooms near to the quiet green areas, and other uses towards the exterior The three lineal parts which conforms the building, originate a U that encircles the central patio thought as infant playground We tried to give an image of individualized architecture, reflecting its institutional character; the target was to offer a comfortable, happy and clean environment which contributes not only to facilitate teaching activities but at the same time to develop in students habits of cohabitation and good relation with scholar surroundings Project is not public! 18 46 Social houses Av de la Filosofía Mairena del Aljarafe The project was built in an area of residential expansion in the outer suburb of Seville, in the south of The small size of the plot and the high housing density that was required suggested a court-type solution The patio played a key role as an area for social interaction and made it possible to achieve the objective of giving the 46 apartments (2 or 3 bedrooms) two prospects - on the inner courtyard and on the street Each apartment is divided by a central access with service facilities The bedrooms have tall, narrow windows and are on the northern side while the sitting rooms and kitchens that give onto the souther side have large windows The terraces are designed as outdoor extensions of the sitting rooms and their projections shade the large windows during the summer months while allowing the sun to enter during the winter This means that all the apartments are exposed on both sides, with cross ventilation Project is not public! 20 Indoor Swimming Pool Av Vereda de San Agustín Mairena del Alcor The site, located in an area of extension of the municipality, is adjacent to the municipal park It is its main quality, its condition of background space of the park, which gives the possibility of establishing a relationship between this one and the swimming pool The sight of the park determines the location and orientation of the nave of pools - main space of the buildingwhich appropriates, to some extent, the existing vegetation, to give the user the feeling of being immersed in it In turn, the location of the lobby allows creating an input sequence to the facilities: the gentle ascent, parallel to the park, gives the user a first approximation or feeling of being in a place of rest and leisure The lobby extends towards the nave of pools on a glazed veranda with visibility over the bath area and the access to the stands zone The glazing separates the widely disparate conditions of humidity and temperature of both spaces Floor area/size m² ayerbe recco arquitectos Junta de Andalucía 0000fjrr 20
