Traditional Polish cuisine: Polish dishes not only taste great, but are also very energy-dense and warming, so they will be an ideal option for lunch/dinner in December. Silesian roulade with potato dumplings and red cabbage The roulade is a traditional Silesian dish usually served for a Sunday lunch. It s pork or beef meat, wrapped around bacon, onion and pickled cucumber. The roulade is then stewed in sauce, with which Silesian dumplings are later served (i.e. small balls made of potatoes and flour with a recess in the middle). The dish is traditionally accompanied by red cabbage. 2. Żurek Żurek is a traditional Silesian soup prepared on the basis of soured rye flour (akin to sourdough) in combination with a vegetable and bone stock, served with pieces of sausage, potatoes and other additions. Warming and nutritious. 3. Pierogi Pierogi are traditional Polish dumplings. They are made with thinly rolled dough, cut into pieces. The dough is then used as a wrapper for meat, cabbage with mushrooms or something sweet to make the unique shape of pierogi. The dumplings are then cooked in boiling water and served with various sides. 4. Gołąbki (cabbage rolls) Gołąbki are very popular in Poland. These are cooked cabbage leaves, stuffed with rice or groats and meat. They are served with tomato sauce. 5. Pork cutlet

5 This is a Polish variety of pork breaded cutlet one of the oldest traditional dishes. It s made of pounded pork tenderloin, seasoned and breaded, then fried. Cutlets are typically served with potatoes and salads. 6. Herring in oil with onions Poles prepare herrings in many ways. However, the most popular is herring in oil with onions. You can eat it on its own or with bread. It s a great match for more potent liquors. 7. Crepes Crepes are very thin pancakes served with sweet cottage cheese, jam or fruit. You can choose what you want: cream, sugar or chocolate as the topping. When going to Poland, remember two things. In Poland, tips are not added to the bill. You can decide whether to tip your servers. Clothing In December 2018, daytime temperatures can range from 0 to +5 degrees Celsius and fall below zero at night. Snowfall is also likely, accompanied by heavy clouds and cold winds. Polite children receive presents from Santa Claus on this day. It s a holiday not only for the children. If you like or love someone, you can give them a gift on behalf of Santa Claus 7. Tourist attractions CULTURE ZONE The venue of the Climate Summit is a unique location in the heart of Katowice. Just twenty years ago, coal was mined right there, in one of the oldest mines in Upper Silesia. Currently, in the revitalised area, there are three new buildings forming the so-called Culture Zone: The International Congress Centre, the new seat of the National Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra with a famous concert hall with world-class acoustic properties and the Silesian Museum a very special space combining restored historic post-mining buildings and a new, futuristic building... under the ground. 7 Katowice conservation area, which is one of the most atmospheric places on the map of the city. It was established in the years , according to the architectural design of Georg and Emil Zillmann. In the mining settlement here, the Neo-Baroque Church of St. Anna and the Wieczorek Coal Mine create a unique atmosphere, which allows you to move to the beginning of the 20th century. Another tourist attraction is the Wilson Shaft Gallery, which exhibits works of contemporary art. Since 2011 the Nikiszowiec settlement has been entered on the list of Scheduled Monuments. GISZOWIEC The picturesque settlement-garden was set up in the years and was mainly inhabited by workers of the "Giesche" Coal Mine. The architecture of workers ' cottages, built on the model of the old Upper Silesian country cottage is of particular interest. Another spectacular landmark of the district is the Siesian Inn (currently turned into the Szopienice- Giszowiec House of Culture), Gawlikówka Silesian Chamber (an art gallery with an exhibition of Edward Gawlik s paintings), as well as forestry buildings, schools and shops. Its location in the middle of the forest retreat enhances the uniqueness of Giszowiec. ROUTE OF MODERNISM The tourist route, which includes sites that represent the Katowice architecture of the 1920s. and 1930s. It consists of 16 modernist buildings located on the trail with a total length of 5.5 km. The visitors may admire historic villas, residential houses and estates, such as the building of the Silesian Sejm, The Garrison Church of St. Casimir the Prince. The hike along the trail takes the walkers to the interwar period and explains why Katowice was considered to be the most American of the Polish regions. Other tips and recommendations: The Market Square in Katowice contains an organic pavilion Dobry Klimat (Good Climate) where you can participate in various addictional events such as lectures, concerts, workshops and meetings with interesting people. December is the time of Christmas markets. In particular, we recommend the following ones: from November 23 th to December 23 th at the Katowice Market Square from December 7 th to 9 th so called Jarmark na Nikiszu in the heart of charming, over one hundred-year-old mining housing estate. Ekoeksperymentarium located at the corner of Market Square and Młyńska Street unique educational exhibition in a historical tenement house, designed to show how to change habits with ease in order to make the entire family's life easier and friendlier for us and our

8 environment. Here you will find some tips related to small everyday channges which you can introduce to your place. At the gallery at Rondo Ziętka (in the meaddle of huge roundabout next to Spodek Arena) you can visit unique exhibition presenting well known silesian design fresh and new trend among young local artists and designers deeply inspired by local traditions, myths and heritage.
